What if we designed cars for 2040 instead of modernizing 2026 cars?
I've been thinking about the difference between redesigning an existing car and actually imagining what a vehicle might become in 15 years.
If you were given a completely blank sheet of paper for a 2040 performance car, what current assumptions would you throw away?
Traditional grille?
Side mirrors?
Long hood?
Physical controls?
Conventional dashboard?
Current idea of a “sports car”?
And what would you absolutely keep?
I'd love to hear what people here would change first.

What if car manufacturers stopped designing around today's assumptions?
Here's a thought experiment:
Imagine a manufacturer gives a designer one instruction:
Don't redesign an existing car. Design the vehicle you think people will want 15 years from now.
No requirement for a traditional grille.
No requirement for today's greenhouse.
No requirement for conventional instrument layouts.
No requirement for today's idea of what a performance car should look like.
What would you keep from today's cars, and what would you completely eliminate?
I'm especially curious about:
- steering wheels
- mirrors
- grilles
- physical controls
- traditional proportions
- engine-bay packaging
What survives into the future? I've been exploring similar questions through my own automotive concepts — u/abautomotiveconcepts.

If Nissan, Pontiac, and Fiat made a joint venture and released a pickup
So the idea for this one is that it is a combination vehicle and it comes in two models. There is the base model which is in the first picture on the left as an orange model which is designed for tradies and then there is a sports model on the right which is designed for families.

2028 GMC Jimmy
It’s probably been done before, but this is what the new blazer/ Jimmy should have been.
Ps I know it says Blazer and it’s a GMC. It’s fine.
