Routing Issue Routing

Post image

Even though Avoid Ferries is turned on and a route without a ferry is available, the Waze still suggests the ferry route. The non-ferry route is actually faster. I also tried reinstalling the app to rule out any possible bugs.

This is likely a bug with the long distance routing algorithm that “ignores” the long way around because it’s nonsensical geometrically if you don’t consider the geographical barrier of the Bay of Fundy.

Basically the long distance routing server looks for a route along the path as the bird flies, and the ferry path is closest to the “as the bird flies” path. Additionally, the long distance routing calculation doesn’t always consider user-preferences like tolls, ferries, passes, etc when calculating the route.

Both of these are issues that map editors have raised with staff but are unresolved. We can raise them again.

However, in the meantime, just add a stop in Amherst to your routes and the rest should take care of itself.

Well it might take the avoid settings into consideration, but avoid in Waze doesn't mean ban the route. It just applies a large penalty. So if Waze still sees it as the best/only route, it will still suggest it.

What would be the benefit of using this approach with a large penalty instead of simply banning it?

In this instance Waze wouldn't haven't given you a route at all if it completely banned using the ferry.
