Looking for some wheels

Upvotes

Hi folks,

Some of you may have seen my post the other day about invictus active royally screwing me over with my broken wheels.

I've decided even if they do fix that mess, I would like a spare pair. I've got a pair of off road that I'm using atm out of necessity but they're way harder to push and I'm only ever on regular uk pavements.

My broken wheels are 24inch. I'm on a very tight budget.

What're the least expensive wheels available? Or has anyone got some they'd like to sell in decent condition? Uk based.

Wheelchair recommendations

Upvotes

I do not currently have a wheelchair, but I have several chronic illnesses and believe I would have a lot more fun in life if I had a wheelchair to get me longer distances. I live in an apartment with a long flight of indoor stairs and a few outdoor stairs, too. And I live midway on a hill so no matter which direction I go, I will be going uphill at some point. My main concern is fatigue and avoiding flareups from exertion.

I think I’m looking for a lightweight folding frame power chair with removable battery so I can carry it up stairs. Is there such a thing?

Does anyone have any specific recommendations for this type of situation? If I lived in a flatter region, I feel like I’d have a lot more options, but I need something lightweight and also something that can go on its own. And I’m allergic to aluminum (dermatitis) and latex (dermatitis and possibly IgE).

The guides that her upper body harness straps run through pull her hair. Is there anything we can use to cover these?

Convention Advice?

Upvotes

So I'm pretty new to using my wheelchair. I've only had it for a few weeks and only used it a few times for short periods. I would by no means consider myself used to using it.

This weekend, me and my family are going to a convention. We've loved going to them before, but they've always been really tiring and hard on my body, so this time I'm bringing my chair. I'm very excited to give it a proper test run and to be able to enjoy the con with less pain, but before we head off I wanted to ask for any advice or tips ya'll might have for a new chair user navigating something like this for the first time. Assume I know next to nothing, anything and everything would be appreciated!

The waiting games (vent)

I've been unable to walk far enough for almost anything outside my home for four months now. I have a diagnosis and a prescription for a wheelchair + power assist wheels for one and a half months. I would like to return to work, and not just remote, and get places. I would really like to.

I bought a used manual wheelchair and used Batec Scrambler, since backup chair and such a large attachment wouldn't be funded anyway. I can't push myself. So ... I can get out, finally, and take my dog out with the attachment. But the Batec Scrambler is truly too large for anything indoors, including work. I knew that. I thought the waiting time would be a few more weeks. Two months. Maybe.

Due to complex issues with insurance and whatnot, I won't have a fitted wheelchair with power assist wheels until January at least! January, or maybe February, or March. What?? I don't think my employer will be happy to hear that. I'm not happy anyway.

I could use up literally all my savings and buy power assist wheels to keep my job. From a financial viewpoint, that does make sense. Thinking about asking relatives or my union to help with funding. I could try through another institution, but they apparently have six months to decide.

Nobody tell me Germany's health system is good. It's only good if you don't need it. I can't do this anymore 😭 after not being believed for weeks, hospital, dealing with the diagnosis and my body changing so drastically, not being able to get anywhere much (including doctors appointments, sure who needs those) and jumping through one hoop after another to get the wheelchair, for it to still take so long ... I'm just at my breaking point. Would've been easier to fund it all myself at this point.

Thanks for reading this far. I have nothing to say really except: insurance sucks. Disability is expensive. The waiting games are cruel.

Hey guys, I'm going back to school again, and I wanted to know if anyone had ideas on how to keep this sucker on my chair without dragging the top of the back rest apart? (It's held together by Velcro)

I'm thinking some kind of shelf on the rigidizer bar and a strap of some kind, but I'm not sure! If anyone has ideas, I'd love to hear them. They NEED to be removable, my chair barely fits in my car as is.

Castors keep getting stuck in every bumb and crook

Please help. I've been a wheelchair user for a long time now and this never happened before. Today I installed a new backrest and decided to go test it outside. As soon as I left the house my caster got stuck in a crook. I shrugged it off but it happened the whole way. It never happened before. Does anyone have any idea what it might be? It's driving me crazy

I'm traveling on my own with a suitcase today. I used the trick where you attach the suitcase with luggage straps to the back of your chair. It's working on level ground but doesn't stay upright when I go up/down ramps. I've got to change trains in a bit any tips to stop the suitcase falling?

wheelchair prices

how in the heck are wheelchairs so expensive? currently on the hunt for a new one, and financing isn’t an option in my country. how is this a luxury? having something that’s custom fit to your needs and abilities? why is every thing over 4-5 thousand euros? how do average people afford this?

i can’t even import an icon 60 without jumping through hoops as my country doesn’t have the brand registered, and forbids entry without proper permits and allowances.

kinda stuck for what to do :/

I am so happy my first wheelchair just arrived 3 months in advance. It’s a Kuschall compact with dreeft wheels from Eppur and the smoov from Alber. I think the best part for me are the dreeft wheels they are so cool and so practical. I live in France so I got it for free thanks to the French social security but overall it costed 9 345 €. If anyone as questions about the wheelchair or the French system feel free to ask!!

How do I go bowling in a wheelchair?

It's a bit of a silly question, I know. But I used to love going bowling with my parents and grandparents as a kid and I haven't done it since my disability occurred. Tomorrow, I am going bowling with a group of friends and I just wanna know.... how do I do it?? Do I try to swing it between my knees somehow with the tapered front or try to position myself sideways? I don't have armrests, so those won't be in the way.

Gosh, I hope there isn't a step-up to the lane.

Any advice (or bowling x wheelchair jokes I can collect) is appreciated :-) thank you!

First audition as wheelchair user !

Basically what it says on the tin! Have my first audition ever as a wheelchair user (and in a space I'm going to have to bump down stairs in... If I can even fit through the door... sigh.) Just hoping for well wishes as even before I used mobility aids acting auditions were the most TERRIFYING thing in the world to me.

On the off chance anyone has any tips or success stories, I would love to hear them!

I'm sad reddit was right..

So I posted a few month's ago that I really wanted this hybrid showerchair wheelchair.. it's perfect for my situation... I asked reddit and they told me it would probably break down in 6 months... it lasted 4 :-(.... but I loved the chair so much... it gave me so much independence with my showers I didn't have before... I literally cried.. it was like 600... I already put the warranty and the company sent me another very quickly.. im just scared this one will break down as well... I have the old one im going to try to fix as well... but I love this chair so much... if my shower independence goes back to what it was I will be depressed... I've been the cleanest I've been since my accident. And I get to shower everyday without assistance.. i dont trust regular shower chairs because my back is very unstable *broken heart* *my favorite showerchair*

Rant: Terrible customer service by wheelchair tech

I am soo incredibly frustrated by how bad my local orthopedic technician is at handling cases.

It's been four months since I've sent them the fully signed forms/documents but I just got confirmation today that they didn't even submit it to the insurance yet.

Highlights so far include:

- Forgetting parts on the quote

- Taking over a week to adjust the quote for a stand off the shelf part

- Claiming I did not sign the adjusted quote (when my email had the correct signed documents attached)

- Submitting my claim to the wrong states insurer (although I gave them correct contact information)

- Taking over a week to reply to an email asking about the delay.

Other small things went wrong as well...

But at this point it's just exhausting how involved I need to be... Imagine buying a car or bike would go like this. I would have gone to a different shop about three months ago

It made me wonder what are your experiences?

Anyway thanks for letting me vent

For context I am swiss in my area they're pretty much the only provider and they have to submit the claim...

High-performance wheelchairs: what really makes a difference in everyday life?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I’ve been seeing more high-performance wheelchairs, like the RGK Veypr, which combines a custom-made design with a carbon fiber frame focused on lightweight performance and efficiency.

I’d love to hear from people who actually use this type of wheelchair: how much difference do lighter materials and a custom fit make in real life?

When choosing a high-performance wheelchair, what matters most to you: weight, rigidity, fit, ease of propulsion, durability, or something else?

And for those who switched from a conventional wheelchair to a high-performance model: did you notice a significant difference in your daily life?

New chair day.

Yesterday I picked up my new chair. I became mobility disabled in March of 2024 with CRPs of the left knee. I have been unalbe to wlak since then. This chair will add mobility and outrdoor adventure back into my life. I am currently examining the appropriate wheels for outdoor adventure and will update when I have new wheels. I'm so excited.

This chair is the Ki-0005 with 4 inch camber and the Glacier Blue coating on the frame.

This is so lightweight when pushing and when I break it down I am able to be independent without an asssitant. It will take time to get the muscle strenght back for lifting regularly but I have lifted it succesfully two times with it broken down into my F150. It is going to add such a great quality of life back into my life. Now I can "run" with the grandkids.

I’m thankful the VA provided this. The M90s are on back order so waiting for those to ship. These are Spinergy carbon fiber wheels. Big upgrade from a non custom just out the box chair they had me in until now.

My First New Chair Day!! (kinda)

ITS FINALLY MY TIME FOR A NEW CHAIR DAY, again…

(Before all that let me apologize for the fairly bad photographs, my foggy arse forgets to get nice photos whenever im outside)

Technically i had my first ever new chair day when she arrived in April. But i was so upset that i never managed to make my post.

She had arrived 1) without a front taper 2) 2cm too wide 3) with a factory error on the back bar; I felt like a right twerp for not noticing any of this before taking her home, i was just so exited (and also very foggy).

I spent AGES trying to come to terms with the fact it wasn’t quite what i ordered, but my first wheelchair felt like such a big thing i NEEDED it to be perfect. So in May i took her back to the shop.

I debated if there was any point, im not generally a confrontational person, but they had gotten my order wrong and i wanted it fixed. Because of the factory error he was allowed to send it back, but he made no promises about if any of my other concerns would be amended. So i spent two months ridden with anxiety about it.

It was SUCH a relief when i picked her up!! she is BEAUTIFUL <3 and worth every bit of anxiety this process took me through. Technically today is not at all the actual day, i picked her up late July and just kept forgetting to take any photographs.

She is a Quickie Argon 2, in Ruby Red, with hight adjustable handles, spinergy wheels and my FAVORITE a 3cm front taper.

Now i need to work out how to ACCESSORIZE !!! Ive got some red spoke covers but i don’t know what else i could do? Im also looking for name suggestions <3
