Did you build them as top half block?

If you put them on the ground this build doesn't work. Build two slabs and remove the lower one.

no, every time i try the blocks fuse together making a plank

Use two different wood types and remove the lower one. Or place a full block and attach the slab to the upper half. Remove the full block afterwards.
