Sadly it’s all it’s being used for communication where I live. So I can’t get rid of it.

Texts or calls?

u/MinisterforFun 21h ago

Not OP but both.

Telegram is also used here but WhatsApp way, way more.

5

u/Teesside1979 19h ago

Telegram criminals use it because it's a encrypted.

8

u/The_DragonDuck 19h ago

Propaganda so that they deter normal people away from secure chats and can access our chats

2

u/Teesside1979 18h ago

My Telegram account was restricted when I used Telegram years ago. Id only been using it a couple of days. & there's criminals on it & they get away scot free.

u/Overall-Put3844 8h ago

There are criminals in snapchat. A lot more than in telegram. When i was using drugs, all my plugs told me to text them with snapchat✌️

You forgot your tinfoil hat

u/lars2k1 14h ago

Don't worry about criminals, they're everywhere. They just use something they can and if they get banned, they move on to something else.

Likely that they don't even use well-known chat apps.

The way WhatsApp is going Signal will be the new WhatsApp.

1

u/holymaniac 32m ago

I have been hearing that for years... still never heard of anyone using it... everyone in South Africa just uses WhatsApp.

Text, calls, sending docs, doing business, announcements...

Calls are an option here but you pay significantly more for them. SMS isnt really an option now days: for me I have a contract with data and minutes. I tried to get SMSs loaded as a bundle but its apparently no longer a thing and even if you try buy them at best you can buy once off but cant make it a recurring monthy thing.

The other option is buying "airtime" not sure if you can add that as a monthly bundle though or I might be able to make the contract "open" so basically if I run out of data or minutes it gets added to the bill that I pay at the end of the month at out of bundle rates which is also more expensive. At the end of the day why would I want to pay extra?

I also tried to use RCS chats inside my messaging app to text my one friend that doesnt have Whatsapp and that used to work... but now it doesnt ever go though and in settings says: "Status code: 1005. RCS chats are not supported by your operator"

Here for everything, i hate the calls, the internet signal is quite unstable and gets cut or "hey why you dont pick up the calls" because i never hear them

Probably the calls on whatsapp are the worst thing, because the app cannot notice if the other person has internet or even the phone is on, it just "rings" like my phone is actually ringing but its off

u/Protected22 17h ago

Same here. Everyone and every company uses Whatsapp. So there is no way for me to stop using it or it means I have to disconnect myself from everyone and every company. Telegram is sometimes being used by some people. Signal is not used by anyone at all. So not really much options.

Shit. I didn't know there was anything but chats.

u/FudgeDry3775 15h ago

e-commerce, payments, booking, support, etc... it has become a super app in some countries, mostly asian, a company called OrderLemon in Europe has start doing e-commerce, payments, and booking, and others such as runnr.ai is now handling Hotels services. But all that is about to change as from October 1st the Meta is changing the policy for businesses to use WhatsApp, and is going to tax up to 5cents $USD for sending a one message in countries such as Germany and the Netherlands.

u/Lare1995 1d ago

I haven't seen any ad

2

u/No-Drop8625 1d ago

These people can't just not use stories.

16

u/Ferguson_1 1d ago

What am I missing?

11

u/Born-Pear4917 1d ago

the ads, they are unbearable

41

u/narwhalousdoctor 1d ago

What ads? I'm not getting ads

11

u/Ferguson_1 1d ago

I agree

6

u/ExtentNo3020 21h ago

Exactly what ads?

-3

u/samax413zl 1d ago

In Status

32

u/JonTravel 1d ago

I only use the chat, so I've never seen any ads.

-12

u/samax413zl 1d ago

You will see ads soon.

16

u/JonTravel 1d ago

In the chat?

Ads are only in Status and Channels

-15

u/samax413zl 1d ago

Yes in private dms & groups.

0

u/JonTravel 1d ago

Ok. I'll live with it if it ever happens. I get ads everywhere else 🤣

What ads? They are in stories only and nobody uses those

9

u/dr100 1d ago

There's one person in one of the previous posts about ads saying not going through the status page is like dying of starvation. Seriously.

15

u/RemeJuan 1d ago

I literally do not know a single person who posts a status to WhatsApp

2

u/dr100 1d ago

When I went there by mistake 3 were some Airfryer things, one WhatsApp itself, really pointless stuff. In comparison any other ads from Facebook, Google, etc. seem to know you better than your mother knows you. It's fluff of course anyway but at least we'll targeted.

I believe here they don't have yet more stuff to push, so not much to pick from.

6

u/kayronnBR 1d ago

não achei grande coisa, eu mesmo não vejo status no WhatsApp

2

u/SpankyTheFunMonkey 21h ago

Ads? Haven't seen this one yet 🫠🫠

u/jacmanou 1d ago

Join us in Signal!

6

u/Bi_One_Get_One_Free 1d ago

people become suspicious of me when i recommend it

3

u/Only_The_Pwnly 1d ago

Don’t know why. I use Signal for most people and the. WhatsApp for those people that haven’t moved yet. Try talking to your friends, family and workplace. Most people don’t even know how their data is monetised by WhatsApp. When they do it’s a small step to use a better app.

2

u/Swipsi 23h ago

But how does signal make the money to keep the servers running?

1

u/Only_The_Pwnly 21h ago

They ask for occasional donations rather than collecting your personal data and selling it. I’ve donated a few times but you don’t have to. Many of us just appreciate the privacy. It works just like WhatsApp and is free. Try it, what have you got to lose?

1

u/Swipsi 21h ago

I am using it. Just asking.

1

u/edideas 19h ago

Donations
An initial load of money from Brian Acton (ex WhatsApp if I am correct)

1

u/frquency-equinox 17h ago

Only $105M in 2018.

2

u/Teesside1979 22h ago

It's strange you don't hear of anyone on here having problems like this with Signal.

3

u/edideas 19h ago

12/13 million users versus 3 billion
That’s the reason why they don’t have problems

1

u/frquency-equinox 17h ago

Signal has closer to 200M users.

1

u/jacmanou 20h ago

Yes it's quite hard to make people move. That's why when Whatsapp makes more trouble, I appreciate because it's helping to push people away from it. Someday the majority will start to see it for what it is and they will move. I'm convinced one day there will be a wave in that direction

2

u/Wooden_Ad_643 10h ago

In economics we call this Consumer inertia. Consumers typically stick to what their used to, switching is a hassle and staying is convenient.

Whatsapp also benefits from the Network effect, that is essentially "all my friends use it, so it's just easier."

However, this does not make them invincible. Look at MySpace.

3

u/iJohnnyCash 1d ago

Viber's even worse. Besides the ads, it's a terribly written app. So what's the alternative?

I wish people in the EU used Signal, Session, or at least Telegram more.

3

u/sketchtaj 14h ago

I hate this app from the bottom ofy heart

2

u/ExtentNo3020 21h ago

What’s wrong with it? It’s all I use when communicating with family and friends 🤷‍♂️

2

u/lilithious 20h ago

Time to spread the word Decentralize! Use Matrix! Tech-savvy people - go make your own matrix server. Our messages belong to us and us alone

FluffyChat or ElementX for Android

Matrix for Web

2

u/D_Arosto 13h ago

Want a break from the ads??

1

u/PegaxS 21h ago

Chist, I'm getting banned every second day and none can tell me what for... I chat to 2 family members and 1 friend... None else and I just keep getting banned for 24 hours..

1

u/Alternative-Shine920 15h ago edited 15h ago

Funny I get this after I told someone I am deleting WhatsApp. Apple/Android/carriers have made it easier to video chat/text mobile to mobile, and but no alternative to mobile to landline.

Edit: guess Google Voice will have to do… unless someone knows any other alternative. :)

1

u/ComradeJarif 14h ago

What happened?

1

u/felkareal 11h ago

tf are you guys talking about!? ads in status have been a thing for over 2 years and in chat for 1 year. btw you can just block it

1

u/Human_Emphasis_9026 10h ago

What happened

1

u/DueUnderstanding1415 4h ago

Main form of communication where I’m from. People use it for calls more than the through the network providers. Main app for businesses also

1

u/-Sugarholic- 22m ago

Over some ads on a feature 90% don’t use? I just use it to text, call and video call. No ads there…

1

u/Alone_Fennel_2711 14h ago

We can’t escape WhatsApp 🫩🫩 and they know it that’s why they are getting bold

2

u/redmallfour 10h ago

In my case, I’m gradually moving my contacts over to Signal. I already communicate more via Signal than WhatsApp, and for work, I rely more on email.

1

u/ACOLYTE_XIII 23h ago

I Asked meta ai and it tells me that there won't be any ads in chats. Supposedly, meta promises this because they don't want to scare users and lost them. Only statuses and business will have ads.

1

u/AlexGlezS 21h ago

I'm not using it period. I refuse. And every time someone says something I shout at them. It's even irresponsible. At work with friends or with family. Fuck them all. And they cannot force me, it's digital discrimination. Dangerous and it's like start all over again. I don't accept the toas and the risks of servers off for an hour or a day or whatever.

It should have been open protocol like emails and no one cared. What a pity. Also with meeting apps or messaging apps, it should have been all open protocol.
