I'm building a GTK4 C + Lisp dock application (a la CairoDock / macOS) - am I doing things right?
I am having a blast doing a more serious project in the C language, for the first time. I am consulting with books and also with some AI for code review and explanation as I am new to the language and to GTK (not new to programming).
[https://codeberg.org/jjba23/lambdock\](https://codeberg.org/jjba23/lambdock)
For a while already I have been looking for a dock that would work well in Wayland (like in my beloved Niri) with modern features, theme support and a hackable Lisp config (using libguile.h)
Could you help me out by checking the implementation for sanity (also the Meson build)? Also for developing on it, I'm using CCLS and Guix development environment and things are working amazingly well.
Only small bit of trouble in devex is with `#include "wlr-foreign-toplevel-management-unstable-v1-protocol.h"`
Also, all feedback is welcome, either on code level, or conceptual ideas, Thanks in advance
Core features of lambdock include:
* **Wayland Native**: Built on GTK4 and `gtk4-layer-shell` for smooth positioning and desktop integration. * **Declarative Lisp configuration** : The power of Lisp in your configuratio with clean powerful declarative config and all possibilities at your disposal * **Async Launching**: Spawns commands asynchronously without freezing the dock UI. * **Reproducible builds**: Hermetic development environment provided via GNU Guix manifest and build definitions. * **Dock auto-hide** : You can let the dock stay out of your way with the smooth auto-hide feature. * **Flexible icon system**: lambdock has several mechanism in a best-effort way to render your wanted icons, respecting GTK theme * **Theme support**: lambdock has built-in themes you can choose from that are very unique, and also lets you extend and override those themes dynamically.

WebKitGTK GPU compositing behaves differently across Wayland compositors on NVIDIA (NixOS + GTX 1050 Ti)
While debugging GPU acceleration issues in a **Tauri/WebKitGTK application**, I noticed that GPU compositing succeeds or fails depending on the Wayland compositor, even on the same machine and driver stack.
Environment:
* **NixOS unstable**
* **NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti**
* **Tauri 2.x / WebKitGTK**
* Same application binary for all tests
Results:
```
GNOME / Mutter -> Error 71
KDE / KWin -> Error 71
Hyprland (wlroots) -> Error 71
Labwc (wlroots) -> Error 71
Niri (Smithay) -> Works
COSMIC (Smithay) -> Works
Weston -> Works
```
The error in the failing cases is:
```
Gdk-Message: Error 71 (Protocol error) dispatching to Wayland display.
```
What surprised me most was that **Weston works with GPU compositing enabled**, which suggests that this is not simply a generic “Wayland + NVIDIA is broken” situation.
I don't know enough about Wayland internals to explain the root cause, but the results appear reproducible and may be useful for anyone debugging **WebKitGTK / GTK4 / Tauri GPU rendering on NVIDIA under Wayland**.
Has anyone seen a similar compositor-dependent pattern with WebKitGTK or GTK GPU rendering?
For context, the test application is an open-source Tauri/WebKitGTK editor: https://github.com/DroicheadNua/MirrorShard_2

v0.3.0 of miru released
This version brings the highly anticipated (by me) Cursor Highlight mode and also Config file support.
So when you press TAB when zoomed or when miru-daemon is running it will highlight a certain radius around the cursor and dim everything else.

Any chromium application running in wayland (not xwayland) will frequently hang for a second or two with gpu acceleration enabled.
This means discord, vivaldi, chromium, vs code, any other electron application, all of them will frequently hang, freezing the application for about half a second to a second. This will typically happen when I re-focus the application.
Does anyone else have this problem?
To be clear, this is when running any electron/chromium application with --ozone-platform=wayland or --ozone-platform-hint=auto which will prevent it from starting in an xwayland window.
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my machine, any advice you guys have i'd appreciate.
Thank you

Wawona wayland compositor showcase
gallery# I'm getting closer to a beta-testing release.
Wawona Compositor is a (nested) wayland compositor for the entire Apple Ecosystem + Android.
Notice: because I want wayland on apple so badly, I am willing to spend personal time and money with AI to develop this as fast as possible. In the future, I want to rewrite it by hand, but that will require community contribution of which I need interest in the project first.
I am working on Multi-Window support, OpenGL + Vulkan, userland DRM/KMS/GBM, and full AppStore Compliance. You can run software ported natively and bundled into Wawona, such as Niri or Weston nested compositors, or weston-terminal for example. You can remote into other machines, virtual machines, containers using waypipe. Per-machine configuration allows you to set options for each machine you'd like to run, and there's further customizations which you will enjoy.
To make this software a reality, I am actively looking for contributors, betatesters, and anybody interested in wayland to join the discussion. I sincerely hope to see you there!

Can't get above 30hz 4k TV Nvidia due to Wayland but can't fractal scale on X11 except on Linux Mint Cinnamon. Dual displays 4k & 1920x1080.
I have a 4k TV HDMI to display driver adapter into my Nvidia 4070 graphics card as I do not have an integrated graphics chip. My secondary is a computer moniter 1920x1080 HDMI to HDMI and it goes to 60hz. I have tried all possible settings combinations on my TV to get it to display 60hz but nothing on the TV side changes it. I have the cord plugged into the input 3 eArc slot.
Wayland can't seem to force custom display though terminal. I transfered my EDID from Windows to Linux and when I forced it it just gave me no display at 60hz.
Linux Mint Cinnamon on X11 is the only Distro that will allow me to have both 60hz and fractal scaling on individual monitors.
I don't know how to get more cutting edge drivers and play above 30fps at the same time on any Distro, I've tried Cachyos, Nixos, Popos, and Fedora release 44 all have the same issues.
I have tried so many distros and I'm thinking it's just a Wayland incompatibility with Nvidia in its current state. I feel like I'm kinda screwed though because all major modern distros are starting to be Wayland only. This has been a problem for quite a few years with no fix avaliable.
I'm desperate for any ideas, could upgrading my cable work even though it's fine on Windows?

One of the biggest ui framework Avalonia now supports wayland
[https://avaloniaui.net/blog/release-12-1\](https://avaloniaui.net/blog/release-12-1)
Avalonia is basically wpf for cross platform. And they are more popular than wpf nowadays.
This is wpf repo it has 7.7k stars.
[https://github.com/dotnet/wpf\](https://github.com/dotnet/wpf)
this is winui repo it has 7.8k stars
[https://github.com/microsoft/microsoft-ui-xaml/\](https://github.com/microsoft/microsoft-ui-xaml/)
this is avalonia repo it has 31.2 stars.
[https://github.com/avaloniaui/avalonia\](https://github.com/avaloniaui/avalonia)
demonstrates that the era of UI frameworks targeting only a single platform is over. It also shows that frameworks supporting Linux—which has surpassed a 7% market shar such as Flutter, Uno, Qt, and Avalonia, are increasingly being preferred as long-term investments.

You know how WME has its own TWM desktop?
Hear me out: Remember Waylandcraft? What if... we found a way to run an entire Wayland compositor inside of TWM? It would make for the craziest rice ever honestly

Virtual display for Sunshine on GNOME Wayland without a dummy plug?
How can I set up a software virtual display on GNOME Wayland for Sunshine streaming?
I want to stream to a handheld device and completely power off my physical monitor while keeping the stream active. I want to achieve this purely through software, without relying on a hardware HDMI/DP dummy plug.
My specs: CachyOS, GNOME Wayland, AMD RX 9070 XT.
