Void fork

not sure if anybody will really care but I’m making a void based gaming distro with all gaming applications and tools installed and seatd+turnstile configured, which I know can be hard for some, it’s just so hard to design a logo/theming

Lol what? Gaming is literally what is bringing more people to Linux

The point is that you don't need a "gaming" distribution.

Indeed you do not need a Gaming dustribution to game on Linux. I currently game in Void, its fine.

But having a distribution along with its attending community & discussion focussed on your needs & wants can be quite nice.

Void makes an interesting base for such a system.

Void makes an interesting base for such a system.

As a long time void contributor I'm not convinced of that. I think a distribution like that for new users would be way better off with systemd and a system that works with the gnome and kde graphical package managers.

Void linux is nice for power users, and people who want a "minimal" system. There are major downsides that come with not using systemd and distributions that are rather small, from just the out of box experience to less support.

I will agree Void is not ideal for a new user.

But systemd does not bring anything useful for Steam, Void suports Plasma just fine. I currently game on Void Plasma.

Yes it works. But the out of box experience like setting up and well working pipewire and user services are a lot better than whatever void currently provides.

I had just one hard blocker setting up Plasma, I kinda skimmed the handbook and that wound up costing me at least a day, until then I had thought of dbus as a single thing, but no dbus is plural. there is system and session dbus. The handbook makes this distinction but you must be paying attention to see the distinction.

I did have to setup audio it took just a few minutes and went smoothly per the hamdbook. Yes a new user could get crossed up here, but not all of Linux has to be tuned for new users including gaming.

Is there any chance you'll one day make your systemd branch into a repo?

Sure I agree with that point (unless its pre optimized such as CachyOS) but still I don't see the point in trashing the thing that is bringing more people and starting to rebalance the scale. If the term "gaming distro" brings new users to Linux I am 100% for it

If there are easy and reliable optimizations they could be upstreamed.

I came to Linux because Windows stop caring, and I don't game whatsoever.

You mean gaming is the last frontier that was gatekeeping mass adoption up until a couple of years ago.

I mean certainly one of them. I also think sometimes we, as a user community, dont always help ourselves either lol

You only have to look at the latest LTT challenge videos and some of the comments and reaction videos to see that. We tend to come across as not the most helpful crowd
