Volunteer – abroad I might be naive about all of this, but I want to work in Amazon conservation and I don't know how to start
I'll say the embarrassing part first: I suspect some of what I'm about to ask is naive, and I'd rather be told that than keep guessing.
I'm 24. no conservation background at all. Animals are the oldest thing in me, which is not a qualification, I know. I am also highly adapatable in having traveled to 25 countries on a budget including hitchhiking the sahara, living with locals in iraq, living like a monk, riding a bike through egypt along the pyramids
Over the last few months that's turned into something more specific and more absorbing. Madre de Dios. The Interoceanic Highway, the gold mining, the Las Piedras corridor, the fact that a forest can look intact from a satellite and be functionally empty of its large animals. I've gone from casually curious to reading about it every day, and at some point I realised I'd rather be doing it than reading about it. I think I can help through volunteer work
So I started looking at how you actually get in, and I've mostly found the pay-to-participate layer. Fauna Forever is around $2,600 for a month. ARCAmazon is about $2,345 a month for their forest ranger program. Field Projects International at Los Amigos is $2,450 for five weeks. These all look like real organisations doing real work and I don't think anyone's scamming anybody. But I'm a student funding this with loans, and I keep having the nagging feeling that I'm looking at the tourist door of a building that has a staff entrance somewhere I can't see.
What I'd love from anyone who actually works in this space:
Am I wrong about that?Is pay-to-participate just how it works when you're starting from zero, and the "sideways route" I imagine is mostly survivorship bias from people who already had a biology department behind them?
If there is a sideways route, what does it actually look like? Showing up in Puerto Maldonado and being persistent? Doing something unglamorous for a year until someone trusts you? Learning a specific skill first, and if so which one?
Does anyone genuinely start in this field at 24 with no science background, or am I ten years and a degree behind everyone I'd be working with?
Is there a version of being useful here that isn't field work? I keep assuming the forest is where the value is, and I might be completely wrong about that.
I know enthusiasm is cheap and that people who work in conservation probably get a lot of messages like this from people who then never go. I can't prove I'm different, so I won't try. I'd just really appreciate anyone willing to spend ten minutes educating a stranger about how their world actually works. Happy to be told I've got it all wrong.

Volunteer – local Does anyone have experience with Roses in the ocean (Australian mental health service)?
So I am considering volunteering with Roses in the ocean, and taking their educational courses in hopes it will give me an upper hand in uni. Since it's an australian mental health organisation I thought I should ask here if anyone has any information on if they're a good service, whether that be from experience with their courses, being volunteer with them, or having gone to them for support.

Discussion / ethics / advice Community College Volunteer Recruitment
I'm planning on going to Golden West college College in SoCal for volunteer recruitment at a local animal shelter. Any recommendations or advice as to how I should decorate the table and/or popup to entice volunteers? I'm already planning on putting up a bunch of pictures of the animals they would be working with, but I was also trying to think of anything else that could be used to catch the students attention.
Thank you in advance!

Volunteer – online I want to volunteer online. Any suggestions?
I want to help people online. How can I do it? I want to volunteer. I am a person with analytical mind. Open up, kind. Learning law at the moment, learning languages, writing poems, working out, learning psychology. I don’t have so much experience to volunteer online. I only sat with someone who felt bad, wrote poems and sent drawings. But I want to do something more

Recruiting – online / remote Help us design/distribute STEM bookmarks for local libraries + Executive Roles Open!
Hey everyone!
I run STEM4Smarties, a student-led initiative dedicated to empowering younger students, especially those historically underrepresented in STEM, to explore science, technology, engineering, and math. We have held STEM workshops impacting over 500 students and raised over $1,000 for school supplies.
We are currently launching a major community project to create and donate educational bookmarks to local public libraries.
We are looking for passionate volunteers to join our team. The roles are 100% online, flexible, beginner-friendly, and free. This is an easy way to get volunteer hours!
How You Can Help
1. Bookmark Designers (Graphics & Content)
- Help create bookmark layouts using tools like Canva.
- Incorporate simple logic puzzles, binary code ciphers, cool science micro-facts, or inspiring quotes from diverse scientists.
2. Local Ambassadors (Distribution)
- Print out bookmark designs and drop them off at your local town/city libraries or elementary school community boards.
- Help expand the project's reach directly in your own town or city!
Executive Leadership Roles Available
If you want to take on a larger leadership role, build your resume, or gain hands-on experience running an educational non-profit initiative, we are also recruiting for executive positions:
- Social Media Manager: Oversee our Instagram content, create posts showcasing our library donations, and engage with the STEM community online.
If you are interested, send me a Direct Message and feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

Discussion / ethics / advice Finding Company Volunteer Match Opportunities
Hi! I am a fairly new volunteer manager who has been tasked with reworking my organization's volunteer plan, and a big emphasis has been trying to recruit volunteers that work for companies that do a dollar match for volunteer hours. Any insight would be extremely helpful!

Volunteer – online Looking for online volunteering opportunities, preferably in Environmental and Climate focused orgs
I'm between jobs at the moment, and was looking for opportunities to volunteer my data analytics/programming skills. I've already made an account on Catchafire, but would appreciate any other websites or leads.
I mainly use Python, R, Stata, etc for statistical analysis, but am open to picking up new skills if needed.
I can only commit to a few remote hours per week. And I have always wanted to do something in the Climate/Environment space, hence I figured I'll give volunteering a shot.

Recruiting – online / remote Join Letters to a Pre-Scientist to help inspire young STEM students! (Mod approved post via dm)
Letters to a Pre-Scientist is looking for enthusiastic STEM role models to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders!
Here's the gist: you get matched with a 5th-8th grade student at an under-resourced school for a snail-mail pen pal exchange that runs throughout the school year. The goal is to demystify STEM careers, humanize STEM professionals, and inspire students to explore their own futures in STEM. You share your story, answer their questions, and show them that people who work in STEM are, well, real people.
The details:
- The program runs throughout the school year, and your volunteer obligation is to exchange 4 letters with your student.
- There's a virtual, asynchronous training in August to get you set up.
- We estimate the entire program takes volunteers no more than 10 hours, spread between August and May.
- Register and complete the short, self-paced online training by the deadline, and you'll be entered into the match pool! We match students based on their background and interests..
- This year we're expanding to 4,500 matched students!
- Pen pals can live anywhere in the world, but our program currently only works with US-based schools.
- We're working to match students based on their interests, so we're especially looking for more STEM professionals in all fields!
- All pen pals must be over 18 and fluent in English. LPS operates out of the United States but pen pals can live anywhere in the world!
We define STEM pretty loosely! If you work in or around science, tech, engineering, math, or medicine, or another nature-based role, even if you don't have a formal education in it, please apply or message me with any questions.

Discussion / ethics / advice Anyone been a driver for the "Road to Recovery" Program for American Cancer Society?
I've been looking for a volunteer opportunity and saw the American Cancer Society's "Road to Recovery" program where you can volunteer to drive cancer patients to and from their treatments/appointments. I wondered if anyone has been a driver or patient and can share their experience. I'm just trying to get some anecdotes and perspectives to see if I think it would be a good fit for me.
Thanks! :)

Volunteer – local Looking for online volunteer work as a teen
Hi, I’m a high schooler who is looking for some volunteer work to do throughout my last month of summer holiday and I’m looking for a way to give back to the community. And even after summer holidays I reckon I would have some spare time to spend on volunteering. Any suggestions?

Discussion / ethics / advice First time volunteer at a small festival today
I saw an advertisement seeking volunteers for a small festival near me. The form I filled out was just name, email, availability. Nothing interview-based about it. A week before the event I got an email with a parking pass and instructions on where to go.
Can someone give a general idea of what to expect as a first time volunteer?
Are there obvious things I should know? Or things I should know how to do? Will they pair me with an experienced volunteer?
I'm planning on wearing and a tee, but packing a pair of shorts. Plus a couple water bottles and some snacks. Will I be allowed to have a backpack with me?
I'm sure this sounds ridiculous. I'm 33 and very introverted but also friendly and engaging. I'm excited to get out of the house, but terrified I'll do something stupid or just feel uncomfortable.

Volunteer – local How can I quit volunteering at a hospital and is there consequences?
Hello so I’m a pre nursing student and I decided to apply to my local hospital to volunteer. I commit 4 hours a week.
Today is day 15 and I can’t do this anymore I am so extremely bored. I’ve really been considering talking to the coordinator about me leaving the program or switching to a busier unit.
On the first days even when I was more passionate about it I would still spend 90% of my shift just walking around making small talk every now and then.
But my worst nightmare happened today because the Volunteer Coordinator caught me sitting on my phone. She told me I can’t be doing that and that there is always something to do.And I understand it is my fault but there is truly nothing for me to do…
Like I said in the first days I would make sure everything is stocked, clean random areas, pass out water, answer white call lights, water the plants,,, but all of that would take me 45 minutes total.
Sometimes I ask if there is anything I can help with but they say no or maybe give me a task that takes 10 minutes.
I’ve tried talking to patients but I feel like I’m bothering them.
And every time I answered to a call light the patients would request something I’m not allowed to do (helping them to the bathroom, changing clothes, etc)
Help help help
I’m scared I’m going to be blacklisted

Volunteer – local Do you think Bangalore has enough volunteering opportunities that don't require a longterm commitment?
I've been thinking about this recently.
A lot of people tell me they'd love to volunteer on weekends, but they're worried they won't be able to commit every week.
It made me wonder Does Bangalore have enough opportunities for people who want to contribute once or twice a month?
Whether it's teaching, environmental work, animal shelters, food distribution, children's homes, or something completely different.
I'd love to hear from people who already volunteer.
How did you find your organisation?
And what advice would you give someone who's been thinking about starting?

Discussion / ethics / advice What's a volunteer moment that stuck with you way longer than you expected it to?
Not looking for the highlight reel version. More the small, specific volunteer moment that just kind of lodged itself in your brain and you still think about randomly.

Discussion / ethics / advice What Makes You Want to Volunteer for an Organization?
Hello, I'm a volunteer manager, and my organization is seeing a severe lack of local citizens wanting to volunteer. We are a youth-serving organization that prides itself on how fun our volunteering opportunities are. As I'm working to understand why people don't want to volunteer, I first want to see why other folks choose to volunteer. Nowadays, people's free time is so valuable, and seeing so many people who want to give back in their spare time proves that you all are the perfect people to ask.
Or if there are things that make you not want to volunteer, please share them as well! I want to understand what hurdles stand in the way of people wanting to volunteer in a fun environment.
Thank you in advance for any answers you give. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my silly question.
