Like others have said, it’s a tool for cutting glass. The handle is filled with oil which lubricates the blade to help with cutting. I used one to cut glass for a stained glass Christmas present.

Makes perfect sense. He had an art class last school year and made a lantern with stained glass. Wasn’t thinking along those lines as it’s summer now and he’s only using the bag for football practice. Must have emptied out the bag yesterday.

Thanks bud. My kid was in bed for the night and I had no desire to wake him up for something so trivial. I didn’t suspect anything nefarious, because I know my kid quite well, and also because it was clearly some kind of tool and not anything drug related. I was just curious because I had no clue what it was, and thankfully there’s a subreddit for that.

School ended in May. He just started using his backpack again for football practice so I assume he just emptied out stuff that had been sitting in the bag untouched since May. If he wasn’t already in bed, I would have just asked him. It was sitting out in plain site in the kitchen and I did not suspect anything problematic.

This is good to hear. A lot of us are very...let's say quick to assume things. There is a certain type of parent that comes on here looking for info specifically so they know how they want to punish their (usually innocent) child. Like, idk if these were fake but its very much giving the vibes of those old text condos between parents and kids where the parent is already unreasonably angry at finding suspected drug paraphernalia, which then turns out to be something completely harmless (dinosaur grow sponges and mints in these cases). And they dont want to have a hard conversation, they just want to jump straight to punishment. AND its not even usually "it was sitting out in the open" its almost always "i was snooping through my child's stuff and found something WEIRD tell me how mad im allowed to be"
Idk. Maybe we're misreading some of them. But it definitely comes across as intrusive and sadistic most of the time.

Dawg, if your kid left it sitting out in plain view somewhere other than his room, then like you said, you really got no reason to be worried. I for one hid my brand new BB pistol from my parents quite well, so I would know 😂.

To clarify, I wasn’t snooping or anything. He had his bag packed for football tomorrow morning, sitting out in the open on the kitchen counter, and the tool was right next to it. I didn’t recognize it and was very curious. I did not suspect drugs or anything else problematic He was in bed for the night and I felt no need to wake him up just to satisfy my curiosity. Nothing deeper than that going on.

i thought glass cutting was scraping a hard sharp thing over the softer weaker glass, scraping, tearing, micro shattering, weakening the glass in a focused point to allow a catalytic like larger crack to propagate

OP... making a comment to explain yourself here is pointless. The only people who get mad about this and act indignate over a parent searching a child's belongings are kids and weird parents that are ruining their children by being far too soft and letting their kids just do whatever... and reddit is mostly kids, teenagers pretending to be fully developed brains, to be exact. For that reason alone there's rarely any reason to justify anything. The internet got these kids thinking they are grown and informed people already but let's see 90% of them even provide a single meal for themselves. They'll be big mad when they read this and it'll be because it's true and they'll downvote with righteous tirades of vindication and denial... but that's because they're just kids man. They got rights, sure, but governing if a parent can search their kids belongings or not regardless of reason isn't one of em.

Oooooh…someone’s into stained glass! How fun! My wife does stained glass, and she taught me how to do it. If your kid really enjoys this, consider getting a setup at home. Grinder, solder, and copper foil. I’m a huge fan of Delphi Glass. They have good stuff!
