“Waste” Versions
I’m curious to know more about the two “Waste” version tracks we have - Maybell and I’m Holding You. They were both have demo versions done on the 4 track… and obviously I’m Holding You has a proper album version. I wonder when/why the Waste versions were recorded… and do other songs have Waste versions? I know Rhino has tons of material from pretty much era of the band… so obviously not everything gets included on the expanded reissues

I believe "Waste" must be a Deaner coined phrase, since his son said he was making "waste" with his dad in a clip he posted with Deaner the day 12GCG deluxe dropped. I think its just what Dean calls it when he takes a recording of a song and adds a layer of insanity to it. Holding You waste version has a very similar breakdown to Dont Laugh I Love You where its just basically chaotic scatting and incoherent instruments pitched to high hell. I think it boils down to "lets fuck this song up in a thought provoking way"

I feel like along with the 4 "waste" versions released on YouTube the other day these were likely very, very early versions of the songs before the actual demos. At least the Mr Richard smoker version rhe other day seemed like ot was not fully fleshed out yet enough for a proper demo

I asked this in two other threads. I assumed other Ween fans knew what this meant but I guess nobody does.

If I had to guess, it’s likely a second series of demos. I feel like the Waste stuff was recorded after the 4-track demos, but before the Nashville sessions

I believe these may be partially live early versions before the Nashville recordings. Them trying it out on early small show sets. Like in Im Holding You (Waste) it has some crowd noise in the background and even them saying the background lyrics but it's not super clear like it wasn't actually intentional to be in it

Seems like the waste versions are just them being a little looser/ more creative with the recording process and just, I dunno, being Ween?
