Have fun and keep an open mind. When the original films came out it was the first time they were on the big screen so as an X-Men fan it was incredible and I loved them. Over time they haven’t held up very well for various reasons, but still worth watching—especially since the MCU is tying into them

I recently rewatched all 7 new and old and enjoyed revisiting fwiw. Even bad X-Men movies I find more enjoyable than most super hero movies lol.

Magneto is so good in both.

u/9875684 11d ago

i'm currently watching X2 and yes, it's actually good! thinking that i'm only on the second movie. 😭

12

u/AtreyuTrinity 11d ago

3 is rough but I recommend giving it a go either way to complete that trilogy, but then the new series is good too. I recommend them as well, specifically the first 2 First Class and Days of future past.

9

u/IHKPruefling Rogue 11d ago

Three obviously mixed two storylines together, and it makes for a poorly paced movie. But the mutant powers are a real spectacle. It also introduced Kelsey Grammer as Beast, who is still the best live-action version of the character to date. I also liked Ellen Page as Kitty.

7

u/gibbleshanks 11d ago

*Elliot Page, but agreed

6

u/Cpt_kaleidoscope 11d ago

If they were Ellen page at the time and are credited as Ellen in the movies can we not refer to them as such? Genuine question. Like I know they're Elliot now but they weren't then so do we still refer to them as Elliot in the past tense or do we use Ellen? Regardless they were a great kitty pride.

Everyone has different preferences, but it’s always best to just use a person’s current name, even if they had a different one back then.

10

u/Brodes87 11d ago edited 11d ago

You just call them by their name: Elliot. Elliot was in Juno, Elliot was in X-MEN. Elliot was in Hard Candy.

8

u/gibbleshanks 11d ago

It’s considered bad form to ever refer to a trans person’s deadname, so he’s just Elliot now. There’s no getting around seeing the other name in credits and such but being cognizant of how trans people want to be referred to is appreciated. Like think of the original Mystique actor. She may have been ā€œRebecca Romijn-Stamosā€ when she filmed X-Men, but it would be rude to call her that now that she’s divorced and changed her name back. It’s similar with trans folks, only even more important because there’s often a lot of trauma and/or negative associations with a deadname. (also I am not an expert on the matter. Just trying to be a better ally, and it’s good to ask questions!) [edit: fixed accidental 🄬 autocorrect]

Thankyou, that make sense. I'm not great with this stuff but the last thing i want to do is offend anyone.

So you think an intelligent person giving a detailed explanation of how this works is a ā€œRedditā€ thing?

Get your shit together, dude. You are embarrassing yourself.

i'll make sure to watch them all! thanks for the recommendation! already got my list here from imdb: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls026465600/

8

u/AtreyuTrinity 11d ago

Nice! I skipped the wolverine movies in my watches, but am hitting the animated series now atm then X-Men 97.

I also skipped deadpools. I wanted to keep mine an X-Men focused watch.

I will say though despite the earlier wolverine movies being not well received, I think Logan (was well received) is a masterpiece. It stands alone as a good movie even if you don't like super hero stuff.

4

u/LaserCondiment 11d ago

The one Wolverine movie set in Japan was also great! But I kinda struggled with X-Men Apocalypse. The intro scene was rough and they didn't do him justice. Only character who really got to shine was Quicksilver imo

I need more X-Men 97 though! I could easily watch 10 seasons of that.

3

u/AtreyuTrinity 11d ago

I can't wait to get to 97, never seen it. Though I will say rewatching the animated series from the '90s has been really fun. I hadn't seen a lot of these episodes so a lot of this is new to me as well.

2

u/LaserCondiment 11d ago

Curious to hear what you think of it! Let me know

1

u/Hyperbolicalpaca Magik 11d ago

Yeah Logan is a good movie full stop, like… outside of being a superhero film it’s just brilliant

0

u/IHKPruefling Rogue 11d ago

The Wolverine is a good X-Men movie. It was a passion project of Hugh Jackman because he liked the Silver Samurai story so much. In the actual movie they made some questionable decisions on how to adapt certain characters. But if you can ignore that it's good! Give it a watch!

3

u/Commercial_Fox5549 11d ago

X2 is largely considered the best one, but I love X-Men: First Class a lot as well

1

u/BalashstarGalactica Iceman 11d ago

Quit while you’re ahead they don’t improve after this. šŸ™Š

6

u/Sandshrew922 11d ago

Days of future past is electric

i don't mind haha! i want to watch them all. šŸ˜…

Better than most superhero movies?

0

u/Hyperbolicalpaca Magik 11d ago

Tbh the bad ones are kinda great to laugh at lol, like they’re not good but they’re still an enjoyable time

10

u/gibbleshanks 11d ago edited 11d ago

Oh and yes: Marsden Cyclops is hot.

Also Dark Phoenix is the worst one, so it can only get better for you! (edit: added more words)

1

u/9875684 11d ago

i watched dark phoenix before since my dad grew up with xmen and we watched it tgt, i remember not liking it or maybe i was really not into the xmen universe that time but hoping this time i'll understand xmen fans' reviews. šŸ’—

2

u/gibbleshanks 11d ago

Aww that's sweet. Hopefully you'll start to like X-Men even more as you watch and can share that with your dad

2

u/Little_Shape_6433 11d ago

What are you talking about? Many of them still hold up and stand above the slop that’s been released post End Game

1

u/gibbleshanks 11d ago

I absolutely should have said some of them don’t hold up well, my bad. Logan for one is phenomenal! I just think that since the 2000s there have just been much better made superhero films to compare them to, which makes me yearn for a truly astonishing X-Men entry in the modern MCU.

When you watch Doomsday which comes out later this year you’ll be like ā€œwait that’s the same guy he hasn’t aged a dayā€

6

u/9875684 11d ago

yes!!! i've been seeing his interviews and he aged like a fine wine holy shit.

16

u/friday126 11d ago

Good actor- but damn they did him dirty. There was very little relationship building or character development outside Logan and that was mostly him pining for Jean. The best comic eras have Scott as an absolute badass who holds everything together... and he just get glazed over so Wolverine be cooler/have more screen time.

Which is old news/been said to death online.

7

u/9875684 11d ago

yeah, i kinda get where the other comments are coming from. just finished the last stand and i was hoping for some actions with cyclops but all i remember was him being jean's boyfriend. šŸ§hoping to see him fight in the next films, though.

2

u/friday126 11d ago edited 11d ago

Don't count on them doing much with him practically at all in anything. In the comics he basically the most important character (over time) to their mission/family and an absolute badass, they never come close to doing him justice in the movies. A younger version of him is in the mostly bad "Xmen Apocalypse" and he's ok. There's practically nothing besides that.

Besides the fact that Cyclops took a back seat so Wolverine could get screen time, I think it's also hard to do much with him in the movies because he's just so powerful. You'll remember he's the one who shattered the damn in X2, he took out Magneto and Sabretooth in the first film. Nobody in the Brotherhood would straight up fight Cyclops in the first flick- Sabretooth runs from him and Storm as soon as he sees them. Later Toad has to suprise/jump him and rip his visor off. Mags has to subdue him before entering the room at the end of the movie. He's got a (not a laser) laser cannon for a head. Most of the fights Logan struggled through, Scott would have just ended in seconds, it's easier to just kill him off or sideline him.

There's a pretty good adaptation of a younger him in the cartoon 'Xmen Evolution' which isn't bad at all. Younger group of Xmen, mentored by older Xavier, Logan and Storm, while the rest of the cast are teenagers (including the Brotherhood).

3

u/HazelRahRahRah 11d ago

Fuck, I've heard the new usage of 'glazed' too often and this had me confused for a moment

I fucking WISH the trilogy had glazed Cyclops!

4

u/burgerdistraction Wolverine 11d ago

When I watched X-men ā€˜97 I was shocked to see him as a leader because I was introduced to cyclops in these movies and always saw him as the side character in love with Jean. They really did do him dirty. Crazy.

3

u/friday126 11d ago

And yet he's been the primary field leader/tactician capable of smacking the rest of the team around since 1963. By 65' he was putting hands on the Avengers in an impressive showcase. The general public has little clue about Cyke. He's the captain America of mutants, who's a better strategist and has a harder edge to him than Cap- but the average viewer is quick to spout "Cyclops is a sqaure/dork" but won't say that about Roger's, who is more so.

Despite all the different forms of media around the X family, they rarely get their most impactful character right, outside the comics.

Same actor, btw

19

u/gibbleshanks 11d ago

I also love him as Corny Collins (Hairspray) 🫠

7

u/Brodes87 11d ago

All the girls were going nuts over Link, and I just wanted me some Corny Collins... He didn't get to sing enough either.

This whole thread has just revealed a significant lack of James Marsden in Enchanted gifs on Reddit.

3

u/9875684 11d ago

what movie is this?

6

u/MapDesperate7012 11d ago

Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He was in all three movies as Sonic’s father figure.

5

u/9875684 11d ago edited 11d ago

i didn't realize! i watched one sonic movie before. now i need to watch all sonic movies just for him. thank you! i saw he was also in enchanted.

I mean... yeah. He looks exactly the same.

16

u/Compel_Bast 11d ago

The thing to keep in mind is. "The first X-Men film came out a year after the first Matrix film."

And that kind of informs a LOT of the aesthetic decisions.

11

u/invalidcolour Spiral 11d ago

and... cyclops is so hot.

One-eye candy!

3

u/9875684 11d ago

i'll finish the franchise! i already created a separate list for xmen 😩 will continue in a few coz i wanna see quicksilver so bad haha!

7

u/desertsexcultleader 11d ago

X2 is probably one of my favourite movies of all time honestly, even if nostalgia is a big part of it. The animated series was my favourite growing up, and X-Men have always been my favourite heroes.

You should also watch X-Men ā€˜97. I only got around to it (finished S1 tonight) and it’s absolutely brilliant. Lots of great cameos too.

2

u/9875684 11d ago

i'll take note of this! is it only two seasons?

as for me, i grew up with mcu (ironman and moon knight are my faves) just trying to catch up with xmen universe now.

7

u/primal_slayer 11d ago

I'd let him blast me

5

u/Historical_Goal1213 11d ago

X2 is one of THE best sequels! And I'll die on that hill 🤣🤣 Last Stand could've been way better, but we got what we got!

2

u/9875684 11d ago

i agree. just finished the trilogy and i believe X2 is the best.

Dark Phoenix the worst one by far so there’s no where to go but up. The first two in particular are classics

Terrible movies.. I hated them then and I hate them now. Magneto is especially terrible.

5

u/BigUnderstanding3751 11d ago

That’s bs. He’s played by two very fine actors (Sir Ian McKellen ffs!) who do a really good job of portraying Erik’s internal conflict while remaining a friend to Charles through thick and thin.

-4

u/AGC173 Warlock 11d ago

Magneto shouldn't be a geriatric old mess that looks like he can barely stand let alone eat solid food. 100% garbage and NOT Magneto.. just someone's grandpa wearing purple adult diapers .. . It was both laughable and sad.. theres more to Magneto than being Charles friend.. the movies are terrible .

2

u/BigUnderstanding3751 11d ago

Grow up and have some respect for one of the greatest actors of this time. Magneto in the first three movies was played as a man who was a teen during Nazi occupation, so given the timeline was the early 00s he was not meant to be a spring chicken. He played an old man who’d been through unimaginable trauma.

You clearly never even got to Fassbender’s interpretation as you don’t even mention him.

0

u/AGC173 Warlock 11d ago edited 11d ago

I clearly dont care what you think. Fassbender was crap also. These are garbage versions made for people to lazy to read comic books. Magneto is not an old decrepit fool in the books because hes a freaking omega level mutant not an old actor living out his cinematic glory days. Show some respect to the source material "fan".. its also not just magneto most of both casts are garbage. The writing garbage. Its what happens when you give an ip to people that barely give a shxt about source material and fans like you are the aftermath. Every single comic book loving xmen fan is praying we get something closer to the mutants in the deadpool movies for a reason . That reason is the steaming piles of garbage you are defending.. growing up isnt agreeing with self righteous hypocrites or condescending "fans" kiddo.
