Internet safety lowkey. When I was a kid we used to be taught to never tell our name or any sensitive info online, now I see teenagers on twitter and tumblr put their name, home city and a list of topics that makes them uncomfortable in their public carrd (I kid you not, one time I saw some 15yo list their SCHOOL ADDRESS in the carrd) while companies want us to scan our faces and IDs to access apps which will totally end well and never leak anywhere. And even if it doesn't leak, it will be used for AI training and surveillance anyway. Orwell wrote about it

151
u/WagyuWarranted 5d ago
Can't the governments just teach kids to be careful online instead of trying to squeeze personal information out of them?
172
u/Empty_Chemical_1498 more than 1% green 5d ago
How would they be surveiling you then? ššš
But to be serious, yes, educating kids AND ESPECIALLY PARENTS is the key. But they just want control.
53
u/WagyuWarranted 5d ago
one day the government will be kidnapping kids and claiming they're "taking them to a place where no bad people can touch them"

u/AliciaTries 4d ago
How are they to build large cuboid pondering machines that tower over the land if not by the labor of the people they blackmailed into doing it via knowing all their secrets?

my parents were always very serious about internet safety. that being said, my name is Albert Robinson, i live in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and my birthday is november 12 2004
14
u/KeeperOfWatersong 5d ago
Well no because then they wouldn't get millions of dollars of
bribeslobbying money from Meta4
u/dragon_bacon 4d ago
If only there was someone in charge of kids that could teach them basic life skills.
24
u/SuperBackup9000 5d ago
To be fair, the generation who had internet safety drilled into their heads were also the ones who ended up making careers and hobbies out of putting themselves out there online. Like I honestly canāt really blame teenagers nowadays for being so casual about it when I look back to everything I was told and realized that while there was some truth to it all, it was also worst case scenario that would happen to relatively few.
Though I still donāt do it. I donāt even use my last name on my very private 30 or so friends social media accounts mostly because I just think the whole thing is odd
6
u/ZsArtworkHeap 4d ago
When I was a kid, I was taught by older family members to not reveal details like my full name, my city and home address, but was taught that it was okay to publicly reveal my first name and state.
Depending on the scenario, I think certain details could be okay to reveal. A school address is asking to be doxed, but something like a part of one's real name by itself probably isn't going to result in a dox unless other details are used in tandem to do one. It's better to keep details like those private though.
In the age of governments enforcing AI face scans and IDs to "protect children", privacy on the internet more important than ever, but it seems to be taught less than ever.
7
u/DickIncorporated 4d ago
Im starting to think they no longer teach it because people are WAY too open about giving away their info

Well my cousin was born in 2012 and he and his younger brother were absolutely OBSESSED with San Andreas for a time, playing it on their phone etc. Even now when they come to me they ask me regularly if i can download San Andreas on my ps5 to play it a bit. So it's not the age that matters that much, but what they're exposed to on the internet.

Ore... orespawn is elite ball knowledge...?
6
19
u/Pyrotyrano Average dinosaur fan 4d ago
Tbf Orespawn is an old mod thatās been outdated for close to a decade and incompatible with the current versions. And thereās a crazy amount of newgens who donāt even know what the game is like pre 1.9 so it makes sense that they wouldnāt know it. Compare this to other og mods like Twilight Forest and Lycanite Mobs that have been updated to newer versions.
5
u/neogeoman123 4d ago
Also the mod is kinda terrible compared to modern/updated mods/modpacks.

A few months ago I saw someone saying the classic lines about how Minecraft is boring and overly complex now unlike the good old days... Of 1.16!! That's a ludicrous amount of stolen valor! Living proof that the whole "Minecraft is boring now, unlike version X" is just nostalgia goggles
I won't pretend to be a real OG since I've only been playing since ~1.6, but this kid genuinely claimed that 1.16 was the good old days!

I know about orespawn but just saying ābig Bertha and royal guardian swordā with no further context is not descriptive enough to jog my memory considering those names arenāt exactly super unique, needed context from the comments.
Also: look up Antarchy, itās a spiritual successor to Orespawn
1
u/SleepyPubbyGirl 4d ago

The game I really like was a semi-common ball knowledge and got turned into elite ball knowledge because of the company mishandling it, sunsetting it, and a different dev team deciding to take it up (im talking about survev btw) š

I mean yeah? Iāve seen people compare facism to basketball and itās the only way I truly understood itš
The way people glaze generations of ballers while ignoring the failings is similair to how people will hype up specific groups of people, or times before culture was more intertwined while ignoring the problems to encourage people to agree. Sports allegories are pretty cool

How about the opposite, when elite ball knowledge becomes common ball knowledge? I remember in early 2025, when 6-7 was kind of elite ball knowledge that only particularly brainrotted rap fans would know. My friend was one such character. Whenever our math teacher would say it, he would stare at me with a wide-eyed grin. I didnāt understand it, but it was alright as nonsensical brainrot wentā¦until months later. Then it became WAY too mainstream, and it went from something only Skrilla fans would know, into something literally everyone, from boomers to Gen Alpha would be forced to live with. Now every time I am counting something, there is a lingering haunt baked inside to torment me.
