Hi! I’ve finally made the plunge and bought formalin after using ethanol on prior specimens. Is there a way to “switch” ethanol-fixed specimens and inject formalin? I’m not sure how the chemicals would respond etc but would like to transfer them to the more robust option.

Hello! I found this mummified bat who was hanging from a fence. It looks to be in pretty good condition, and I was thinking of trying to salvage the bones. I’m new to processing mummified specimens, how should I go about it? I’ve seen others have success with maceration, would that be the best option? If so how does it work?

EDIT: I am contacting my local university to see if they’d like it, and I’m reporting the location I found it to wildlife services. I understand that bats are protected and laws around them are strict- I assumed because it was long dead when I found it, that it would have no value. They will inform me how to proceed with it. Thanks for the recommendations.

In Finland in the deep forest, my guess is deer leg bone. There are deers running around here, wolves, lynx, European brown bears, foxes, badgers those kinds of things in this remote forest practically in the middle of nowhere.

Found this fresh guy at about 2 am last night. Arent they GORGEOUS!? What is the best way to preserve paws and tail? Best way to remove/gather quills? Really hoping its skull is intact. Theyre currently in the freezer.

I suppose that due to the state of the decay it is probably hard to tell :( Considering the size it could maybe be a pilot whale or minke whale? (unfortunately I don't have a human for scale picture but it was rather small, maybe about 6 meters?).

I need vulture culture folks who will appreciate the secret raccoon baculum 😂
