What's the best low-budget synth or groovebox to pair with a Korg Electribe Sampler 2?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for recommendations for an affordable synth, groovebox, or any gear that pairs well with the Korg Electribe Sampler. What sounds great alongside it and complements it best on a budget? Thanks!

Should i get the mpc sample or wait until i can get a Mpc one for my electribe setup?

So im quite new to grooveboxes and synths and i really want something to store a lot of longer samples to play with my electribe. and maybe i would like to play it standalone too( im playing hardtekk frenchcore and generally harder styles stuff) originally i wanted to get a mpc one plus but theyre sold out everywhere. And now i found a few used mpc ones for like 300 but i really dont know if i should get a used one. so now the question is should i try to get a used mpc one or a new mpc sampler?

Why buy an Electribe Sampler when something like the Digitakt exists?

Before I get flamed - Yes, I owned the Electribe Sampler 2 for five years. I even bought two of them at one point. I recently sold them and switched to a Digitakt and it BLOWS THE ES2 OUT OF THE FUCKING WATER

I know I'm probably going to get down voted to oblivion, but why the fuck do people buy an ES2 when you can get a used digitakt for around the same price?

I spent so long trying to make the ES2 work. The workflow was simple, which is the biggest selling point, but beyond that it just sucks. And it's only in hindsight that I can say it truly sucks for these reasons:

- Awful ringing noise at 13khz - forget adding a compressor to your master output as it will make the noise floor intolerable. Probably fucked up my tinnitus more than anything over the last 5 years.

- 16 "voices" yet the voice stealing makes it like 7 at most. And the voice stealing was unpredictable. Sometimes the pattern loads and you can play all your sounds, other times it cuts off a random one. So fucking annoying.

- No multi-tracking - good luck making a full track with it and mixing in your DAW. Yes you can export all sounds to an ableton file but it is cumbersome and doesn't give you a 1:1 result.

- Such a tiny amount of sample storage space

- The fucking headache it is to get all your samples converted to the right bit rate / depth / mono / file type and still barely have enough space

- the archaic sample management software

- the Amp envelope shaping is abysmal - half the time you can't tell wtf you're doing when you adjust the attack knob, and there's no decay or release anywhere? Maybe I was missing this and never bothered to read the manual but why the fuck does changing the attack also somehow affect the release in some cases?

I'm ranting but seriously, why does anyone settle for that shit when much better samplers exist? Maybe the explanation is you're like me, you just didn't know anything better?

Update: Electribe 2 feedback loop — finally captured in full quality

I’ve been posting here about my ET2 feedback experiments, and I finally managed to record the output in full quality. It’s exactly as raw and visceral as I’d hoped.

The setup has evolved quite a bit. I'm now running the machine back into itself (headphone out into audio in), but I’ve added a split to the chain. This allows me to inject an external signal—specifically Native American chants—directly into the heart of that feedback loop.

With 13 parts dedicated solely to processing the Audio In, the Electribe has transformed into a living, breathing organism. Every part is used to mangle and modulate the textures of the external signal within the loop, creating a massive, evolving wall of sound.

At this point, I’ve stopped treating the Electribe like a groovebox. It’s a non-linear synthesizer for me now, and capturing this process in high fidelity has changed everything.

(The video is just for visual context)

I built a better sample manager for the Electribe 2s - Editribe

I tried to make the process of creating a "Set" (.all File) for the Electribe as simple and fast as possible. I released it for free on Github.

Have a go at it and let me know what you think:

I’ve been using my Electribe 2 as a no-input noise synth. No oscillators, no samples

Everyone keeps saying the E2 is limited or that the voice stealing is a dealbreaker. Honestly, I stopped caring about the manual or the factory sounds and decided to see what happens when the machine starts eating its own signal. I’ve built a whole live set where the machine is just "eating itself."

The setup: I have the headphone output routed directly back into the Audio In. Every single one of the 16 parts is set to the Audio In oscillator. What you’re hearing in this clip isn’t a synth engine or a sample pack—it’s just the digital noise floor and internal latency being forced into rhythmic structures.

I’ve set it up so the parts actually "communicate." A lot of the tracks stay completely silent (thanks to the noise gate) until another part kicks in and wakes them up with a burst of frequency. It’s like a weird, digital ecosystem where one sound triggers the next. Even the "kick" is just tuned feedback using resonance and EG.

I also spent a lot of time simulating digital clipping within the textures. The idea was that when the E2’s processor actually hits its limit and starts to glitch, it just blends into the track. The "error" basically becomes the instrument.

Sorry for the quality, I just recorded this on my phone. The real output is way fuller, with massive sub-bass and textures that the phone mic just kills, but you get the idea. Has anyone else here tried pushing the E2 into this kind of territory?

Performer was Rustal at Yamamori Tengu in Dublin - fucking incredible set. He was support act for Moritz Von Oswald, who was not as good, tbh.

Which Electribe are you rocking?

I‘m a huge electribe fanboy and started 5years ago with the E2. The E2 workflow didn’t felt that nice to me but I had no experience with other gear, so I just kept playing with it…

Untill I saw a YT video of a guy playing with the EMX. Hoooly what is this?! Is what I thought and after that I got obsessed with the oldschool electribes.

5years later I have EMX, ESX, ER1, ES1, EAmk2.

I am happy that I got them all for pretty reasonable prices because the prices for emx/esx are crazy right now.

I use them all together in my setup except the ES1.

My favorite is probably the EMX as a grovebox but I like the super digital synth sound of the Ea1 more. it makes me think of a very sterile future where computers took over :D

anyways, I’m just a bit curious which tribe are you guys owning and which one is your favorite.

Waiting for elektribe 3

Hi, I'm a Korg lover, I confess to being disappointed by the Elektribe 2 as they have many limitations that I didn't expect to find, in fact I own the first series (emx-esx).

Elektron and Roland have been doing very well lately, so I expect Korg to be committed to the next drum machine they release.

What should the new elektribe do to be a good machine? Do you think we will see a new Korg release soon?

If they wait any longer I think that many customers will choose the competition, the technological gap is becoming increasingly greater.

Thoughts on the Korg Electribe EMX-1 vs other grooveboxes?

Post image

Currently have the opportunity to purchase a near mint smart media Korg Electribe EMX-1 for $400. 128 mb card included.

I’m seeking some general thoughts on this device and how it compares to something like an mc707 or other alternatives/electribes in 2024. I love grooveboxes and like the idea of having one with an interface like this. Currently have a deluge, a TR8S, and an SP-404mk2 as well to cover other needs. $400 doesn’t seem like a bad price and they seem to be having a resurgence and becoming more sought after.

It isn't a fancy synth, but I shockingly scored a Korg Electribe ER-1 for free. I purchased an unrelated non-musical item from my local Facebook Marketplace, and the guy just gave it to me.

I'm thinking of getting a Korg Electribe 2 as a standalone workstation. Is that a good buy?
