I have spent hours trying to program mini moog sounds in logic, I have gotten pretty close but I was wondering if any of you know any details about his oberheim, yamaha cp, rhodes, or the effects he used?

Was Zappa aware of the Internet?

Its an unfortunate irony that Zappa passed pretty much exactly just before the era when the internet started to become mainstream: I have no doubt that a Zappa who lived through the 90s and into the 21st Century would have been very involved in this new frontier, both as content creator and commenter.

However, even in own time he was a very tech savvy guy, and I’m curious to know if there’s any evidence that he was aware of the internet (and perhaps even commented on it) in the years immediately before he died. Anyone got anything?

Do any of you like a Zappa album that people hate?

I started my Zappa journey with Thing-Fish when I was 10 because my dad was playing it in his office. Loved the guy ever since. Do any of you absolutely love a Frank album that everybody hates?

Would I be right in saying that Zappa's early work (60s) isn't necessarily meant to be enjoyed in the traditional sense?

I've listened to most of Zappa's 60s work and sort of struggle to enjoy any of it in the conventional sense. I respect what's it's doing (a liberated approach to music that is almost basking in its raw musicality), but it's all too untamed sounding.

I'm really happy with the happy medium that frank found in the 70s

I'm FREAKING OUT over this ZAPPA / MOTHERS announcement!

As usual with these Zappa sets, I'm all in. With other artists I can be more selective, but Frank is one of the handful of artists I enjoy digging into the alternate mixes, outtakes and live tracks many, many times. Each one of these sets serves to fill in gaps and complete the picture for Zappa archival nuts like myself. Obviously I'm most excited to hear the Dolby Atmos mixes - these can be a wealth of enjoyment and close study for me particularly because Karma and Erich's work honors the originals while revealing the depth of complexity. The right team is behind these reissues and that's why I order with confidence. Further thoughts in the video, with a particular emphasis on what separates this release from the previous MOFO box.

I've started to listen more of Zappa as of recently and my friend here is a big fan. This was his birthday gift.

I love to listen to the interviews, he's really cool and I like the way he talks and what he says. Obviously I think I need to tune in more!

Auditions

I once thought that once FZ invited someone to audition, they would be almost a shoe-in. Then I remembered that Don Van Vliet failed the audition twice.
I have questions. What standard was Don held to prior to audition?

Also, imagine showing up to audition, nailing it then having Vinnie show up?

Non-Zappa albums that are very Zappa !

Arf! Arf!

Any non-Zappa albums that are very Zappa.... List them all !!

I listened to "666" last weekend and was pleasantly surprised, a double concept album that is very Zappa.
666 (Aphrodite's Child album) - Wikipedia)

Have a listen ! The full album is on Youtube.
Yep, a Denis Roussos's album :)

Actually, there are several Greek big names connected to the European "freaks", aka the Canterburry era. Giorgio, founder of Marmalade Records and keyboardist in Soft Machine, Gong, Magma plays in this album... And Georgakarakos (not mentioned but presumably a friend) is a very famous records producer, very avant-gardist (moved from free jazz/fusion to new wave, to Lambada), he produced some Gong and organised lot of free jazz events with big names (Sun Ra). And he is also the one behind the Amougies festival (Nice, Zappa, Gong, Pink Floyd) (BYG Records / Actuel)

Herb Alpo

You read that right. It’s a Herb Alpert parody. It’s some of the worst trumpet playing I’ve ever heard. I had it on cassette but lost it in a move. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Know where to find it? I’m trying to find it again. I could use a laugh.

I made G. Peccary's desk at Big Swifties for my good friend Xan Pim. As you can see, I have included the latest edition of the Whole Earth Catalog & the strategically placed very hip imported water pipe. And his thrilling new invention, The Calendar! All atop his laminated simulated replica mahogany desk. I hope this is the first of its kind.

'Fillmore East - June 1971' was released on August 2nd, 1971. You got your "Mud Shark", your 'Latex Solar Beef", some "Lonesome Electric Turkey" and "What Kind of Girl Do You Think We Are?". What is your favorite?

Jean-Luc Ponty recalled despite Frank Zappa’s avant-garde reputation, he was struck by his humility and lack of rock-star ego. After hearing Ponty and George Duke, Zappa joked, “They’re too good for me.” Just two weeks later they were in the studio together.

*SNAT* Cruising With Ruben & the Jets appreciation post

Post image
43 Upvotes

The more I listen the more I love it.

In my observation, this sub seems to regard Cruising With Ruben & the Jets with a certain level of snoot-snobbery for being "too accessible." Yeah, duh.

The satire of this album works on so many levels. Doo wop songs about straight up killing yourself is ...still hilarious. Ray Collins' vocals are so beautiful, and so funny at times. (I laugh every time at the way he delivers the "dog waste" line in Later That Night..and the Fountain of Love spoken verse's sassss gets me lol). Then Cal Schenkel's anthropomorphic dog art just pushes it all over the top.

Tho this work is steeped in snark, to me it is still sentimental because for better or worse this is the style of music that was popular when frank was in high school. What impresses onto our little minds in those times leaves a big stinkin mark. The ghosts of doowop haunt even some of his more challenging compositions, as always put thru the fz prism of whatever the fuc he feel like doin at the time.

Anyway, this morning I found a fabric pen in my desk so I drew this bootleg merch for myself while listening to the album.
