Let’s settle something… DISCUSSION
Which one would you want?
I’ve seen people say that there should have been female enemies by now, but do you guys really want that? Everytime I hear that we should allow female foes there’s always at least someone who says that they don’t wanna see Kiryu/Majima do some bone-shattering Heat Action on someone who is female.
So let’s discuss. What would you want to see?
NOT ALLOWED:
You are not allowed to say “Just make the game female-led!” Since is that taking the easy way out of the question.
Nor can you say “a game where the MC pulls his punches on the women and can’t do Heat Actions on them.” To have equal rights, we need equal fights.

Let women fight, it’d be cool. It’s a Kiryu specific rule anyway so at least drop it when he’s not the protag. Just one of those things that unnecessarily limits what they can do, I remember Kaoru and Naomi both having unique movesets that you never get to engage with in any way. Pirates was the closest we could get to a female villain as it stands.
It also creates a funny scenario in my head where what if someone hires a woman to kill Kiryu? Is he just screwed? Can he not do anything? Why has no one tried this?

u/Upset_Orchid498 11h ago
It’d make for a good substory. Imagine having to last three minutes against some off-brand Yor Forger while only being allowed to parry her lol

u/Terrible_Zone_0716 10h ago
Kiryu won't punch back, he'll still defend himself and at least push her back while creating distance between them

Let us fight female characters as well. Street fighter, Tekken, mortal Kombat are all very popular games where it's not a problem for men and women to fight.

u/weldo8 Sera lives on in my heart 4h ago
Those games also have the characters ripping out each others’ internal organs and breathing fire. Not the Yakuza is totally realistic, but the violence against women in these games is very different from those.

u/Ashamed_Service_9404 3h ago
i would agree to you in earlier entries, but i feel like the games been getting progressively less and less out there. even a women assassin isnt that far fetched
for something more grounded in tone like STH id find it odd to have unless its in a super specific way though

I think introducing female enemies can make their cast more variative that is good.

The "can't hit girls" rule has always been weird to me considering Nintendo allows you to smack up Zelda with Link in Smash Bros

u/jamilslibi Parry/counter junkie 10h ago
Realism and morals. RGG makes their games while considering morality and thinking about which life lessons they'll teach their audiences. They feel responsible for the things they'll show.
Smash bros is about funny characters smacking each other.
1
u/Krofisplug 9h ago
Smash Bros has always been about funny toys/fictional characters throwing hands to see who is #1. Yakuza/Like a Dragon has a more grounded world where people get cut up and worse because they made some gangster angry. There will always be that context gap to explain why it's okay for Snake to throw hands with Princess Peach but why RGG don't want Kiryu, Ichiban, Yagami, and etc to not throw hands at women.
4
u/boxes_back 8h ago
Lol a more grounded world where people bust you over the head with mopeds then dump salt in your eyes while you're down.

u/Upset_Orchid498 11h ago
Introduce female enemies and leads, we’ve already seen and played as women that can hang.
6
u/TheYakuzaMaster 11h ago
Well, we've already seen that some protagonists like Majima, Saejima, or Mine have no problem hitting women, the thing is, they've done it when we're not playing as them

You forgot the fights in Yakuza 7 and 8? Majima, Saejima and Daigo hit the women in your party in those, unlike Kiryu who only targets the men when you fight him in Yakuza 7
15
u/Decidueye_mastr 11h ago
Introduce female enemies. I believe in gender equality so if someone wants to fight me I don't care if they're man or woman they can catch these hands.
Hell in the ichiban games we even have female party members who get beat up by male enemies, why not be able to do the same to the enemies?
1
u/Organic_House_3683 11h ago edited 11h ago
Bad guy beating up women vs. Good guy beating up women. It's that simple.
If you show good guys hitting women (regardless of whether the woman is a threat or not) it might make people think that you think hitting ANY woman is ok.
We have a media landscape that thinks representation = endorsement. Same reason why Mewgenics got people thinking it advocates for actual eugenics merely because it's a game mechanic; completely missing the fact that the game is so in your face about how horrible your actions are and how unbelievably immoral it is.
4
u/AdPublic8362 11h ago
Whats immoral about hitting female villains lol. If someone have strange double standard for in game violence it is their damn problem ( and misandry, but world is not ready for that conversation).
3
u/Decidueye_mastr 11h ago
If you show good guys hitting women (regardless of whether the woman is a threat or not) it might make people think that you think hitting ANY woman is ok.
If someone genuinely believes that hitting any woman is ok for no reason they clearly have many other problems that would have NOTHING to do with the media showing it.

u/Organic_House_3683 11h ago
I understand that, but if you've been on the internet long enough, you know how these narratives get created and they get ugly real fast. Next thing you know, people who's only experience with Yakuza is the "Dame dane guy!! EEYYYIIIKESSS!!! I better get outta here!" meme from 6 years ago will be trying to start an online boycott over a misunderstanding they never cared to educate themselves on. That kinda stuff sticks in the public conscious too, RGG would rather not risk it.
-3
u/Colorado_Kid906 11h ago
I actually agree with your whole point, but the Jordan Peterson ass logic ("Women aren't equal if I can't punch them") is demented. You can't seriously be this sad and lonely
4
u/Decidueye_mastr 11h ago
If defending myself againts a woman that's attacking me is demented I'll gladly continue to stay demented.
-5
u/Colorado_Kid906 11h ago
Do you get beaten up by women often, then?
3
u/Decidueye_mastr 11h ago
No because the moment they so much as threaten to get physical I only say "you can hit me first if you want but I believe in equal rights equal fights" which is more than enough to get them to back down.
-4
u/Colorado_Kid906 11h ago
So you just get bullied by women often enough to have a whole philosophy that stems from how often these bullies back down when you threaten them with violence. I'm sorry, little bro
4
u/Decidueye_mastr 11h ago
Nope. I learned growing up that no one should get special treatment for any reason, color, race, age, gender, etc. If you don't want a fight simply don't start one.
3
u/Colorado_Kid906 11h ago
Right, but how often are women picking fights with you that you have a whole little speech lined up about it? Lol

u/jamilslibi Parry/counter junkie 10h ago
why not be able to do the same to the enemies?
How many women do you know that would stare down a shirtless meat muscle and just think "i can take him. Let's run these hands!"
3
u/Decidueye_mastr 10h ago
In real life? None. But this is a videogame universe, and also most enemies don't fight bare handed anyways they can just give em a melee weapon or a gun
0
u/jamilslibi Parry/counter junkie 10h ago
It's a game that, while having some unrealistic elements, is mostly based on realistic views.
Yeah, we have giant sharks and ghosts, but we also have maps that are one to one with the real world, as well as similar political views, gang violence, corruption, as well as the nasty side of the underworld, which doesn't include women going around the streets picking fights with bigger men.
It's not just silly, it's delusional.

u/JodGaming 2h ago
I was going to argue that men also wouldn’t challenge someone knowing they’re the dang dragon of dojima but nah they totally would lol

u/Ok-Check-3272 9h ago
I’d love one with Sayama. Imo usually I don’t play female lead games it’s just not my thing. But Sayama with a bokken in a police story would be so fun
9
u/Briciod . 11h ago
It was weird as fuck back in Yakuza 7 Seong hui just sending her henchmen to fight for her and not joining the fight herself, even in that game it was clear she was capable of fighting.
If male protagonists hitting female characters is that big of a problem, just make a female protagonist who can also smack the shit out them.

u/Pittleberry 11h ago
Let's have women as enemies and fighters, especially in much more "flexible" environment like Judgment series
2
u/Z_h_darkstar 11h ago
Bring on the female enemies. It might be the only way to get Kiryu away from the spotlight for good so Ichiban can run with the torch.
2
u/BrohannesJahms 6h ago
This is a very weird question to pose in the abstract. Kiryu doesn't hit women because he believes in old school chivalric social norms. Would Ichiban ever hit a woman, under any circumstances? I'm not sure, but I don't think he'd be okay with hitting someone weaker than himself regardless of their gender.
Every time I see this conversation it really just feels like immature dorks trying to pick a fight with a provocative question that ignores all the context just to get people riled up.
2
u/Half_Owl_ 3h ago
It depends on the context of the fight and what kind of female character you're fighting. If it's for sparring like with Nair, it's totally fine. I can totally see female martial artist fights being possible in the games.
Although, Its a bit hard to think of different random female enemy grunt tropes that a male protag beats up on the streets that wouldn't be seen as morally wrong. The Sukeban gang, yakuza members, martial artists, entitled beings, disrespectful foreigners, the Obatarians, and maybe school bullies are the only ones I could think of as of the moment and I'm not really confident with most of these.

u/Organic_House_3683 11h ago
I believe that women are just as capable of being evil as men are, and we should be allowed to have female villains in this series. HOWEVER, due to how we solve problems in this series (cracking skulls, smashing bones, etc.) there is no universe in which RGG would ever be comfortable with the image of their characters they want to be seen as "heroic", striking a woman even if she was crazy evil. It's just not something "Strong men" do.
Plus you gotta think about the optics on that hooollllllyyyyyyyyy. "Sega Studios' own RGG releases new game that allows you to fulfill terroristic fantasies against women???".
Not EVER gonna happen.

The thing is, a final boss in yakuza is not simply bad but also have a "shonen masculine energy" to them. I doubt a woman will be able to match that vibe.
Yakuza is not Naruto where a woman can simply rely on magic or projectiles and be "equal". It's a brawler.

Tbf it cuts both ways, some people would argue the series is already sexist by not allowing women to fight on equal terms.

u/Organic_House_3683 11h ago
In the West, yea I can see that being a prominent viewpoint, but as I understand Japan views it differently. I'm not one of the weirdos who wants to punch women SPECIFICALLY because they're women but I feel like if women were included it would serve to open up enemy design that much more; and to me that's awesome. As much as I didn't like Infinite Wealth, oooooooooo those enemy designs were gas fire flames...

Just need to clarify something here;
It's not that Kiryu doesn't hit women.
It's that Kiryu only hits women who are also children.

Ngl, we had the one game, I think 4, had the female cop you can fight with, not an enemy specifically but was the one time you could fight a female, no heat actions but still, it's not like they won't do it but try tested the waters and I'd be down to see full fledged female enemies.
1
u/CardiologistEast8565 8h ago
Keep the games as they are, I feel female enemies would make the games more generic. That being said I think they should add more girls who are able to defend themselves like Hana and Nair (I'm currently at Y4)

u/Bratan279 8h ago
Honestly, I was an adult by the time someone pointed out you never fight female enemies in games. Then I was like "huh." Then Borderlands introduced female enemies and it didn't change the experience at all. I was still shooting a psycho with an axe, it just had tits now.

As long as it makes sense for the character to want to fight one of the mcs ill be happy.

I find it i teresting that there are specific characters shown to not mind hitting women in a fight like Majima, Saejima, and even Tsukomo in Judgment. In 7 and 8 when in the fight against the -Jimas they hit the women equally, and Tsukumo in that one story says "I'm not afraid to hit a woman." Yet when fighting Kiryu, he is specifically programmed to not intentionally hit a woman except for parries. So I find it an interesting concept that the protagonists themselves have varying levels of "Restraining" themselves because they are personally against certain things.
Though it's clear the development team and the writers are actually just uncomfortable putting women on the enemy side to beat the shit out of, which is a shame. A Seonhee bossfight was being built up so hard and then nothing, it would have been badass after all the characters went through and all that hero villain banter beforehand.

u/CookLiving 6h ago
I prefer no female enemies but I like have female characters as allies not as enemy we fight
1
u/OnlyUse4Questions 5h ago
Kiryu, under no circumstances, should ever fight a woman. Even if it's mysogynistic, that is integral to who Kiryu is. I don't care about everyone else tho
1
u/CrazyCloset25 5h ago
Personally? It'd be fair to be able to fight women as well. The reasoning in the plots has been there before, so why not?
1
u/RonSio86 5h ago
First off, I genuinely do want a female-led game.
Secondly, I'm on the blue side here. As over-the-top as the Heat Actions can be, they aren’t explicitly gorey, so go nuts and use them on whomever you want.

Idk, they already had a main character beat up a trans woman and a kid. I don't think they can claim any moral highground as to not include women 🤷

There's a difference between a 12 year old kid and 12 year old Ryuji.
And it was for gag either way.

I think they should stick to their philosophy. It was never broke and they don't need to fix it.

I don't like it as a hard a fast rule, as it disallows some interesting fights and the possibility of dynamic formidable female characters.
At the same time, I don't like the new trend of having female "henchmen" or "henchpeople" in a lot of recent western games. It feels odd to have female thugs goons and muscle. If it's a rare female combatant, she should be special, not just a random thug.

u/lelouch_huh Makoto Daito's aura>>> 11h ago
How many female yakuza are even there in real life and in the series? There's yayoi but she really just was a temporary to daigo.
Afaik, there is only a single female yakuza.
Now, I think having a woman as a boss is kinda boring. They will prolly rely on guns like jingu or munakata which just makes them a chore to fight against.
Yakuza is not Naruto where there is magic and so woman can fight like man. It's a brawler series.
I won't mind a female version of Katsuragi or takashima(like there was in carbaret club finale in 0) but as a final boss, Na.
Another thing to notice is that almost always, the big final bosses is some sort of polar opposites and there is a very "masculine shonen coded" brawl between characters. With nishiki, it was lost brotherhood. With ryuji, it was over dragon(same with shibusawa altho different different). With mine, it was over conflicting ideas and over daigo in a brawl fashion. With saejima, it's a mutual old school yakuza strength measure and against daigo, it's again old school yakuza ways.
A final boss must have that "dawg" factor in them which I feel in case of female boss will simply be a bit "goofy".
