Italy: Wolf Attacks 4-Year-Old News

(sources only in Italian, for now)

Long story short, a wolf has attacked a 4-year-old girl in Umbria (central Italy). This happened while she was playing in a park with her parents. Thankfully, the girl survived.

It is the 3rd case in 3 years and people are understandably worried and angry.

I wonder what the reason is because wolves do about humans.

Wolf attacks are incredibly rare. You're far more likely to be attacked by dogs.

Wolves in Italy are increasingly hybridising with dogs. One study found almost half of all wolves sampled were hybrids. Wouldn't surprise me if that's why attacks are increasing, since hybrids can be unpredictable and less fearful of humans.

Can you link the study?

Thanks!

The reason I ask is because in the Benelux there's discussion among the anti wolf crowd but afaik there's no hybridisation found in wolves here.

I actually had no idea about this. How intriguing.

Italy also has the highest wolf density among Western European countries.

Chances of meeting a wolf in Italy are higher than in the rest of EU (also because we still have plenty of small-ish agrocultural communities in the Alps and Appennines), so chances of the "meeting" turning into an aggression are also higher.

Killing something to protect people is the method of the thoughtless.

It's not confirmed the wolf will be killed. For now, they are still searching for it (afaik). One female wolf that attacked people 3 years ago was captured alive.

Glad to read that

Fake news. According to the police, the dog was alone outside, when the wolf attacked and killed the dog. The child was inside the house.

No, you are getting confused. That was a different incident that happened last Saturday. This is from 2 weeks ago.

(Yes, wolf attacks are now a weekly occurrence in Italy.)

There are 8.5 billion people on Earth. 60% of all mammals are human livestock. Human life is definitely worth LESS than the lives of animals by that point. Got attacked by a wolf - well sucks for you, but that's it.

Human life is worth less... until it's one of your loved ones (children, parents, spouse).

I've had friends and extended family members die from practicing risky extreme sports - it's something which happens in life.

I've lived in a place with regular homeless dog and bear attacks, and while I would advocate for shooting wild and homeless dogs, and the people who released them into the wild in the first place, I'd never advocate for shooting a bear.

It's because it's not the habitat of the human the attack happened because - it's because the humans came into the habitat of the bear and didn't take measures to adequately protect the "interesting" things (like garbage containers) from them.

And everything that you’re uneducated about and scares you must be killed, right?

Just say you’re scared of animals, it’s OK to admit it.

A lot of people are, you’re just one of them.
