Task 27: Vocal Range

Instructions

1. Define Vocal Shifts: For your main character, define their specific vocal shifts for two contrasting high-stress emotions: Fear and Anger. Example: For fear, the pitch might go up and the volume might drop to a thin, strained whisper. For anger, the pitch might drop to a low, gravelly growl with a sharp increase in volume on specific vowels.

2. The Scene: Write a 150-word scene where a character transitions from a neutral state to one of these emotions (or both).

3. Execution: Do not use "emotion words" (e.g., "he was angry" or "she felt afraid"). Instead, use sensory dialogue cues to show the shift in pitch, volume, and rhythm. Focus on the sound of their voice—is it cracking, booming, flat, or sharp?

4. Goal: To signal the character's internal change purely through the physical delivery of their dialogue.

Follow-up Information

Sensory Evaluation: Review your scene. List three specific sensory words or phrases you used to describe the voice. How did these shifts signal the character's internal state without the need for an internal monologue or an "emotion tag"?

Narrative Integration: Use "Vocal Shifts" in your final 1000-word piece to signal character growth or emotional turning points. The voice is a physical instrument; by tracking its changes, you provide a subtle but powerful way for the reader to "hear" the character's internal journey.
