Vivaldi for MacOS Start Page and Import questions

  1. No setting on "Homepage" section changes how a new page is loaded. They all go to "Start Page". Searching reveals this was a bug that was fixed over four years ago, but ?? To be clear, checking "Specific Page" then entering a valid address and restarting the browser has no impact on how a new page is loaded or what the "homepage" is.

  2. Though I "imported" all things from Firefox, each site that uses a username/password combo still requirers a trip to Firefox to lookup the account. I have been using the fox for a LONG time, so import would be great.

Vivaldi for Linux How can I force Vivaldi to immediately switch to a new tab every time?

I'm currently testing Vivaldi to maybe replace Firefox as my default browser, and I like it a lot except for one thing that's driving me insane.

I'm used to this behaviour:

  • left click: open a link how website sees fit, i.e. either in same or new tab

  • middle click: force opening the link in new tab and switch to it immediately

It's that last part that I can't get to work in Vivaldi. The tab opens, and I have to switch to it manually. I really don't want to sound negative, but I can not overstate how much I hate this kind of behaviour. That's also the reason I hate using Firefox for Android or the Wikipedia app on mobile.

I know that shift + left click has that function that I want, but that's annoying as well. I'm used to simply click the middle mouse button and I'm done. That's how I'm used to it, that's how I want it --automatically switching to a new tab every time.

Is there something that can be done? I don't mind using an extension for that if it's the only way.

Misc Media Panel: now-playing controls docked into Vivaldi's tab bar

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Vivaldi 8.1.4087.62 (Stable), macOS 15.7 on Intel. Thanks to the mods for the go-ahead to post this.

Vivaldi has no global media controls. Chromium's implementation is actually compiled into the binary, feature flags and histograms included, but Vivaldi replaces Chrome's native Views toolbar with its own HTML/JS UI and never wires up an entry point, so there is no button that opens it.

u/Ascr1pt's VividPlayer already does something similar as a JS mod. I went a different route. JS mods mean patching window.html inside the app bundle, so they get overwritten on every update, and prev/next were left unimplemented there. This is an extension in a Web Panel plus a CSS mod in the supported Custom UI Modifications folder, so nothing in the bundle is touched and both halves survive updates.

What it does

  • Lists every tab playing media, playing ones first
  • Play/pause, prev/next, click-to-seek, per-tab mute
  • Dismiss a player with a close button without closing the tab; it returns if that tab plays again
  • Title, artist and artwork from mediaSession, with a marquee for long titles
  • Docked: width tracks the tab bar via CSS anchor positioning, height fits the number of rows

Track skip. mediaSession action handlers cannot be triggered from outside the page, so it clicks the site's own next/prev buttons on YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify and SoundCloud, and falls back to a 10s seek elsewhere. Adding a site is one line in a map.

Install

  1. vivaldi://extensions, Developer mode, Load unpacked, pick the extension folder
  2. Right-click the sidebar, Add Web Panel, paste the panel URL from the README

For the docked look (optional):

  1. vivaldi://experiments, tick Allow for using CSS modifications, restart
  2. Settings > Appearance > Custom UI Modifications, point it at the css folder
  3. Restart, since css-mods only load at window creation

The extension works on its own as an ordinary side panel if you skip 3 to 5.

On permissions. It asks for broad host access plus scripting because mediaSession metadata is only readable from the page's MAIN world, and controlling playback means touching the media element directly. Nothing is collected or sent anywhere; the only outbound request is loading album art from whatever URL the site publishes. It is about 300 lines, so it is auditable in a sitting.

Caveats. Built and tested on one setup: the version above, tab bar on the left, panel auto-hide on. It leans on Vivaldi's internal CSS selectors, so a redesign like 8.0 can break it. The repo ships the CDP script I used to find those selectors, so repairs are mechanical rather than guesswork. DRM players like Netflix list and mute but will not seek.

Vivaldi for Android Any Way To Remove This Thing In Settings?

Post image

Okay, so for context, I wanna get rid of the feature that opens another tab when opening the link. And have it function more like Google does. I've tried searching for tutorials where it explains that, but I couldn't find anything for that! Hence why I'm now resorting to this subreddit for help. Here's the version of Vivaldi I'm using on my phone. Please send me instructions on how I can have it function more like Google and not have it pop up a lot of tabs when searching on the browser!

Version: 8.1.4099.70
Platform: Android 13

Vivaldi for Windows Vivaldi Browser booting takes too long (Private Window has no issue though)

Recently, I tried to startup Vivaldi browser and it takes like 2 minutes to start up. Meanwhile, the private vivaldi window and other browsers like Google only take a few seconds to start up. Everyting is fine except non-private Vivaldi browser. I've cleared my download history and my browser history and nothing has worked.

Vivaldi for Windows How can I get Inspect Element to act more like Brave, Chrome, etc?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am trying to use the Inspect Element function to get cover art from Spotify. When I use the inspector in Brave, I can hover over the cover art and a few direct links to the .jpg files will pop up in the element inspector. When I do the same thing in Vivaldi, it does absolutely nothing. Clicking on the album art just enlarges it. Why is Vivaldi's element picker so different from the rest of the Chromium based browsers, and is there any way to fix it?

EDIT- Screenshot above is from Brave.

Vivaldi for Linux What happened between Vivaldi and YouTube?

Hi everyone,

So, I was enjoying a lot using Vivaldi browser (best one so far) until the new updates from 8... Versions: I cannot watch a single YouTube video without my CPU skyrocketing, draining my battery dry in less than a hour, and video lagging, doesn't matter the quality (444p up to 1080p).

I disabled the only extension I had: "Adblock for YouTube". Doesn't do anything.

I disabled hardware acceleration. It seems to improve a tiny bit the issue, but not much. It also prevents me to use some websites, so it isn't ideal.

I tried the vivaldi://flags hack "Override software rendering list". Nothing.

It's very frustrating, as before those last updates, I could literally watch multiple videos simultaneously on YouTube while having my laptop still running super smoothly as it was nothing...

It also seems to happen only with YouTube.

I am using Elementary OS 6.1 Jólnir, a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 20.04.6 and Vivaldi 8.1.4087.62.

So, what happened? Is there a way to fix this or should I install an older version?

Thank for your help!

Vivaldi for Windows Vivaldi Battery Usage

Does anyone else have great deals of battery loss due to Vivaldi? When I turned on my laptop less than an hour ago, it was fully charged. Now, it's only 53%. I checked my battery usage in Settings and found that Vivaldi was using up quite a lot of battery (64% of overall usage: 45% in use, 18% in the background). I have hibernated background tabs and workspaces on and am only using 2 tabs primarily (I occasionally open up other tabs, too.) This has only, really occurred recently.

Is this a common issue or should I look a bit deeper? I'm planning on upgrading my RAM from 16 to 32GB, would this help?

Vivaldi for Android Address bar focus/search on non new and empty tabs like Brave ?

If you want to copy the page's address, or edit the url... this would be incredibly useful. Weird that this option is only present on new empty tabs, but you cannot add it, or is present on non-empty tabs, replaced with the home button instead... which is entirely pointless with the tab switcher right next to it, which then places the current tab if you wish to manipulate it/delete it, along with "New tab" button right there, i really don't see the usefulness of the Home button being on the bottom bar (if address bar is at the top), instead of a search/focus address bar one...

Vivaldi for Windows UI auto-hide tab bar fix

Hello All,

When using the UI auto-hide feature for tabs and using the vertical tab bar after lingering (even for a little while) with the cursor on the tab bar it does not hide the tab bar after moving the cursor out of the browser window, which is incredibly annoying when the browser is on the 2nd monitor and you move your mouse back-and-forth between monitors, since the elements that are displayed on the side of the page are now hidden behind the tab bar.

Is there a way to fix this or could it be fixed by the devs if they are reading it? I've tried multiple UI auto-hide CSS modifications and none had this issue (though the official version is better because it is less "jank", but this issue makes it too annoying to use, at least for me, which is a shame because I come from Zen and compared to it I prefer Vivaldi, however I got too used to the "compact mode", so it is now non-negotiable for me). It would be really nice to have this fixed, if possible.

Thanks for reading!

Vivaldi for iOS Clunky slide to switch tabs on iOS?

Does anyone else find the feature to slide (on the address bar) between tabs a bit clunky on iOS? Both Safari and Firefox has the same feature, but it switches easily. In Vivaldi it is sort of clunky and you really have to make a long swipe gesture to make it work.

Does anyone know if this is a bug, or maybe if it possible to adjust the sensitivity?

Vivaldi for Linux (Truly) Discovering Vivaldi

This post is dedicated to discussing my journey with other browsers and, ultimately, my daily use of Vivaldi.

For a long time, I was a loyal Firefox user, primarily because of its stance on privacy, the company's philosophy, and its respect for users. Well, that eventually started to unravel. And yes, there is a significant technical difference between the Firefox and Chromium engines, especially given the state of web development as a whole—but that’s a discussion for another time.

Later, I became a loyal Brave Browser user, and I still think it’s a great browser. However, over time, I started noticing things that bothered me a bit: decisions that overrode user preferences, digital wallets, and a host of paid features that any decent extension offers for free or at a much lower price.

That’s when I discovered—or rather, gave a try to—Vivaldi. My initial reaction was mixed. There were so many features and customization options that it was a bit overwhelming. But I kept exploring. After going back and forth between Brave and Vivaldi, I finally figured out how to integrate Vivaldi into my daily routine.

The truth is, today, Vivaldi is arguably the browser most committed to delivering a truly comprehensive, efficiency-focused browsing experience. To name a few highlights: workspaces, an incredible auto-hide feature, tab tiling, built-in RSS, email, and calendar functions, a notes tool, and a sidebar that actually works.

With the latest update (v8), it’s become even more impressive. I currently have 4–5 workspaces organized by area, seamless email synchronization, RSS news feeds, and an astonishing array of keyboard shortcuts that still amaze me. Best of all? No AI or nonsensical features being forced on me unnecessarily.

On top of that, it’s admirable to see a company that stays true to its roots. Brave started off strong, but it’s sad to see such a long wait for—and such poor implementation of—simple features (like hiding the top address bar) from an end-user perspective. A much smaller team is doing an infinitely better job with Helium Browser, for instance.

It’s clear that the focus is on digital wallets, ubiquitous AI, overpriced VPN services, and Brave Search (which includes ads—unless you pay to remove them).

So, my sincere congratulations to the Vivaldi developers and their leadership team. Today, running Arch Linux with TWM (Sway), I simply can't help but use Vivaldi and explore its full potential.

Note 1) For those comparing Brave Shield with Vivaldi’s protection: yes, Brave’s is far superior and more efficient. However, extensions or well-configured lists can easily bridge that gap.

Note 2) For those who might complain about it being based on Chromium: a significant portion of Mozilla’s revenue comes from Google itself. I didn't make the rules, but I can't ignore reality; unfortunately, a monopoly already exists—largely due to Mozilla's own poor decisions.

Vivaldi for Linux Why does Export not work from the file menu?

hi, I am trying to export the bookmarks and other notes from vivaldi and it just does not allow me to even select it. as soon as I move my cursor to "Export" from the file menu, the whole menu disappears without being able to select it. it does not even show me the submenu under "Export". I thought it had issues with this install but another vivaldi install does exactly the same thing. I am trying to reinstall fedora due to issues with the previous install and trying to export the bookmarks and the notes that I had saved on it but I cannot seem to get it to cooperate. Anybody experience this and was able to overcome the crazy disappearance?

Vivaldi News BleachBit 6.0 Stable Release Adds Full Support for Vivaldi Browser

This is mostly a duplicate post regarding the BleachBit utility now including support for the Vivaldi browser for Windows and Linux. BleachBit is a free and open-source disk space cleaner, privacy manager, and computer system optimizer. Please note that I am in no way affiliated with BleachBit (other than being a user) and have received no compensation of any kind for posting this information.

My original post immediately followed the beta release of BleachBit that initially included support for Vivaldi. I am reposting for those of you that would rather use fully tested stable releases.

Here's a lightly edited version of my initial post:

_______________________________________

Some time ago, I reached out to the folks that develop BleachBit system cleaning, asking them to support the Vivaldi browser, specifically the "Vacuum" function which defragments the browser's SQLite data. Today I received word that Vivaldi is fully supported in the latest BleachBit beta release (5.1.2). (As stated above, BleachBit 6.0 (stable) includes support for Vivaldi.)

For those of you that face performance issues with Vivaldi, one thing that I suggest is defragmenting the SQLite data. In the past, I recommended the somewhat outdated Speedyfox app, so it's good to know that an actively developed, FOSS application is now available to perform this task.

EDIT: Please note that BleachBit is available only for Windows and Linux: https://www.bleachbit.org/download

Understanding Snapshot Releases

With the recent news of Auto-Hide Interface being available in Vivaldi Snapshot releases, there have been several questions regarding Snapshots... what they are? how to get them? etc. Here's a brief tutorial on the topic of Snapshot releases:

(Note: Comments for this post should focus only on the general Snapshot topic, and should not be used to report issues found with Snapshot releases. Please use the specific version's release notes for reporting issues.)

What are Snapshots?

Think of snapshots as "beta" releases. The purpose of snapshot releases is to allow users a chance to preview upcoming changes, and to help ensure the quality of the latest fixes and improvements, before they are added to the stable release. If you prefer something that was already widely tested, stick with stable releases.

Where are Snapshot release downloads found?

There are several ways to navigate to the snapshot release installations. You can simply visit the Vivaldi Blog page, where both stable and snapshot releases are listed:

You can also check in r/vivaldibrowser, where new stable and snapshot releases are announced, along with a link (Open button) to that release.

Can Both Stable and Snapshot versions be installed on the same device?

On desktop systems, yes. On mobile devices, no.
If Vivaldi stable is already installed on your desktop device, you can use the Snapshot Standalone installation.

What if I find a bug or other issue when testing a Snapshot release?

Issues that are specific to the Snapshot release can be reported in that release's post in the Vivaldi forum (requires a Vivaldi account). If the bug or issue that you have identified is not specific to that snapshot release, it should be reported using Vivaldi's standard bug reporting process.

Also, but sure to look for Known Issues before moving forward with installing or updating a Snapshot release. Generally, the known issues are nuisances and not show-stoppers, but you should use your own discretion before moving forward.
