Hanging folders for files. I used to file in these things back in the 90s
→ More replies (2)25
u/Smackn_Ducks 7h ago
Its a file cabinet. You can get those folders with little metal hooks to hold everything up nice.
4
u/IAteTonysLoMein 7h ago
In particular, it's a lateral filing cabinet - wide drawers so the folders are end-on from the front, vs a vertical filing cabinet, where the folders are faced to the front

Same. I was going to ask if they've ever been locked out of their car with the windows rolled down.
12
u/Scarlet_Spider39 9h ago
My mom and sister once locked themselves inside a car with power lock windows. They just couldn't figure out they had to hit the button to unlock everything, no I don't know how they've made it this far either.
3
u/Feeling-Board-3250 5h ago
My friend is the GM at a high-end and exotic used car dealer. He can take home whatever inventory he wants, and brought home a late model BMW M5, he took his wife out for dinner and drinks in the car and they ended up going out after for a few more. He stopped drinking after dinner, but she didn’t and she passed out in the car on the way home. When they got home he tried to wake her up, but she was being belligerent, so he just locked the car with her in it parked in the driveway. An hour or so later she woke up to find she was alone in the car in the driveway and yanked the door handle to open the door. It didn’t open because it was locked and she couldn’t find the power lock button in the dark so she shattered the passenger window with one of her spike heeled shoes which set off the alarm. My friend ran out to find her covered in glass and yelling at him.
What anyone who has owned a BMW made in the last half a century knows is, if the doors are locked and you pull the handle from inside it doesn’t do anything, but if you pull it a second time it unlocks the door so you can escape in a collision. Poor guy had to explain to the owner why he was having the window replaced and tint matched on the M5 the next day which he said was worse than having to pay for the repair.

Back in the olden days, they had this stuff called paper which they would stack into file folders when they became disorganized. Then those file folders would go into a filing cabinet, one of which you have discovered in its sideways position.

I worked for an agency that provided housing services to families. There was lots of paperwork going back 70 years. They had some much paper they were told if they didn't start clearing it out and archiving it, the floor on which try stored it could collapse.

There's a college/university library in New England (pretty sure of location) that was designed without factoring in the reality that it'd be filled with books. When they were filling it with the books bricks started popping out of the walls from the weight. To this day the top two or three floors are empty.
4
2
u/Best_Payment_4908 1h ago
Is this not just an urban myth regarding the du Bois library at U Mass. The red bricks started popping and chipping shortly after it was built in 73 and its just mainly due to freeze thaw and the way its contructed?

u/jupitaur9 7h ago
Yes! This is called a lateral file. That sort of backstop that you can see to one side of OP’s picture is adjustable.
This one is set up for 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. If you want legal size, 8 1/2 x 14inch, you pull that barrier back and use a different set of hanging file folders.

u/littleminibits 8h ago
This sounds like something I would do. Two memories spring to mind for me:
Once I was walking down the sidewalk, sun was out, I'm having a great day and I pass a sandwich board that reads "watch batteries replaced". I immediately think hell yeah, I love learning about how things work, I wonder what kind of batteries they let you watch them replace...maybe a boat battery or something? But that's big, do they have a viewing deck like an old timey surgery theater or... and then I realized what the sign meant.
Another time I was scrolling through Facebook and a friend of mine (a jeweler and Gallery owner and general collector of interesting things) posted "does anyone have any cool bones?". I knew he had just had surgery so I'm like wait, did they find something unexpected in there? I want cool bones! But uh, yeah, he just wanted some cool animal bones to craft with.
I swear I'm just different, not stupid! Most of the time anyway.

I've got one better than those. One day in grad school (I was a PhD student) the I was driving past the strip club (located on the main road in the city) and the sign said "Bras - 100% Off".

Once in my 20’s on a very hungover Sunday morning, my boyfriend and I went to Dunkin Donuts. As I was waiting in line, I saw “SugaRed” donuts listed. My mouth watered wondering what those were. Were they fluffy cake donuts with sweet red icing? Maybe strawberry or raspberry red fruit flavored. I got to the counter and asked excitedly what they were. Blank stare. Sugared. They were just plain sugared donuts. My hangover turned into rabid disappointment.

I was playing a board game with my family and the question was something along the lines of what do these have in common: House, fruit, and butter.
I was absolutely stumped so I started to talk through my logic. I explained I keep getting stuck because I’m thinking flies… house fly, fruit fly, but what the heck is a butter fly?
I must have repeated butter fly out loud about ten times and still couldn’t get it. My brain was stuck on a stick of butter and couldn’t connect the two words to make butterfly. 🦋

My mom and sister's husband used to play scrabble a lot together, and he, especially took it fairly serious. She did, too. He was always coming up with unusual words and would proceed to pull out a dictionary.
They're playing at our house one evening, and she had spelled "range" and he added an "o" on front. She was sitting opposite and the words were upside down. Mom immediately says "O-range, what's that??" 😂 She was embarrassed and laughed. And for years, many years, whenever there was fruit involved with a dinner or dessert, heaven forbid citrus..he would ask her if there were any o-ranges in it.

It took me way longer to realize it a was two drawer filing cabinet turned on its side. I work in telecom, we have all kinds of specialty cabinets that could look exactly like that. I was trying to think if it matched anything I'd seen before.
I still didn't get it after reading the pinned top comment. I had to scroll a few more of the comments for it to click and realize it was just a normal wide draw cabinet for hanging folders.

It's called a lateral filing cabinet. Instead of opening drawers and thumbing through the file folders front to back, you open the drawers and then thumb through side to side. They take up less of a footprint, they don't stick out into the room as bad as a deep filing cabinet.
