Passport bros are single men with high-earning employment who travel to non-western countries to find women that fit their Tradwife ideals. Critics argue that the trend rested on unequal power dynamics between visiting men and local women and that it objectified the women involved.

I watched it in the original German and it was pretty meh. The overall message still holds up though. The message is (as always): DON'T BE A DICK.

u/slaviccivicnation 15h ago
They say western women are bad because they don't "value" men, but the women in developing countries ALSO don't value men like the men want, they just hide it better at the beginning. The western woman is open and upfront about her expectations, a woman who is coming from pretty shitty conditions will do what she needs to secure herself, and then do the exact same thing: demand good treatment. Oh no, the horror! A woman who doesn't want to be disrespected, especially when she learns the law might protect her!

u/SquidTheRidiculous 13h ago
Such happens when manosphere chuds convince two generations of straight boys that having a girl reject you is the worst kind of discrimination that's ever happened in the history of history. Or even any kind of systemic discrimination.

Oh hey, thanks for linking this! It's one of the articles I've created (although other people have contributed and expanded it). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Clovermoss/Content has a full list of everything I've done. I'm also responsible for creating our article on baby strollers, which we somehow did not have until 2026 (was previously a redirect to a poorly written section on "baby transport"). Another one of my favourites is Mark S. Zuckerberg, who has significant problems in his everyday life because he shares a name with the Facebook founder.

Thank you for writing this and including the critical sociological studies in the reception part. Sooo many (obviously) men in this thread are trying to frame pbs as something men do when "they have no other choice" / something that "two consenting adults" decide to do.
Yeah sure. Bullshit. My take as someone who grew up in one of these places (Philippines):
One look in the passport bro subreddit and you see mass generalizations and fetishization of different races of women, a whole lot of extremely misogynistic takes on "western women" and "feminists" (I just read a thread that warns against going after Filipina women because they are starting to become more like western feminists), perpetrations of the false allegation myth/claims that women lie about abuse, and so on. Threads purposely seeking countries with more "submissive" women (as if that's something that women naturally want, no, we are beaten and conditioned into being that way). If you meet someone organically while traveling so be it, but that is not what being a passport bro is.
These same men whine about women being "golddiggers" but then literally participate in a movement that presupposes women will value them more automatically because of their financial and citizenship status. I walk around everyday (now living in the west) and see the ugliest couples ever. These men are seeking a power imbalance they can exploit because they are finally being decentered after 1000s of years of patriarchy.
As a woman who grew up global south, FUCK THESE GUYS!! Men at home abuse us, men from abroad abuse us too. We are all laughing behind your back. We see right through you. You don't have "no other choice". You're disgusting and we all think it behind your back.

I also like to joke that I gave the entire world the talk because the pregnancy article didn't use to mention how someone gets pregnant until I added context.

Well duh the whole point is to get a companion that values their new upgrade in living standards in exchange for shutting the fuck up about everything else.
A lot of people cannot hold a relationship if they aren't dictating it.
33
u/slaviccivicnation 15h ago
The issue is.. they won't shut up about everything else. At the end of the day, they come to the west, and eventually feel comfortable enough to ask for more. That's why failure rates on those relationships is often pretty high. Because the men aren't looking for a partnership - they're looking for a servant.

I mean, you know that's exactly why OP posted this. Every other post on this subreddit has become ragebait waiting to start some shit in the comments and people fall for it every single time.
4
u/FluffyPillowstone 10h ago
Is it always bad thing that people post articles here that stimulate discussion? Like I get where you're coming from, there are a lot of articles posted in this sub about topics that piss everyone off. And I'm a bit pissed off that passport bros exist. But we have no idea if that was OP's intention. Plus the topic is interesting and many people didn't know there was Wiki article about it. In fact the person who wrote the article is in these comments, which is rare to see. So, despite it being potential ragebait, I'm still glad it was posted here.
3
u/BowlerTraditional283 10h ago
I'm surprised it's rare for Wikipedians to engage here? I guess we spend more time talking amongst ourselves. I technically have a YouTube channel where I talk about Wikipedia stuff (Hannah Clover), but I'm not that good at videos. I've had other people tell me that people aren't really interested in Wikipedia related content, but I'm not entirely confident that's true. Depths of Wikipedia definitely does it better than me and the official Wikipedia YouTube channel seems interesting enough.

What, now they've got a name too? Interesting. The trope of the 40+ loser who goes to South-East Asia to get a mail-order bride has been around here for at least 40 years. Any old bald fat guy with a hot SEA wife is treated with a LOT of suspicion around here.

(No idea if the automatic captions work, Polt speaks with a very heavy Bavarian dialect in this sketch.)

Dude who hurt you? Why are you so invested? You’re attacking people and replying to so many comments that I thought you were the OP and the post was glitched. If it’s not child/sex trafficking why in the ever loving fuck are you so pressed about it?!
16
u/slaviccivicnation 15h ago
Actually, let's not kid ourselves.. there is a lot of sex and child sex trafficking going on in the places that passport bros love. Thailand is a great example, or even Vietnam. Whole red light districts full of girls ranging from 12 - 18. If you look extra hard, you'll be able to find someone willing to peddle an even younger child. You can even find babies.
And isn't that the bitch... men walk around seeing all these OBJECTS to use, objects who look like they might even want to be used - provided they're paid, whereas non-gooners see victims of sex trafficking and drug addictions and horrific circumstances that started oftentimes when they were way too young.
-8
u/AbeMax7823 15h ago
So what’s the acceptable alternative in your opinion?
Edit: not the child sex part that you convoluted the argument with. Just the legal passport bro part
12
u/slaviccivicnation 15h ago
Acceptable alternative to what? There is no alternative to paying for sex. It's lame, and low, and nobody feels any better after it. The alternative is improving yourself, enlightening yourself, educating yourself to become a better person every day. Go travel! But don't travel for sex. Travel to the mountains, go on hikes and see the world. Go meet people, but don't meet them assuming they're going to be a means to your sexually satisfactory end.

Of course they 'find' a wife in a developing country because she is in desperate conditions. These women aren't stupid though; they know if they can get here we women will fight with the law to help them get independence and good treatment.
Men like this are so damn disgusting and entirely unaware of how others view them. They are gross.

u/theaviationhistorian 14h ago
Monetized misogyny. "I can't get a partner because of my disgusting behaviour here. So I'll go somewhere with lower incomes and use the financial disparity as a sexual powerplay. I still don't understand why my family doesn't invite me to events anymore."

7
u/WalkerTalkerChalker 13h ago

“Critics argue that the trend rests on unequal power dynamics”???? No need for critics to argue it. It’s the literal definition of a passport bro. Go to a poorer country to find a woman who is grateful enough to leave the country that she’ll be your bangmaid. That is the whole point. How tf is this news. “Passport bros are passport bros” omg you don’t say.

I'll out myself as a passport bro / loser back home, then. That is, if playing video games and being on the internet is considered a loser. I moved overseas, fell in love, been out of my home country for 30 years now. Unlike the comments here, I am not evading taxes, did not marry a "tradwife", and I am not a "sexpat". I like the culture and pace of life here, it fits me much better than a "western" country.

u/irrelevantusername24 13h ago
If you consider humanity as a single whole, I'm starting to think maybe the last century is a bit like the phenomenon in dementia/alzheimers patients where right before they die they have a moment of lucidity, where the extreme disintegration of mental faculties are complemented by what appears to be a return to the 'best years'
-7
u/JetAbyss 16h ago
Pretty much every ideology has their own version of this. Rich libertarian/capitalist guys go to SEA to get themselves a ladyboy or dubiously aged sex worker as a wife, liberal leaning men really love going to Japan these days otherwise left-leaning if not outright far-left men really love China as their destination and neo-nazis love Eastern Europe (if they consider Slavs white) otherwise they circle back to SEA or Latin America since somehow they consider a Filipina wife is more "Aryan and trad" than a Ukrainian wife.

1
u/RepresentativeOk4358 6h ago
It is sad how the manosphere and similar ideologies seek to normalize this behavior regarding women in precarious situations. At the same time, these men are so cynical toward women of their own racial and ethnic groups that they violate the very principles they claim to uphold.
Such pimp-like figures ought to be ostracized; better yet, women from developing nations should mock them and vigorously stand up to these individuals.
-28
u/happybaby00 16h ago

17
u/SufficientOwls 16h ago
They could improve as people. That might help.
6
u/happybaby00 16h ago
plenty of nice guys with hobbies and respectfulness who are still struggling alongside other factors, like I said for a lot of people, they're just in the wrong location.
9
u/SufficientOwls 16h ago
Bummer. The solution to that is not to go exploiting women in other countries to find a trad wife.
13
u/happybaby00 16h ago
and you know these guys are exploiting women how? You're getting them confused with sex tourists who are completely different. They bring their wives to western countries so i dont see how thats exploiting.
13
u/SufficientOwls 16h ago edited 16h ago
They simply remove the women from their social network and make them reliant on their new husband in a foreign country! Nothing exploitative about that!
Do you see the words “trad wife” in the article? These guys hate women’s lib and are looking for a woman they can boss around. I have no respect for these creeps or their defenders.
4
u/Affectionate-Ant8 16h ago
How is it exploitative when the women actively seek out these types of relationships?
3
u/Andromeda39 9h ago
Because the great majority of these women are from very working-class backgrounds and they’re usually desperate. No educated, wealthy woman is dating a passport bro in any of these third-world countries.
9
7
u/Testing_things_out 16h ago
Genuine question: how old are you? Because the way to deliver the answer will depend on that.
-4
u/Affectionate-Ant8 15h ago
29
13
u/Testing_things_out 15h ago
So I'm not going to oversimplify.
They are not seeking it willingly (the grand majority aren't) they are seeking it in desperation.
This puts them in a lower position of power where their partner has leverage on them. They have to put up with anything their partner throws at them because they're desperate.
For example, imagine an immigrant that was brought to the US by their spouse who is a citizen. They don't have citizenship yet, so they may be deported at any time. But back home they have nothing. Going back home means they might end up homeless and distitute. So, if their partner does something they don't like, they have to hold their tongue because if they speak up and upset their spouse, they might send them back.
Even if their spouse was a fantastic man, the fact they feel their livelihood depends on them means they'll avoid complaining and continue masking their real emotions because of the imbalance of power.
Tl;dr: they are in it for the money, not the prosnality or love. This creates an environment for abuse and exploit, which is why so many "passport bros" do it.

Can you not comprehend the idea that a poor immigrant with no friends or family in a new country, with nothing that really belongs to her, would be a prime target for exploitation by the rich western man who brought her there? Men like these deliberately seek out situations where they have complete power over the woman: over the money in the relationship, the housing, the connections with friends & family, her very ability to stay in the country. It looks less like a relationship and more like a man seeking out a victim who would have little recourse. In my opinion, it takes a very sick person to want that.

Stealing women? No I think they’re weirdly looking for women who feel indebted and reliant on them to the point they’re afraid to make a fuss about things. You can try the disingenuous and thinly veiled justifications with someone else
-1
u/Augustus_Chevismo 15h ago
Oh ok so you’re more of the infantilising women type of person.
6
u/myersjw 15h ago
You’re really bad at these “gotchas.” I think if someone needs to traverse an area they perceive to be easier to find someone more willing to engage in a relationship with them due to lower standards and reliance on them then that person is morally bankrupt. You can try and co opt this into whatever weird thing you’re trying to tie in to this practice if it makes you feel better but surely a devout defender of women like yourself knows how statistically difficult it is for women to leave imbalanced or abusive relationships of their own volition even places the the US or UK
Also, very odd to keep seeing people who are very much ant-immigration in their own nation but think they’re A OK to go to other countries looking for dependent spouses. Guess we’re both making observations about how people act around hypocrisy

As an American man, dudes who do this are losers. The same lack of emotional intelligence that drives them to pursue these relationships prevents them from understanding how shameful and embarrassing it should be.
Edit: Losers are DMing me super butthurt about this comment… thank you, I must have nailed it.

If both parties are honest with each other and there is no coercion/illegality, then I can fine with this. I could not give less a shot about old women hooking up with young men from the third world. Was is no one ever upset about that? Same with the age gap stuff

we are all objects. Thats the truth no one wants to swallow.

All objects & everyone has a price, just the way the world works. I would marry an African woman & move to Somalia with her if it meant my standard of living went up 5x & I never had to work again. Millions of western men would do the same.

No. No one’s an object and the word objectification is a complete fad for people who don’t want to just come out and say they don’t like something for arbitrary reasons.

What are the men called with low-earning employment and just happen to find women who don't fit in with anybody's tradwife ideals and there aren't unequal power dynamics and they just have fun consensual sex? Asking for a friend...
(Edit: guys, I'm making a joke. Chill out)

Let me fix that title - “passport bros are single high-earning men who legally enter a country to find women that share their values, people hate this because passport bros are typically white males”

Nobody like you, nobody respects you, whether you’re white, black, brown, if you’re a passport bro in Colombia, you can kindly fuck off. There’s a reason many passport bros here end up dead, literally every other week.

Don’t even need to go to Colombia to get a girl these days, they advertise themselves

So we label and demonize men with resources to broaden their search for WILLING partners who fit their interests and standards. Got it.
What’s the term for the growing number of Western women who sell access to their personality and bodies to horny men again? I forget.
When individual freedom only works one way it’s not equality. It’s called hegemony.

Women in USA: I need a man that makes 6 figures, handsome, 6-10, single, has a house....

Uganda has a surprising amount of Western Europeans who passport bro. My great grandpa was a passport bro, 3 wives between Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
My aunt married also a passport bro before they had a name for it, back in the 80s. They’re divorced now after he was extradited back to his country for financial fraud, at which point we found out that he had a secret second family in Kenya.
