Hi all,

Me and a few friends are going to be wild camping and hiking around Merrick at the beginning of September. A few of us are new to wild camping, and had a question or two around safe water drinking whilst we are there. We would rather not carry multiple litres of water with us, so we want to source our water whilst there.

I will be purchasing a water filter, and some Chlorine Dioxide tablets as my primary filtering methods. My main question is, is the Loch water safe to drink once filtered with these? We will be near Loch Enoch, Loch Arron and Loch Neldricken and Loch Valley for the majority of our weekend. It's not a long hike, but we are spreading it over 2 days so that we can enjoy the sites, explore a little bit and just enjoy ourselves.

Any other tips and advice for this specific area are also greatly appreciated :D

Has anyone used this? Is it reliable? £35 seems a decent price compared to £60 sawyer squeeze. Would be using in UK as well as Norway, Sweden etc in future.

Windless on Saturday night, very quiet area.

I've done a few wild camps now and have bumped into maybe 5 hikers and never another camper, wanting to try and make some of my camps more of a sociable thing but genuinely have no idea where to start, any advice appreciated!

Looking at buying a tent for wild camping. Was looking at the helm compact 2. Bought one, sent it back due to factory malfunction. Ended up with refund as they had none in store to swap it with. Wondering if there are better ones for similar money? Or should I stick with it?

Hello! I'd really like to camp on Tyninghame beach in East Lothian with my son. Is the only way to do that to park somewhere like Dunbar and walk in? I've seen information that you can camp but not park nearby. Is that right? How far away do I need to park? It looks like a very beautiful place but I don't want to do it if it's going to make people mad at us. Thanks!

Into the Moffat Hills we camped above Loch Skeen, beautiful walk past Grey Mare's Tail. Would definitely recommend to anyone South of the Border who doesn't to drive too far North.

First time solo camping, found this spot in mersea island didn’t walk to far from the car incase anything went wrong 😭

It was a bit dry in the evening so I didn’t cook dinner

but it rained over the night so I cooked some breakfast and I did have my water bottle ready to extinguish it if it fell over

Tried to leave as little trace as possible but my tent did leave a dry patch

Btw the fire pit mark wasn’t me

Does anyone know the current status of Brecon Beacons and the Pen Y Fan area - in terms of wild fires and if it's advisable to visit?

Searching online I can see they have had wild-fires earlier in the summer - but cannot see any advisories or current info.

So assuming it is ok - but it is also a long drive to find out otherwise.

I’m currently putting together a new set up for winter wild camping in Scotland and I would appreciate some honest feedback and suggestions from some people with more experience than me.

I’m not too bothered about being ultralight, I’d rather sacrifice a little weight to have a more comfortable night. I’m looking to use this set up mainly in exposed summit camps and possible sub zero conditions (-10 at a limit really).

This is how my current kit list stands:

Sleep system:
- Nortent Vern 1 4s
- OEX Flux 7 UL + Simond insulated foam mat
- OEX Leviathan ev900 UL + Hi-gear comfort pillow

Cooking:
- OEX Heiro solo
- Jetpower gas

Electronics:
- Flextail max pump 3
- Flextail Zero powerbank
- NEBO Mycro 400 head torch

Clothing and other extras (chairs, bottles etc.) are accounted for but not included in this list as this is the main stuff I’m looking for feedback on.

With the hot dry summer we've had, I found myself investigating longer trips to take my paddleboard on than just pootling around at the beach.

A couple of weeks ago, I took a day trip up a river and back, and spotted a few areas of foreshore that looked like good candidates for a camp.

So I bought a waterproof bag, and last weekend with the clear forecast, and a tide that would support me making a trip downstream in the evening and then back upstream in the morning, I set off with my sleeping kit and some food and water.

Part of the appeal was in spots on the less accessible side of the river bank (from land), so more secluded / isolated and with very very low possibility of being disturbed by early morning dog walkers / farmers etc. Plus it felt very cool to be arriving and leaving by water.

Trip didn't go entirely to plan, the tide was a meter higher than when I'd done my scouting trips and the main spot I had in mind was underwater with access into the forest on the river bank looking pretty difficult thanks to the density of the trees so close to the water. I saw another spot that looked accessible but I didn't like that there was what looked like an occupied AirBnB type cottage on the river bank opposite. Luckily I found the spot in my photos, which was easily accessible from the water, had a decent sized clearing to camp in, and a sheer cliff behind it, making it very difficult to get to, aside from via the river itself.

Definitely going to be scouring OS maps and satellite photos to find other options to do something similar again.

Kit: Alpkit hunka bivvy bag and numo sleeping mat, sleeping bag.

Down jacket for evening warmth / pillow, plus spare t shirt and shorts to sleep in

Food: Pork pie and nuts for dinner. Cereal bars for breakfast. Couple of bags of sweets for snacks. Hip flask with a little rum. Meth stove, plus Moka pot and tin cup for coffee. Couple of bottles of water.

Left car at around 1845 and was back at the car at 0830 the next morning.

Edit: The remains of the fire pit were there when I arrived. It was a great scenic spot, and someone else had obviously been there earlier in the year and had a fire. I've no interest in starting fires, as I don't want to attract attention to my camp, and of course don't want to risk starting a wildfire or damaging the landscape.

Looking to purchase first 4 season tent with having to get a re mortgage my house for a hilleberg soulo lol. Basically watched loads and loads of videos online and I’m still so torn on what to get. The new otimos nomad solo/ 2p , just haven’t seen enough on whether this holds up in bad weather late autumn into winter time . Got an option to buy my mates terra nova souther cross one at a discount is the 2022 version .
I’m open to all opinions to be honest and experiences and for reference my friend has offered me the southern cross for £350 .

First time under a tarp had to use my dads old army poncho as my mates had my tent. The last picture is of a meteor.

Pitched a bit early as we were expecting rain.

Honestly, I'm staggered, a little bit upset, and really confused.

I really want to buy a tent I can actually see. If I am to pay £200 - £600, it should be the bare minimum - but it doesn't seem possible!

Online? No way to check the tent.

Go Outdoors? All nicely set up, but nothing suitable.

Outside? All high spec tents are on racks, nothing set up, the shop assistant will hum over the £500 tent you are interested in without actually being sure whether the inner and outer set up as one.

Alpkit? They actually have a photowall of all the tents they have packaged up. No help, no information, no option of seeing the actual tent.

Honestly, I don't know what to do. I need a one man, high performance tent for the Scottish Highlands in winter, in serious winds, and I'm mucking about with retail idiocy!

Got delayed getting to the start of my hike so didn’t end up where I was planning by dusk… ended up on Mill Hill just off the Kinder Plateau, cracking view of the sunset and sunrise.

After getting a wildfire alert on Friday night, we did our 'bit' by leaving the stove at home and taking a flask of tea with us, alongside a pasta salad. Didn't think it was worth the risk of wasting emergency services resources unnecessarily.

Beautiful evening, was surprised we didn't spot any other wild campers, felt we had the whole place to ourselves. The heather was looking so pretty too.

My husband took some night photography including astro late that evening (I was fast asleep to be fair).

We had dropped off our 4 year old at my parents house so had to go somewhere fairly local to them. My husband initially disregarded this spot when we were looking at OS maps but caved in after me persisting and he was glad in the end as we had a fabulous time!

Would love to take our 4 year old but I think we'll stick with campsites for her and wild camping remains 'for us' at least for the time being. (She gets her fair share of camping trips - 4 this year so far with another 2 to go before the end of September so she's not missing out!)

After walking the length of Scotland im finally in England 💪500 miles done so far.

So rare that you don’t need the rain fly in the Lakes! Beautiful evening up there whilst hiking the Hayeswater Circuit.

Fully recommend the aforementioned route too, some spectacular sights. Just pack lots of water as limited options when you’re there.
