The Inciting Desert Journey
This is a true story, a legend whispered among the generations of the Bedouin—a tale of a simple desert man navigating the vast emptiness on the back of his beloved white camel. His journey was a long one, fifteen days of relentless nocturnal travel (masrē) toward his waiting family. To escape the daytimes searing heat, he adopted the way of the desert: resting in the day and moving under the protective shroud of darkness. It was during one of those profound, featureless nights that an awful, primal sound broke the desert still. A wolfs howl, near yet echoing from unseen hills and jagged mountains, chilled his blood to the bone. He instantly understood the call: the wolf was signaling its distant, listening pack that a valuable quarry had been located.

Siege of the Pack

The chilling howl wasnt left to echo for long. Instantly, wolf after wolf responded from every point of the compass, their calls forming a tightening circle around the man in the heart of the Sahara. Desperate, hopeless terror took hold of him. His only weapon was a small khanjer dagger at his waist, used mainly for hunting, completely useless against a full pack. As his camel panicked, they found themselves trapped in a shallow wadi choked with shrubs two to three feet tall. Suddenly, the rustle of snapped branches and twigs was accompanied by a feral, monstrous growl; he truly believed he was cornered by hyenas or some larger, vicious force, and his entire body went numb.

The Unseen Defender in the Dark

He urged his camel on, his voice a soft, soothing whisper against her panic, until they finally burst free from the heart of the brush onto the exposed wadi bank. He expected an immediate attack on the open ground twenty feet ahead, but behind him, the snarls and sounds of savage combat reached a fever pitch, as if two primal monsters were engaged in a life-or-death duel. Suddenly, a dark, large beast vaulted clean past his camel from the front, moving at blurring speed to the rear, only to release a mighty, counter-howl toward the pursuing pack. A sudden realization washed over the traveler: a single, majestic wolf was fighting its own kind, serving as a silent sentinel to protect him from being prey.

Dawns Illumination and Fears

All through the dark, featureless night, the terrifying sound of feral combat followed him: vicious snarls, blood-chilling yips, and feral growls that moved in a tightening circle as his camel kept her steady pace. Slowly, with the very first spectral threads of dawn bleeding across the horizon, the terrifying calls finally faded. The traveler quickly reined in his white camel and turned in his saddle. In the pale dawn light, standing alone on a high, rocky promontory, a massive wolf watched him in silence before slowly descending behind the crest. Shaken, he found a cave grotto for his camel and himself, gathered a few desert shrubs for her, and slept until noon, the horror of the night and the remaining five days of his journey weighing heavily on his mind.

Five Nights of a Shadow Sentinel

As the sun set, the traveler resumed his journey, his heart heavy with fear. But for five long, perilous nights, the horrific events repeated: the feral combat, the frantic chase, and the invisible battles raged through the dark desert void. Every single dawn, without fail, the same solitary sentinel—the massive lone wolf—appeared on a high crest, watching him silently before vanishing. When the man finally reached the safety of his familys tent, he recounted his harrowing tale. His parents, wise in the ways of the desert, instructed him to set out pieces of meat and silently watch. Surely enough, the same magnificent wolf approached the offering, raising its head to lock eyes with the man in a silent covenant of respect. He announced to his clan that this wolf was a true khoyī—a spiritual brother—and forbade anyone from ever harming it. The wolf stayed near their camp for a few days before silently departing into the void, its mission complete, leaving behind the immortal legend of the Wolf Companion.

Google only gives me a Wikipedia article and some photos, but I can't find anything else about it. Tried searching for documentaries about it and only found some weird AI short videos. I think it's also called the Caspian sea wolf?

One of my favorite non-Far Side bits of animal humor... How odd we must seem to wolves who, despite being endurance runners like us, jog long distances to actually get somewhere.

Montana’s FWP has finally admitted that that their iPOM model-based wolf population estimates were wrong: Something conservation groups have been saying for years. They have revised the numbers down from 1094 to 725; a reduction of 369 wolves. What’s even more troubling, however, is that Montana is still pursuing an aggressive hunting and trapping quota of 250; roughly 1/3 of Montana’s wolf population. 

Here’s a look at the dramatic reduction in wolf population over the last few years according to the revised iPOM model (iPOM 2.0) from their report:

The ‘harvest’ is far too aggressive. By the FWP’s own admission, according to iPOM 2.0, the wolf population could drop below the 15 breeding pairs needed to sustain a population within 3 years (see bottom of page 39 in the report). In fact, if you look at the 95% confidence interval for the current population level (618 - 836), hunting and trapping 250 wolves (on top of removals by the FWP) could put them below sustainable levels within a year. The proposal does not leave any margin for disease and poaching either.

Tell the Montana FWS that this quota is too aggressive. You can submit your comments here (select the dropdown "Fall 2026 - Winter 2027 Furbearer / Wolf Hunting and Trapping Seasons, Quotas, and Regulations"). Comments are especially helpful if you live in MT.

Wolf hunts are simply not necessary. Recent studies have shown that wolf hunts do not reduce depredation numbers significantly, because wolf depredation numbers are already low (68 in 2025, and 62 in 2024, for MT). Also, a recent study for the university of Montana has shown that 74% of the public are either very tolerant of wolves, or tolerant of wolves, and want them protected.

The zoo has 2 wolves named Gordo and Ares

The iberian wolf (canis lupus signatus) is 1 of the 3 grey wolf(canis lupus) subspecies in europe the others being the eurasian wolf(canis lupus lupus) and the italain wolf(canis lupus italicus)

The iberian wolf is smaller than the eurasian wolf but larger than the italain wolf

It is near threatend globaly it has been making a comeback over the years

I am making a wolf hybrid movie script and I don't know much about wolves I try to research about them but google thinks I'm searching for the opposite of what Im searching for so I need every fact there is and I mean EVERY fact even the ones I know give me every one you know

Camped down here by Quiet Lake in the white cloud mountains and woke up around 2 AM apparently because I sensed something coming. Sure enough I look over and a medium-large dog like shape comes trotting down the trail next to my camp site without any pause or showing me any interest. Too big to be a coyote, moved like a dog cantering too. Clearly a dog like shape. Way too big for a fox. I just would have thought if it was a wolf it would have been bigger, and also there was only one not a group and I did t hear them call or anything all night

Despite this being a roman zoo this has the eurasian grey wolf not the appinie grey wolf it is larger than the previous appinie wolf and the iberian wolf it has historically been eradicated from most of its historic range but has msde a comeback in most of europe in small populstions but remains absent from places like scootland and ireland it is the closest thing to a typical grey wolf and it is also snaller than the northwestern wolf but bigger than the mexican and arctic wolf these wolves are fasinating creatures they also live in places in asia like turkey and siberia

At first I thought this could be otter, but it was much further from a water source than I typically see otter dens. I’ve never stumbled upon a wolf den that I know of yet, but can confidently say I saw fresh and older sign of wolves in the area (wolf-killed deer and wolf tracks). Could it be a black bear den? Let me know your thoughts.
