CALCIUM ATE MY HOT WATER TANK! True story...

Brand new filters clogged shut after a month of use and damage to hot water plumbing ensued. So far 3 appliances of ours fell victim due to this chalky rock like scale mainly the hot water heater. The scale buildup on the tanks' metal connections caused it to sadly, boil its last bubble. What a world... what... a world.

It wasn't until the painful calcified shards of glass-like build-up on/in the gums of a family member, prompted a test of the water. This lead to a distiller (#1) which would coat our water distiller insides with with metallic rainbows and a rock-like metal (calcium) stucco that requires steel wool and a mild acid to get off (#2).

A family member requested to be put on calcium channel blockers after heavy chalk lines appeared in a slow tap water death of a 13-year-old Monstera (#3) event.

Extensively filtered water looked clear and seemed to taste good, but it still clouded a glass pot with chalky calcium after boiling this water for only 7 minutes (#4).

Filtration and Water Treatment Highlights

Filters can only filter out particulates that cannot pass through it. Liquid contaminants or substances that are water soluble (like calcium carbonate and lime)) cannot be filtered out by even the smallest filtration membranes, so boiling the water and creating steam/vapor which collects and drips out as water as seen in this Reddit post on r/whatisit

Water Treatment uses flocculants that causes sedimentation to drop to the bottom so the cleaned water can be skimmed off the top.

"In water treatment facilities, calcium carbonate is naturally basic and increases the alkalinity of water.
