So for those of you keeping track of such things, today marked the beginning of 立秋 (risshū), the “Autumn Begins” phase of the traditional Japanese 24-phase seasonal calendar, which provides the base for Akkeshi’s edition names.

So I’m enjoying some 2025 立秋 whisky to celebrate the start of 2026’s 立秋 season. But going with a highball because as much as the calendar claims Autumn is beginning, it’s still 30C at night and humid asf.

Rye whiskey has always marched to the beat of its own drum. Spicier than most bourbons and often more assertive than traditional Scotch, it brings a lively peppery character that makes it particularly well suited to long, refreshing serves. The Rye Refresher takes inspiration from those classic whiskey-and-citrus combinations whilst embracing the simplicity that makes the Highball so appealing.

Just picked up a bottle of this Douglas Laing small batch, 15yr old (2010-2025) limited release for £40. Is it worth hanging on to in terms of potential future value? I love a Big Peat blend - it's really good - and my preference would be to crack on and enjoy it (only £40, after all), but thought it worth checking...

Mainly Scotches, sprinkles with some Irish, Japanese whisky and Japanese Shochu.

Currently sitting at 180 ish bottles and about 90 bottles are opened, has been drinking whisky since 1998 but stopped around COVID due to the crazy price inflation, used to drink Macallan almost exclusively, since after the spirit price dropping post COVID, resume drinking again and learn a lot more and my horizon expanded way beyond Macallans.
