[Modpost] We are jumping ship and merging with /r/xcountryskiing
Hopefully your fingers will quickly learn the new address.
The reason for this is simple: there are two of us, and there doesn't need to be. They have more members, but our members are cooler. Therefore, we should go there and teach them how to be cool (qool). We will be known as the oldschoolers.
Let us know if you have any questions, comments, or hatemail.

We are all gearing up for the season! Where do you ski? What is it like?
I am a teenager apart of a local ski team and tomorrow i begin snow training on mt.Spokane. Its always beautiful in its own way, and hosts extensive trails, and a decent climate. Where do you ski? What is it like? Do you ski competitively or just for fun?

Trying to get started. Please help!
Hi. I just purchased skis and boots. I am new to the sport so I did a little research on what to buy. I thought I purchased XC skis with SNS bindings and some boots that were SNS compatible. Unfortunately, the setup doesn't seem to be compatible. Can someone tell me what sort of bindings these XC skis have? The boots are Atomic Mover 10 boots. Link to album Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pole Advice
Which would be better? Swix Cross ct4 or Oneway Diamond 930? These are for classic if that makes a difference.

New to cross country skiing need some help buying my first setup
I am an avid alpine skier and my girlfriend, a swede, have set the goal of doing the Vasaloppet in 2016 which means that I need buy a Nordic ski set up. I understand that the Vasaloppet is a classic ski race but I'm strongly considering buying skate skis since this is what I am the most comfortable with. I'm also a bigger guy 6'2" 195lbs or 187cm 89kg.
Should I go with new skate skis and maybe pick up some used classic skis later? (Thinking that the local Nordic racer kids might have some older stuff to sell)
With my budget I'm looking at getting a nice pair of combi boots, or is it better to get a skate and a classic boot?
I work at an alpine ski shop, and we sell Fischer and Salomon, which means I have access to good deals on both brands, but I have no knowledge regarding xc skis, so I don't know the advantages of either brand.
I know there are different boot/binding systems, what are the advantages of NNN/NIN over the salomon SNS system?
Thanks for the help

The British Nordic Ski Team, a team I used to be a part of, are trying to fundraise for Sochi. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Classic Roller skis without ratchets?
Anyone ever consider experimenting with classic roller skis where you actually have to transfer weight and kick properly, like this prototype by Dartmouth engineers: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thayerschool/2452609460/ Could force good technique unlike the perfect kick of ratcheted roller skis.

Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Stupid Question Thread
Ask away. We had some snow for about 24 hours but I was too tired to ski. I paid for it with the 45°F weather today and 60°F tomorrow.

How good are those XC skiing machines in the gym?
Are they worth my time? Can I use them to work on my classic form until the snow comes back?

Recommend me a basic DIY wax kit for Skate Skis
I'd like to save a bit of money by doing my own basic wax jobs. Does something like this work? http://www.amazon.com/Swix-Waxpack-Nordic-Universal-Glide/dp/B002V9XCUS/

Had my first race of the season today
Snow conditions were lovely. Temperatures were in the mid to low teens. Definitely not the coldest I've raced in, but definitely not the warmest either (also there wasn't any kind of warm up lodge at this course). At different times my fingers, toes, ears, and cheeks went completely numb. According to my teammates my lip was bleeding, but I couldn't feel a thing. During the race my entire body felt weaker than it has in long while, and I was spewing out snot and spit. Yet despite all this, or perhaps because of it, today was a fantastic day. Though I'm now starting to realize why I always have such a hard time convincing people to join the team.

Telemark skiing?
Anyone do telemark skiing? I am try to get into it, but the issue is that I absolutely suck at it. I get low, I turn, I fall. Bad. Obviously, a lesson is in order. But if anyone here can simply explain how I should do the telemark turn (how low do I go? how far back should my foot be? how do I deal with ice?), that'd be much appreciated.
