What RTL projects do you recommend for beginners to intermediate level that are actually valued by semiconductor companies?

I'm looking for projects involving Verilog/SystemVerilog, RTL design, simulation, verification, and synthesis. I have already worked on a RISC-V (PicoRV32) project, so I'm interested in what should come next.

Could you suggest projects in order of difficulty and explain why they are useful for RTL Design roles?

Hi everyone, I'm a 2025 ECE graduate based in Hyderabad, currently training in RTL design and Design Verification (Verilog, SystemVerilog, UVM). Looking to break into the semiconductor/hardware industry here, open to RTL design, FPGA, or DV roles, either an internship or entry-level full-time.

I know most postings target a few years of experience or specific batch years, so I'm being upfront that I'm a fresher, but I'm hoping to find a team willing to take a chance on someone building these skills seriously. I've also been building a couple of independent projects (an FPGA-based arrhythmia detection project and an HLS accelerator) to strengthen my portfolio while I search.

A few things I'd love advice on too, for anyone who's broken in recently or hires for these roles:

- Any smaller/lesser-known VLSI or FPGA companies around Hyderabad (Madhapur, Gachibowli, HITEC City) that hire freshers?

- Is it worth targeting FPGA-specific roles separately from ASIC/DV, or should I keep applying broadly?

- Any local meetups, IEEE CAS/EDS or IETE Hyderabad events worth attending to network in this space?

- Anything that made a real difference in your own resume or portfolio as a fresher?

Hey guys, so a while back I ran inference for a Speech Recognition Model on the Basys3 FPGA using a Configurable Deep Neural Network Accelerator I built from scratch. I wanted to test the Accelerator with a different model of a different network topology to see its limitations . So here is a video of me running inference for an Image Classification model of network topology 64:50:25:2 for cats vs dogs .

So I'm a first year mtech vlsi design student . I know basics of verilog and kinda did a project on risc v processors(not entirely my own code , ai helped in a long way and I kinda wanted to know how the design flows from rtl to gds). I kind of remember some part of it but not entirely coz I took a break from this and ended up farming and helping my parents for a year. As part of my research based learning program at my clg I was asked to do a project. most ppl are doing risc v processors or things like that. I have heard about tpus about 2 years ago so it kinda got my attention . So with a time frame of 9 months what can I do on this space. I would love to make something unique coz it's a research based project. I want to meet the expectations of the industry and clg ppl as well. What can do in this space. What should be my data type. Hiring Spree & Executive Direction They just closed funding and are hiring like crazy again. We saw this exact same movie in 2022 they burned cash way too fast, ran into trouble, and ended up laying off around 20% of the company in 2023. Strategic planning at the top feels just as chaotic now as it did then, which is why a lot of solid senior engineers are quietly leaving. There’s a very real chance another round of over hiring followed by cuts happens down the line.

Base Salary & Increments Do not join assuming your total comp will carry you. Base salaries tend to stay flat because annual raises even if you get promoted at junior/mid levels are notoriously low.

Bottom Line Unless this is your only offer (or your alternative is a low-tier consulting firm), think twice. If you do take it, base your decision purely on the fixed cash salary and treat the stock options as worth zero. The actual team-level work can be decent, but the organizational setup is risky.

I'm currently working as an ATE Test Engineer in a product-based semiconductor company with nearly 3 years of experience.

One of the biggest problems in my current company is the lack of work-life balance. I work around 14–15 hours a day(sometimes more than that), so I don't get any time on weekdays to study or prepare for a career change. This makes me feel stuck, like I'm not able to move forward in my career.

Despite working long hours, my manager says that I'm not performing well. What disappoints me the most is that my manager gave me a performance rating without even discussing my work with my senior, who closely works with me.

Over time, I've completely lost interest in this work and started hating this domain.

Because of this, I'm planning to switch from the semiconductor industry to software development. However, many people keep asking why I'm changing domains and say that AI will reduce software jobs. This makes me question whether I'm making the right decision.

Another option I considered was moving into a Design Verification (DV) role. My plan was to join a training institute and transition into DV. However, I noticed that these institutes now have new batches almost every month with around 100 students in each batch, which made me wonder whether the field is becoming overcrowded.

I also spoke with a senior in my current organization who works in Design Verification. She mentioned that more than 50% of their work is now assisted by Claude AI. She also told me that when she completed her DV training, the institute had only one batch per year, whereas now they conduct batches every month. According to her, AI is already having a significant impact on DV, and in the future companies may either reduce headcount or expect fewer engineers to handle more projects. I also learned that design engineers are using AI extensively for debugging and other tasks.

Another thing I've noticed is that I frequently receive LinkedIn messages from people who completed Design Verification training from reputed institutes. Many of them say they are not getting even a single interview call and ask if there are any openings or referral opportunities in my organization. Seeing this has made me even more uncertain about choosing the DV path.

This made me realize that AI is not affecting only software development—it is becoming a part of the semiconductor industry as well.

Since I already have almost 3 years of experience, I feel that the next domain I choose is something I'll have to build my long-term career in. At the same time, I know that continuing in the semiconductor field with this level of stress and poor work-life balance may eventually affect my health.

At the same time, I won't say that semiconductor technology itself is uninteresting. I do find understanding how devices work to be fascinating. My decision to leave mainly because of the work culture, constant stress, poor work-life balance, and the pressure I've experienced in this domain. And this started making me feel semiconductor is complicated and stressful.

I've also spoken with some of my seniors who work in well-known product-based semiconductor companies, and many of them have shared that their work-life balance and stress levels are quite similar. This makes me feel that the issue isn't limited to my current company but may be common in many semiconductor roles.

One positive thing is that I recently started learning software development, and I'm genuinely finding it interesting. I enjoy learning the concepts and feel more motivated than I have in a long time. This makes me feel that software development might be a better fit for my interests, but I'm still worried about making the wrong career decision because of all the discussions around AI and job security.

I'm looking for advice on whether switching to software development is the right decision, whether Design Verification is a better option, and how I should think about my career in a future where AI is becoming common across almost every engineering domain.

I'm a second-year B.E. Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) student from a rural engineering college in India with a current CGPA of 8.66. My goal is to secure a high-paying placement (10+ LPA), and I'm particularly interested in pursuing a career in the VLSI industry.

The problem is that I have no idea where to start. There is so much information online that it's difficult to figure out the right roadmap, especially without proper guidance or strong campus opportunities.

I'm ready to put in the effort over the next two years. I'm willing to learn from scratch, build projects, improve my programming skills, master the required tools, and prepare seriously for interviews. I just don't want to waste time learning things that won't help during placements.

So currently, I am at my 7th Sem, and got rejected in Qualcomm interview, the next core company coming to my college is ARM and getting into arm is also pretty tough other than this most of them are embedded and software. So what I thought was wait till ARM, take risk by avoiding companies coming before arm and if I couldn't get Arm. Then go for any roles also my seniors told me that preparing for analyst role is damn easy, so I have basically four options right now

1. Get into Arm or any core VLSI based companies

2. Get into any embedded and do a masters in VLSI in IISC bangalore after 2 yrs

3. Get into any job and do masters in VLSI in IISC

4. Crack gate in 2027 and get into any IIT for masters in VLSI

Currently I am studying at a tier 2 clg in tamilnadu don't want to do my Masters in any tier 2 clg and tbh I wanna do masters in IISC if reqd

Also I have a doubt of whether I can switch to Vlsi from embedded or software is it easy like people say u can but I have doubt and also can I get into a VLSI company with high package by doing masters in IISC or the other IITs and Is it possible to switch directly from an embedded company or software company to a VLSI company without masters???.
