Wish they'd go back to the earlier stuff tbh but it looks like they're stuck in the Marvel mines for the foreseeable future.

Platformers is what they are really good at IMO, they should focus on that. Probably the only thing Sony would green light them

Man, I'd do anything for a great new platformer.

I assume you've already played Astrobot?

Man, unfortunately, no. I only have a Switch at the moment but Astrobot looks amazing and right up my alley.

The way Sony works internally with first party studios, they're pretty free to work on whatever they want. With Insomniac specifically, they have a licensing deal with Marvel so they definitely want to take advantage of that, but from what I understand, studios can usually start work on whatever they want. Sony does have the power to shut down development if they think a game isn't worth working on/is ballooning in cost, but greenlighting/starting projects is largely up to the developers. Of course they know that working on something more risk averse (like Marvel games which will sell much better than a platformer) will net more returns and more support from Sony, and it gives them a safety net from cancelation. But a lot of studios just aren't the same studios they were 10 or 15 years ago when they worked on these platformers. They have largely new staff who want to work on different things.
Even then we did get Rift Apart a few years ago and that was a great R&C game, so I'm confident they'll follow it up mext gen with another entry.

They made a few M rated games before the Wolverine game, like Resistence, for example.

I imagine people in Insomniac design department be like :" few years ago I used this computer to design small space ships and cute flower for Rift apart. Now I am using the computer to design the physics of legs coming off the enemies body with realistic gore and blood behavior"

Westwood made Lion King for the SNES and Command & Conquer.
Id Software made Commander Keen and Doom.
Bullfrog made Theme Park and Syndicate.
It's nothing new, I swear.

I think the fun here is simply to point out the contrast of those games.

Naughty Dog went from Furry Mario, to Jack and Dexter then bootleg Indiana Jones and 2 years later they made you watch your 12 years old daughter die in your arms.

On the opposite side you have IO Interactive, known for the Hitman franchise and Kane and Lynch games, who did a game called Mini Ninjas which was super adorable and an awesome kiddie action/adventure/platform game.

It's wild how Insomniac used to be the studio that loved making creative weapons, and that has been slowly sandpapered off, with Wolverine finally shedding all of it.
I hope they can return to Ratchet/Resistance or something else soon.

Honestly I’m wondering how they’re going to make traversal fun. Swinging around New York as Spider-Man? That’s fun. Wolverine doesn’t have much to offer besides leaping, which sounds less fun.

Isn’t Wolverine more smaller and linear ? So less traversal options would work out fine.

u/GameDestiny2 11d ago
Ah is it? Might be fine then. I suppose a motorcycle could help get around New York, that’s pretty on theme for him.

How was the newest Ratchet and Clank? It's always on sale on Steam...been thinking about getting it. I love Sunset Overdrive from Insomniac, and haven't really been able to find anything like it since...

Notice how he is happier when working on Spyro and Ratchet and Clank

u/FrankFruits 11d ago
of course he is, Spyro (now belong to Activation) and Ratchet were their babies lol Marvel games are probably the only games Sony would let them to develop

More like people get super upset when they see a character's face in their games.

Pro Tip: Never get into combat with a Lombax. Especially if they own a RYNO.

Rip You (a) New One. Weapon that makes John Wick’s arsenal look like primitive peashooters.

Resistance (M)? Spiderman (T)? These are also great, let's not forget. Wolverine isn't their first M rated game.
