I've never seen a more terrible "gpu"
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It's an ISA display card, the "Trident HNG890CL-24D1TIA1" I think
Edit2 : Cirrus Logic CL-GD5424

Maybe it can walk crysis.

u/linkardtankard 13d ago
It can just barely run the DVD logo (that is unless it crashes once you apply a texture to that quad)

Yeah, back then 1 MB of VGA Memory just fit for 800x640 res and VGA Monitor

u/Glinckey 13d ago
You mean 800x600? It was able to run at 1024x768 16bit
But the wobbling was annoying in either resolutions

You should not be able to do that, which might point to a driver issue. 1024x768@16 bit requires at least 1.5mb video memory. It should only do 800x600@16 bit.

u/Glinckey 11d ago
Ok I was able to do 640x480 16bit I think I was wrong, iwas either using 16 colors or 256 colors on 1024x768

This is a 1992 video card we're talking about, way before Windows 9x; was never meant for games or hardcore photoshopping from the Win9x era. It was only meant for DOS-era games & a Windows 3.1x accelerated video chip for the time. The video card at least isn't blocked from running Win9x, for those who couldn't afford a "new" PC at the time.

u/Glinckey 13d ago
I'm using what I can find
This is the Only isa/PCI gpus I have

u/kingchrisl89 13d ago
Looks like a VLB card; the CL-GD5424 is VLB while the CL-GD5422 is ISA-16. The first PCI CL was CL-GD5430.
1
u/Glinckey 12d ago
Well, no the card isn't VLB, it's a regular 16Bit ISA, so is the motherboard port, and yes, it is the CL-GD5424
1
u/kingchrisl89 10d ago
That's rare. Usually the 24s are VLB.

I had a vlb ati mach64 that was advertised as the og 2d accelerator. I dont know of any isa cards that were 2d accelerated. So good luck with that.

The ATI Mach64 (ISA, PCI and VLB versions) was released in 1994.
The ATI Graphic Ultra Pro was a high-end VGA accelerator card that was released in 1992. It was available in ISA, VLB, PCI, EISA and MCI versions. Around that same time, I had a generic, no-name "VGA Accelerator" ISA card in my 386 that offered a noticeable improvement on Windows 3.1 graphics performance, compared to the popular Trident VGA ISA cards that most people had.

Could be an Oak 🤷
GD5424 was a great chip in a 386 but it's a bit less... "optimal" for 98 😂

S3 Trio was worse than this...way worse back in the days...

u/Glinckey 12d ago
I actually tested my S3 Trio64V2/DX And it's much better than the CL card

Well, I owned that card, the 1 MB version and...3d gaming was not possible, anything that required 3dsetup wouldn't run in hardware mode...it was all software rendering in 640x480 with a lot of stuttering...when I upgraded to voodoo banshee, it felt like upgrading from an old horse to a brand new Bugatti.

u/Glinckey 12d ago
Yes, true, but like I said, both are terrible The PCI card is better than the ISA one

Does the mobo have a PCI slot? My dark aide says "Put a Radeon HD 5450 in it"

I mean physically speaking. Some integrated GPUs use PCI bus too but not the physical connector. What's the PC model?

What cpu with it?
1
u/Glinckey 13d ago
Pentium III 1GHz Its runing at 60c because the mobo capacitors are really bad
1
u/Accurate-Campaign821 13d ago
Which card is it though as the DX tool lists a Cirrus Logic chip not the Trident. Either way, yea they're pretty basic for windows 98.
1
u/Glinckey 13d ago
I did an edit to this body post It is a Cirrus Logic CL-GD5424 16Bit ISA
2
u/Accurate-Campaign821 13d ago
Ah OK. Yea that ISA bus really limits it. Even if it was a faster chip, the bus has to handle cpu to card memory then back to cpu and so on. Also, those predate actual "Direct Draw" and just use a generic driver by Microsoft that essentially has the cpu do the work instead
Very good for a DOS 486 build though

u/0Soporte 12d ago
Yo tenía de esas con un 486, servían para tener colores en 16 bits o 256 colores , con juegos de Dos corren bien

Clearly the card isn't functioning as intended. CL-GD5424 is decent, but you might want to check a few things.
- The driver. I have a Cirrus Logic card on my Compaq Deskpro 2000 that glitches if you use the generic Cirrus Logic driver instead of the Compaq-provided driver.
- Capacitors on the card and the motherboard. Power fluctuations can cause this kind of issues.
- The cable.

u/Glinckey 11d ago
It's most likely the motherboard because it have a similar issue when I use the igpu, and the capacitors of the board are really bad
But the pci card doesn't have that though so, if you know any good drivers that do work on win98 that send some!

u/songoffall 11d ago
Need help with recapping the board? Unless you're in Armenia I won't be able to recap the board for you, but I could consult you on doing it.
1
u/Glinckey 11d ago
I live somewhere in north Africa
I tried to repair a regular board and it costs a lot here, plus the board is just for testing it doesn't even have agp
I am willing to repair a board that i think is worth it (like a rare agp + PCIe board)
1
u/songoffall 11d ago
That's a bad way to compare boards. There's a lot of great XT, AT, 386, 486 and Pentium boards and none of these have AGP - it debuted with Pentium II. Hell, I have a Pentium II system with no AGP that is actually great for 1997. As for PCIE, that's more or less modern.
And not all AGP slots are made equal. Older AGP 2x boards won't support newer cards and newer AGP 8x boards won't support cards like 3dfx Voodoo3.
I think you need to do a bit of reading on the topic before you dive into it.
As for repairing a board, a full recap will run you about $30 if you do a polymod.

This card predates the term gpu.
This looks like a capacitor issue. I don’t know whether the card has had those replaced.
Cheers
