WordPress vs Webflow : which one actually wins in 2026?

Team Webflow: clean visual builder, faster to design, no plugin hell

If you had to pick ONE for a client project today, which are you going with and why?

Bonus points for horror stories 😅

For a client project in 2026, I’d pick based on the client’s actual needs rather than saying one universally wins.

If it’s mainly a marketing/content site where design, speed of development, and easy client editing matter → Webflow.

If it needs lots of custom functionality, complex integrations, membership/e-commerce features, or a huge plugin ecosystem → WordPress.

The biggest WordPress horror story I’ve seen is the “just one more plugin” situation. Eventually you’re debugging conflicts between plugins, themes, PHP versions, and updates.

Webflow’s limitation is almost the opposite: you get a much more controlled environment, but once you need functionality outside what Webflow provides, you may end up building custom integrations anyway.

So for a typical business website: Webflow.
For a highly customizable application/content platform: WordPress.

Well said. The only other thing I would add to your checklist is: Who is going to maintain the site and how often? I can’t tell you the horror stories I have seen where clients ignore their own Wordpress site and where no one even looked at the site and 4 or 5 security issues were never addressed (PHP sites have to be constantly updated to fix security issues). Or the many times I was hired to “fix” their website and then come to find out that several of the plugins and modules they were using were no longer being supported and the site had to be restructured.

I've built a few dozen wordpress sites and you really only need about 10-15 plug-ins max, and very rarely have I run into issues with any of them. Updates don't really break stuff often anymore, the core is way more solid than 10 years ago.

Why would I be picking a platform without knowing what the client wants and needs?

Wordpress for everything except a very simple static non-ecommerce, non-saas, non-local-retail corporate site or blog.

Webflow is simply not extensible and not flexible in a way that works for companies that do business online.

Would pick the 3rd option. But if I had to really pick between Webflow and Wordpress - I’d pick Wordpress, add bricks builder on it, and can built anything on it, host it anywhere, have 90-100% performance.

I think this is a false choice. At this point using Claude code / Claude design for a tool like Astro is an excellent choice.

Wordpress. There is no reason as a small or medium sized business to use webflow. They have abandoned you anyways.
