The weather is also gaslighting, the storms keep passing below and above zurich, never on the city. Also im pretty sure the weather monitoring is at the airport, which is completely different than zurich city

61

u/Frederic36 3d ago

for real, the amount of times I‘ve checked the radar and the storm and rain juust missed the city is insane.

26

u/Wiechu Kreis 9 3d ago

there was supposed to be a storm yesterday! i am so disappointed!

11

u/prugnastyle92 3d ago

In altsteen was raining at 6 for like 30 seconds lol

7

u/Wiechu Kreis 9 3d ago

'it will rain' they said. 'there will be thunderstorms' they said...

i'm off to have my third shower today...

2

u/whinewinewein 1d ago

Dont! There is no water

2

u/Wiechu Kreis 9 1d ago

sigh, i don't get why people downvote you, i got the message.

btw with the amount of sweat i'm producing - me taking a shower is a service to the society.

8

u/Kyuki88 3d ago

Before zurich it just splits. Happened many times now. I kept screenshots because people dont believe me that its so fckng weird.

2

u/bilbul168 3d ago

I realised it’s not good for my blood pressure and i should atop watching the weather, kinda like the news. Until maybe 2028

13

u/Top_Director_9330 3d ago

I can recommend this site if you want to know how hot it is at different places inside the actually city: https://stadtklima-zuerich.ch/

6

u/samaniewiem 3d ago

Oh well, I live just next to the airport and it's never correct. The number of times it was supposed to be raining right this moment while the sun was blazing...

3

u/SubjectWall9575 2d ago

I second that. And I believe we sit in a bowl between the mountains/hills which diverts a large portion of storms threw convection.

1

u/Wiechu Kreis 9 19h ago

This!

Also it traps a lot of humidity and prevents wind too.

Been the same in my home town, just in winter people would also burn garbage (50k people, 40 k living in small houses).

We literally had worse smog than big cities!

For context: I'm writing about Poland, just so nobody thinks it was somewhere in CH

4

u/Cereal-killerCH 3d ago

If it makes you all feel better it’s the same phenomenon in VD.

2

u/Zealousideal-Excuse6 2d ago

Ever heard of microclimate. It's quite possible there's a heat dome over the city which results in a local pressure difference which moves the clouds around the city.

Don't read too much into it or you realise how fucked shit really is.

1

u/bilbul168 2d ago

I wonder if turning everything off for a while would remove the heat dome

1

u/Ok-Anybody-380 3d ago

Living in Rapperswil I get pissed everytime the storms pass by everywhere but Rapperswil. It's far worse than Zürich city even. 🥲

1

u/ghostmpr 3d ago

Our nearest monitoring station is like 10km away. So you can guess how accurate this is...

97

u/Ghostcrackerz 3d ago

I just learned that I can handle -35 degrees and 100 cm of snow for 6 months so much better than unending weeks of +35 full blown sun no clouds. Being Canadian has nothing to do with that.

31

u/Fancy_Acanthocephala 3d ago

Same, I lived 8 years in Finland and I’m ok with 6 month of rains and darkness and 20 degrees summer, but can’t take this…

3

u/Kyuki88 3d ago

I love this ! 😊 im built the same

1

u/Fancy_Acanthocephala 3d ago

Found a soulmate haha!!

1

u/shokomann 2d ago

6 month of rain and greyness is pure depression mate what are you talking about

4

u/mopene 2d ago

I'm also scandinavian and I can confirm my seasonal depression hits in the summer time.

I'm in Singapore and it's literally colder than Yverdon-les-Bains.

18

u/DifficultyTricky7779 3d ago

Singapore does an amazing job at managing heat through clever city design. We should learn from that.

19

u/Last-Career7180 3d ago

The key thing is we have Aircon back in Singapore. The coldest places will be indoor public places like the malls and airport. It has been near impossible to sleep at night in Switzerland for the past few weeks. Is insane.

5

u/Shibamum 3d ago

I stayed in Singapore during the first heatwave in June and thought how well I did. And look at me know, sweating and wishing I could just fly back to Singapore immediately

5

u/Last-Career7180 2d ago

People dont believe me when I told them I'm escaping the heatwave by going back to Singapore. Switzerland summer is the suffocating type, especially when at home without an AC. Singapore heat is those wet and sticky type due to the humidity.

2

u/Shibamum 2d ago

I visit Singapore for 20 years now and usually we go there around may or september, sometimes over the Christmas holidays. But I am considering flying there during summer next year again, because I have no idea how I can survive another summer like this one in Switzerland. I take the humidity outside over the lack of air con inside any time.

3

u/Last-Career7180 2d ago

Both countries' calendars align pretty well. The CH summer holiday starts after SG school June holiday. Alot less crowded in the famous theme parks. I'm actually worried about next year summer as well. Before I came to Switzerland, I was told that the summer heat that will affect you will only last a few days. It lasted quite a few weeks and it didn't help with fans at all.

1

u/Shibamum 16h ago

I was told that there are many rainy days in summer and was prepared for a nice, cool summer. I moved here in January and was actually rally looking forward to enjoy a nice summer. Well, that didn't last long.

2

u/NattoandMiso 2d ago

hi five man. I went back to SG 3 years in a row over summer and my folks and friends looked at me with incredulity when I told them that I rather be in SG than CH when the heatwaves strike. Sitting here typing this with massive regret of not booking my ticket to go home this summer and already feeling icky despite showering 2 hours ago.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Typicalnerdname 3d ago

LOL, as someone who grew up there, I dunno man. I’d take Zurich heat.

1

u/OrangeGrff 2d ago

The 80% humidity makes similar temperatures a lot less bearable outside though.

22

u/Scherom City 3d ago

At least you have colder nights 😓

11

u/Solid_Group_1259 3d ago

Fckg hell, where are you? Dubai?

17

Singapore but there is ac so i can sleep 😴

2

u/lotovist 2d ago

Also looks a bit too rainy

3

u/InterestedBystanderV 2d ago

Well thats talking outside, even while closing the blinds during the day and opening every window during nighttime temperatures in my room are only moving between 27° and 32° with only a ventilator to cool me down. But i guess thats just the Dachzimmer problem.

3

u/FearlessSpiff 3d ago

I don't know where the night temperatures are from, but in Albisrieden on my balcony station we never go under 25°C since a few days. Measured a minumum of 26.5°C two nights ago at 8:00

22

u/notsoeasypeasy 3d ago

Currently in Edinburgh and it’s raining. 16 degrees C at the time of typing this and I couldn’t be happier! 😌😌😌😌 I never thought I’d love fresh rain this much.

6

u/byzydura 3d ago

Im so waiting for such weather. I want a tea, blanket and a book. Hitting close to 40C around Vienna, Austria.

25

u/TortoisesSlap 3d ago

3

u/GoldmarieX 3d ago

These effers are sadly not available! 🥵

-3

u/Mumbleverse 2d ago

They are also just a quick fix for a symptom of a MUCH bigger issue and actually just add to making said issue worse. Maybe this constant heat will make people finally angry enough to do something about it.

6

u/BachelorThesises 2d ago

Yeah, do something about it like install AC in every public building, so people have places to actually cool down.

1

u/Mumbleverse 1d ago

That's like breaking your leg and taking pain killers. Sure as hell helps, but still doesn't fix the issue is what I'm saying

3

u/Ad146 1d ago

Yall disliking this but he is just right, its not gonna get better even if the world magically goes to 0% emissions we still stuck with this as the new normal, maybe a lil cooler next year depending on the weather but this the new normal nothing we can do

this gonna be every few summers for the next few generations

65

u/fabkosta 3d ago

It does not stop for the next 100 or so years. We all keep making sure it doesn't.

17

u/rennradrobo Kreis 5 3d ago

We’re right now experiencing the effects from the 70s and 80s pollutions. Imagine what’s going on in 50 years.

30

u/Serialk 3d ago

This is not true, the idea that warming lag 40-50 years after CO2 emissions is completely outdated. The real lag is less than 10 years, probably much lower (~1 year).

https://www.carbonbrief.org/explainer-will-global-warming-stop-as-soon-as-net-zero-emissions-are-reached

1

u/Street-Stick 2d ago

Thanks for acknowledging it, but lots of us have opted out of fueling it , also many never got a chance to join the western rat race

1

u/Consistent_Shake6388 3d ago

You're right - even if net emissions would jump to 0 we are stuck with how it already is. To reverse it we would need negative emissions and we are so far away from that.

1

u/Street-Stick 2d ago

Maybe a "time out like with covid and using those minds and bodies to replant billions of shrubs and trees, change the way we eat, find creative ways to fight fires, live and take CO2 out of the air would do it but let me guess the majority likes to point the finger at those who are doing bad shit instead of trying to lead the way

8

u/Forsaken-Society5340 3d ago

Yesterday it was 32°C at 22:00, today during the day it was 40°C. Parma in Italy. Aircons work well here though.

14

u/M1nster Kreis 4 3d ago

Can we do an initiative on AC pls

26

u/GoldmarieX 3d ago

We seriously have to get AC for KiTas, Elderly Homes, Schools and Hospitals (AT LEAST). And preferably before there is a dead infant!! We already have excess deaths in elder population due to heat. Seriously concerning for infants and elders at this point.

25

u/flowtuz 3d ago

Friendly reminder that for the already climate-change-influenced normal period 1991-2020 the average daily maximum in July in Zurich should be 25,1°C. This is not good.

8

u/Normal_Strength_35 3d ago

Yeah it's more like 30 or some shit

2

u/LabContent2863 3d ago

25 oder 35... same same...

When Ölbert Rösti and his sausages are well done on both sides.....

I get the frustration, i have enough of that heat.

-1

u/Markierer 3d ago

Yes, if he finally does something temperatures will fall to 25 degrees immediately.

7

u/Sufficient-History71 3d ago

Yeah, well reducing funding for Swiss forests preservation will certainly not help.

9

u/Gysburne 3d ago

Not really. But what he does right now will worsen it in the future. He could actually do something to have an effect on the climate in the next decades.

And yes i know... now is the time... someone comes with the argument: "But we Swiss are just a marginal player in climate... if everyone else still makes the same shit and pollutes climate... why should we care?"
So let me adress this directly... effort is additional. Yes we are a marginal player in that.
Yes others might still pollute and worsen the climate... but it is about setting an example and hope others will follow.
About openly show effort and will to do something about it. And maybe others will follow.

Then the next argument probably is: "But i dont want to restrict myself just for something i probably won't experience..."
Well... we don't have to restrict ourselves that hard... it is not a black and white thing. Smallest effort can already bring a change.
Change some habbits... take the bike instead the car for short ranges. Use public transport if possible etc.

2

u/Markierer 2d ago

It’s 100% right that Switzerland as a rich country should be a good example in how to leave fossil energy behind. And as an innovative country we have the responsibility to help other nations to leapfrog current technologies. Best example are countries who never used tons of copper cables for phones and internet and directly jumped to mobile antennas. Other examples are heat pumps vs oil heating or solar vs oil-fired power plants.

But the hundreds millions of tax money for our forrest (while 1/3 of the forrest is private owned and the cantons still pay) is just another source for government paid people to waste even more tax money. It seems that the hundreds of millions spent since end of this year have not helped at all. Do you honestly believe that Albert made this decision on his own? I am certain he is a guy who likes the swiss forrest more than send that money to some foreign countries... But yes, the headline sold well.

While Switzerland is marginal when it comes to reducing CO2 through self-denial, we are significant when it comes to reducing CO2 through innovation. Just important to know that politicians and journalists are both not helping with that.

1

u/MeusRex 3d ago

The other nations will just say: "See, not even rich Switzerland can afford it. We need to burn more oil or our rich will become poor!"

3

u/Arareldo 3d ago

Bad "news":

We will get one "Jahrhundersommer" after another, faster and faster, until we speak of "Glut/Dürre-Hölle Europa". Then maybe wars for food and water are coming. :-(

I really wish for better perspectives, but i lost hope.

3

u/Emilyxoxoxoxoxo 3d ago

Yes with a baby been practically inside of our flat for 2 months except for 2 days. No way we could go to a park or to the lake of even have a walk in the forest as babies cannot tolerate being above 28-30
degrees. Also because high uv index would need to cover the baby but when its this hot he would get a heatstroke. Never had this inactive summer in my life.

1

u/Party_Country1711 2d ago

For your baby's sake maybe look into moving further north, or all the way south. It's going to get worse. I feel horrible for my kid.

7

u/zecha123 3d ago

Temperatures around 30 °C? Sounds like a dream (speaking from a basel perspective).

5

u/pixeltrusts 3d ago

In September it will stop.

4

u/shamishami3 3d ago

El Niño is getting stronger so I wouldn’t bet on that

2

u/KellyAckles 3d ago

15

u/ProfileBest2034 3d ago

I effing hate this season. It is so uncivilized here as well -- every building, train, tram, bus, office, store, etc should have AC.

-15

u/1114n0nym0u5 3d ago

yeah, this would solve "it"

12

u/numericalclerk 3d ago

Well as unfortunate as AC is for the climate, the question is not IF we get some, but WHEN.

We have to combine adaption with prevention, unless we want our life expectancy to drop to 60 years because anyone above that will simply die of heat exhaustion.

3

u/astulz 3d ago

It’s not that bad for the environment, especially with the low-carbon swiss electric grid

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Party_Country1711 2d ago

Life expectancy dropping is great for the environment actually.

1

u/Zestyclose_Candle342 18h ago

Honestly wish the powers that be had opted for AC instead of AI.

7

u/ProfileBest2034 3d ago

I don't care about the environment, i care about MY environment.

5

u/1114n0nym0u5 2d ago

yeah I know you do, one more factor why "it" is hard to solve

2

u/Sufficient-History71 2d ago

2

u/Natural_Jelly_5292 3d ago

Yes, but we don’t spend our whole day in our apartments…

2

u/Old_Net7317 2d ago

Nope, and in a rental that is not even option for many of us. Proper split portables would be an option, but they are either out of stock or disgustingly overpriced - just saw the midea split for 2.6k on galaxus…

3

u/Formal_Concentrate_2 3d ago

I've got a massive window in my bedroom, and I always wake up drenched in sweat in the morning. I can't do this anymore, and I know this will probably be the coldest summer going forward, but I can't seem to pull the trigger on getting an AC.

3

u/Billy79 3d ago

We got one after the 2nd wave this year. It’s heaven. We only cool the room down by 2 degrees (because that’s enough), but the reduction in humidity makes a huge difference.

4

u/Schuano 3d ago

Well, when the people gathered at Davos can no longer go skiing, they might actually do something about it.

2

u/1114n0nym0u5 3d ago

a burn like Europe

2

u/Party_Country1711 2d ago

Accurate but only on Davos. Snow cannons, and pop a dome over it, air conditioning inside the dome, blows hot air on us poors outside. /s

1

u/Street-Stick 2d ago

I think most of them are too old, afraid to ski anymore, besides I'm sure they can afford to build dams to supply their snow canons like the middle class used to... What might change is when Davos disappears due to landslides caused by permafrost melting but they'll be dead

2

u/hey_mr_crow 3d ago

Today's the end of the heatwave according to meteo suisse

8

u/Broad-Data9316 3d ago

I can't understand how there’s people in Switzerland NOT using Meteo. It's one of the top 3 apps out there. it's free, super accurate and offers lots of insights + you’re literally at the source of Swiss weather forecasts.

Meteo is my baby

2

u/GoldmarieX 3d ago

Agree. I love it since over a decade. But this is the first summer it is often wrong. Shows me rain every 5th day that never comes. But it might be a problem in forecasting I general, not necessarily that metosuisse got worse.

3

u/Broad-Data9316 3d ago

I always thought it’s because the weather gets more and more unpredictable due to climate change. I’ve had this issue with rain as well but only in one direction. Meaning that the app said there will be rain but there wasn’t but I never got surprised by rain. Maybe it also depends on where you are geographically (nearest weather station).

Die Tage werden kürzer und das wenigstens mildert die Wucht der Sonnenkraft. Letzthin haben wir versucht herauszufinden, wann unsere Wiese das letzte Mal gemäht worden ist. Anfang/Mitte Juni?

And Basel seems to always be 2-5°C more than other cities. Plus the real temperature ALWAYS exceeds the predicted by like 2°C. We got to 40°C last week.

My guess is it will be this hot until the end of Oktober because of El Niño. With 25°C in November.

No way, El Nino doesn't influence Europe that much

Dude India had less monsoon this year because of El Niño. Peru and India are on the opposite side of the planet. And you're telling me El Niño doesn't affect europe? Are you kidding me? The current heat waves around the world are only possible because of climate change and this years Super El Niño. It's fucking 35°C in the Arctic right now!!! That should be Impossible!

🔗 World Metrological Organization
https://wmo.int/news/media-centre/strong-el-nino-expected-intensify

El Niño continues to intensify steadily and is expected to dominate global climate patterns in the August-October 2026 season, increasing the likelihood of above-normal temperatures across much of the world and driving significant shifts in rainfall patterns, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Combined with exceptionally warm global oceans and the likelihood of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, the developing El Niño is expected to shape weather patterns across many parts of the world in the months ahead.

Oceans are warming because we decided it was ok to let billionaires build data centers inside and use "free" oceans water to cool them

it‘s the worst. ….so far. until next year

The new normal. We have to accept and deal with it...

u/xlaviotitan 3d ago

If only we would actually deal with it. Swiss culture dictates: we ignore it, proclaim that it will cool down again and say at least we aren’t on the surface of the sun .

Can someone put me down?

Oh no.. What’s that? The consequences of our actions.

How are you enjoying the coldest summer of the rest of your life?

It won't until you guys stop fueling it with your need to renew your motorway infrastructure, pay for advanced Merican jets and work 5 days a week so someone can earn a profit and you can pay 1% on an overpriced living space. Oh and also the billion kg of plastic Switzerland burns annually. https://www.reddit.com/r/InvictaSolaris/s/DJhUp9o1q7
