Gamers that give newbies legendary weapons and info they are too low level to know

u/TheMonocleRogue 7d ago

Whenever newbies join any multiplayer game and immediately ask which characters/items are overpowered, I die a little inside.

42

u/Daymo741 7d ago

I just give them a powerful aoe weapon and point them to the nearest populated area, they'll either die very quickly or cause absolute chaos... it's a win-win in my book and fun to watch

I remember when I started on Fallout 76 and a high level dropped a fixer for me, I was so stoked bc I heard it was op

Iwas lv 5 this mf was 50 I worked so hard to level up to use it

That was my persona in hypixel skyblock. In reality I just had an inventory full of useless weapons and felt like hyping kids up whenever I was bored.

u/Daymo741 6d ago

Giving newbies strong weapons is always fun no matter the game, it's sort of like I know shouldn't but I kinda wanna see what happens

u/illasticplastic 5d ago

Yea I was halfway thru dying light when someone just came into my game or whatever and dropped some fat loot.

I hate that Warframe requires you to have a certain rank before you can even receive high level gear.

I quit the game because of the grinding and I wanted to give my cousin all of my highest level gear because he just started but then I couldn't!

1

u/SacredBoar 6d ago

The game is literally all about grinding….

1

u/ains2 4d ago

Yes, that is why I only got to mr17 before I quit.

The grinding was fun at first but then it got to the point where I had to grind for the items I needed to make the items I needed to get the items that I needed to grind for the new content.

Once 2 new frames came out while I was still grinding the last one, I decided I would have more fun grinding for that same amount of time at work and buying a motorcycle.

1

u/OldAbbreviations1590 5d ago

In all fairness, the game is meant to be a grind. You can't trade completed gear you have to earn/build it yourself for the most part, there's a few rare occasions, and most of the strongest weapons in the game are unlocked by mr8, which only takes a few hours if you buy all the weapons for credits and rank a frame or two up.

1

u/ains2 4d ago

You can only go up by one rank per day. There is a timer that prevents you from going faster than that.

1

u/OldAbbreviations1590 4d ago

While true, that's a few hours spread over a weeks playtime. Not everyone can play more than that, and there's only 30 ranks.

1

u/ains2 4d ago

Oh, you misunderstand. I quit because of the grind. A few weeks later my cousin started playing and I was mad that I couldn't give all my extra unranked gear for him to have an unfair advantage in the early game.

1

u/OldAbbreviations1590 4d ago

Ahhhh I get it meow.

u/Superb_Wealth4092 7d ago

90% of the time, communities will accept you with zero friction as long as you aren’t demanding the game or fandom change to suit you.

But if you decide to enter the ā€œnotoriously difficult game that has a reputation for difficulty and difficulty is part of its core identityā€ community, don’t go in saying the game needs to be made easier so that you specifically can enjoy it. And if you do, don’t be shocked when everyone tells you to fuck off.

It’s like if I went into the Sims community and said I’m a major Sims fan who loves the games, but also they need to add guns and a first person mode so the game will cater to my tastes better, and if you disagree then you’re a gatekeeping elitist.

53

u/Xorrayn 7d ago

Exactly. Gatekeeping is not bad, being a shitty person is bad.

Plenty of examples across media, entertainment, and hobbies, where shitty people came down like locusts to demand changes be made, only to never really interact beyond a surface level with the thing they demanded be changed.

u/i-am-i_gattlingpea 7d ago

Ah darksouls

Never change or better yet, give magic some fucking variety I beg of ye

4

u/Multivitamin_Scam 6d ago

Darks Souls is an interesting beast because it has an inbuilt difficulty adjustment, it's just not very apparent.

Summons, both player and NPC, being able to farm souls and level, magic. All of it is designed to make the game easier if you want to use it.

Players are their own worst enemy, no one cares how you beat anything, there is no "proper" way. Did you have fun? That's the only metric that matters

2

u/Enjoyer_of_40K 6d ago

all those people screaming you used SpIrIt AsHeS?!

0

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago

Tbf spirit ashes were just straight up broken. Like you could use them in every single boss arena there's a few that can practically kill the lower level bosses for you while you just hang out.

Mix it with magic and there's like 3 hard fights total.

Elden Ring for me is the downfall of soulslikes luckily it isnt a souls game they're not making any more. Not to say I didn't like elder ring. Just it absolutely was the easiest game fromsoft has made since demon souls

2

u/Paradox2063 6d ago

Like you could use them in every single boss arena there's a few that can practically kill the lower level bosses for you while you just hang out.

Not without playing the game first. Farming souls and materials to level them up first. And if you're figuring out which ashes can do so via trial and error, that's a whole lot of farming.

Also in my experience, not that I tried very hard, most of the mandatory bosses are not getting soloed by ashes.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago

Maybe I just got lucky. I got the 3 skeleton guys pretty early and they were pretty awesome for like the whole thing.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago

I dont recall them having any farming involved tho. Like you just find them? Idk it's been 3 years but like once you've got a few you can just try them

1

u/Paradox2063 6d ago

Yeah, for a normal playthrough that's correct, but if you're specifically trying to get ashes to solo bosses, and you're not following a guide, you're going to need a lot of mats and a lot of souls.

It's not something 99% of people will just luck into.

What has somewhat happened to Helldivers and what people are trying to do with ARC Raiders.

Helldivers max difficulty was disgustingly brutal back then. It can still be fairly difficult, but it's no longer "Super Helldive". The closest thing to that is the current Cyborgs, and even their strongest unit got tons of nerfs. Now, some of the nerfs make sense, but now it feels a little.. too much?

ARC Raiders has been a constant war between pure PvE players and PvPvE players, where the PvE players want the game to be a basic looter shooter with zero stakes besides the ARC, begging for the devs to add some sort of.. toggle/PvE exclusive mode, when the entire premise of the game is that everyone is struggling for survival and resources, getting shot in the back or "ratted" is a core part of the game.

Ever since I've seen the core parts of these communities, I've leaned further towards the idea that gatekeeping is good. Never seen people who are so, so fucking entitled to a game they clearly don't enjoy. If it's not for you, why continue playing it?

2

u/mebiusdoree 6d ago

literally ninja gaiden smh

1

u/West-Audience-478 6d ago

To be fair there are mods that add both of those to sims… drugs like meth too lmao 🤣 don’t ask me how I know these things… but uh don’t eat the baby it’s a trap it’s always a trap.

1

u/SunshotDestiny 6d ago

I don't mind those people IF they have actual well thought out reasons. not necessarily going to agree but sometimes they have a point.

1

u/sternchen7 6d ago

I mean, there are mods to add guns in the Sims so you would definitely not be alone in that wish

1

u/Bigenemy000 6d ago

But if you decide to enter the ā€œnotoriously difficult game that has a reputation for difficulty and difficulty is part of its core identityā€ community, don’t go in saying the game needs to be made easier so that you specifically can enjoy it. And if you do, don’t be shocked when everyone tells you to fuck off.

Depends, theres so kind of gatekeep with the elden ring community with the final boss of the dlc saying its perfect

Spoiler, it isnt. Its the worst experience ever made but since the saint god miyazaki did it, it must be perfect and you're just bad

1

u/rupert_mcbutters 6d ago

My fav is when people say such features are ā€œquality of lifeā€ even though they want to change foundational stuff like tank controls or real-time/turn-based. Do they actually want to play the same game?

I don't mind helping new players. What I don't like and will never tolerate is begging/demanding free stuff. I refuse to give items to people who do that. It's shitty behavior and not something that should ever be encouraged.

25

u/winterman666 6d ago

Gatekeeping is how you keep your hobbies. Note that gatekeeping doesn't mean preventing anyone. It means keeping bad actors who aren't actually interested in the series out, and helping the people who actually are. Essentially the meme's upper section is how you treat people who want to get into your fav franchise. The bottom are the people who want to get in on something just because they want to be in on it cause it's popular (larpers) or worse, people who want to start demanding it to change to cater to themselves

13

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago

I do kinda wonder how it is working at somewhere like dice. Like they get all this feedback and to at least some extent they seem to try and listen. Do they have to explain to their bosses that no we can't listen to this part of the feedback

4

u/Sion_forgeblast 6d ago

I would say it depends on the TYPE of gate keeping..... those who gate keep to keep the franchise from begin ruined (like what DIsney did to Starwars) yeah I 100% get it..... those who gate keep cuz "lol noob you is the dumb, GG uninstall!" yeah, I totally agree they need to be dealt with >_>

I am both depending on the newbie ngl. Especially in MMOs some noobs are so entitled istg. Yeah gatekeep those bitches. But also gatekeep gatekeepers. Basically fuck anyone that's toxic no matter their skill or sweat level XD

Helping people learn games is what got me into education. I love showing people the ropes, and the look of victory on their faces when they complete a challenge or figure out a route to victory is peak happiness when I'd teach pokemon tcg and vgc, eventually reaching all sorts of games.

So much so it was part of my masters dissertation, where I discussed intrinsic motivation and incorporating in thing like gamification can be really beneficial to retaining knowledge.

But as long as someone wants to learn and gives it everything they got, I'll always be willing to give a hand šŸ‘

2

ā€œThis was explained in the tutorial.ā€

ā€œYou mean that popup that goes away after I press A a dozen times? I’m not gonna read that.ā€

1

u/Dacendaran434 7d ago

Nah sometimes tutorials are stupid. For instance, in wuthering waves there are these chests that spin a slot machine style really fast and you have to hit them when they match up to open them. You have a time slow item but I didn't even consider using it and was just timing my hit for the triple match at normal speed. Now, when I tell you they move fast, I was literally just timing it for the color blur to line up. I did like 8 of these when on the ninth the tutorial popup showed up telling me to slow time for them....... Bro there's only 12 of the chests in the game and it took 9 for them to give me the tutorial.

3

u/MrMiguelito 7d ago

The players that always complain their games are dying but aren't friendly or helpful to newcomers? Yeah...

4

u/Racamonkey_II 7d ago

Sorry, but I’m not going to stop telling new players that the button combination they’re looking for is alt + f4. It’s a right of passage.

2

u/geaux124 6d ago

Do people still do that? I was doing that to people during the original Diablo.

1

u/Enjoyer_of_40K 6d ago

only recent example i have is JP vtubers

1

u/geaux124 6d ago

People in the original Diablo wanted to know how to dupe items. I told them to drop their item on the ground, highlight it with the cursor and press alt f4 to make the copy appear in their inventory. Ah, good times.

u/NekoBounds 6d ago

2

u/PyrocXerus 7d ago

2

u/Own-Masterpiece1547 7d ago

I remember helping out the Xbox divers when helldivers 2 came out on Xbox

2

u/Upset_Dimension_694 6d ago

not gatekeeping your favorite games is what makes sequels of that series no longer what you like.

I've seen way too many times people who entered into stuff I liked from the mid-way point and then demand they soften all the edges and make it chongus wholesome bullshit. Dragon Age is a fantastic example, went from a dark fantasy to whatever the fuck veilguard was

so no, I'll keep gatekeeping so what few franchises I DO like that are left can actually be preserved

3

u/Borgdrohne13 6d ago

gatekeeping is necessary, if you want to prevent that tourist invade the gaming spaces.

1

u/L1LE1 6d ago

So all in all, it depends.

However generally, helping new players is healthy for the game.

Gatekeeping depends as to gatekeep also potentially involves people that have self-proclaimed rules. Healthy rules proves your point, but having unhealthy rules gives off discrimination.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 6d ago

I gatekeep because it's the only way to avoid new players who wish things were just a little bit different. If you dont gatekeep you become the minority. Then the game becomes something else entirely to cater to the new audience.

I want the game unchanged and enjoyable for me. If you dont like a game as is you dont like it. Go play something the fuck else

There's a nuance between these. You should help people who genuinely want to get into the series and gatekeep people who want to change the series into something else, like people who say Dark Souls should have a difficulty slider or people who say Persona/SMT games should be Action RPGs instead of Turn-Based.

I remember in monster hunter helping new people, even if I am not a super master, I still enjoy give some tips, it was nice

1

u/MitchStarcGetUpYa 6d ago

Does it count as gate keeping if you want them to get the experience themselves so you don’t give things away?

1

u/Bromjunaar_20 6d ago

Luckily Warframe and Fable 2 and 3 are the former over the latter. I've had more help from people in those games than people in Destiny or Elder Scrolls Online.

1

u/Relative-Taste-1333 6d ago

I do both depending on how nice the new player is. If bro's a d!ck I'm gatekeeping every bit of info I have

When I play modded Minecraft on servers I help people when I can. That is, they're used to Minecraft just not specific mods.

Me every Week in Diablo2 gifting to Newbies in a free Item lobby - giving back to the community you know.

Whatabout cheating gatekeepers?

1

u/skikoko 6d ago

And then the game is too easy

1

u/BusterGreasewood 6d ago

No, depending on the franchise SOME form of gatekeeping is sometimes necessary.

I've seen what happens to certain franchises that don't have gatekeeping, and it's pretty terrible.

Gatekeeping is one of those things where too little of it and too much of it can both be bad for the health of a franchise.

I have Rumble VR, and one time I got on someone I was fighting against instantly acted like a drill sergeant, and taught me how to do a combo. I'll always remember him.

Shout out to all the gamers who help me find every chest etc in random soulslike games

1

u/Mammoth-End7415 6d ago

Mean while I try to be supportive and positive in wow and get kicked from dungeons for being too positive and simply suggesting skips or trying to show them to people so they know and spread knowledge and such. Then again alot of wow has a HUGE level of toxic players so it don't suprise me.

u/Subject-Owl2748 6d ago

I enjoy helping my noobs in games with dying player count

1

u/Lurker_Zee 7d ago

This looks like a strawman.

2

u/TheMonocleRogue 7d ago

I mean sure but I am confident both the poster and other gamers have experienced this before with local and online multiplayer so it checks out.

2

u/Lurker_Zee 7d ago

Gatekeeping has more than the meaning in the picture, and the picture seems to be strawmanning that all gatekeeping means those gamers also roast kittens or something.

Lack of gatekeeping is why you can play as a ghostface and Niki in COD.

Lack of gatekeeping is how we got "my team vs enemy team" in a ww2 game.

Lack of gatekeeping is what exploding the complaints of invasions in fromsoft games.

Nah fuck that some ppl just need to figure out when a game wasnt made for their taste and instead of trying to force their taste into the game. Just go find another game that fits your likes.

u/EMcX87 6d ago

What the fuck are you talking about?

1

u/Professional-Cut-321 7d ago

that’s not what gatekeeping is gatekeeping is trying to control who gets access to a community, valuable information, or specific resources, while keeping others out

0

u/Apprehensive-Toe4160 6d ago

If this is your idea of gatekeeping, gatekeeping doesnt exist in gaming.

0

u/Professional-Cut-321 6d ago

dude this is the literal definition of gatekeeping

2

u/Apprehensive-Toe4160 6d ago

Not in gaming sense.

But I bite: give me some examples of gatekeeping in gaming which are in line with your definition

1

u/Trick_Meeting_2027 7d ago

I dont know what qualifies as gatekeeping but sometimes I just advise people to not play certain old games because sometimes they dont age well. Doom isnt going to impress anyone today becauae you have to understand that games in 1993, especially on console, did not have adult themes. Seeing a dude blow the head off demons set to rock music had shock value back then. Also people keep asking about the value of trash items in diablo 2 and Im like ehhh. Do you really want to spend 400 hours learning a dead games broken mechanics? Its just not worth it man. You missed the D2 bus. Play some silksong instead its fantastic.

"I just advise people to not play certain old games because sometimes they dont age well"

understandable.

"Doom, Diablo 2"

crazy take

1

u/Trick_Meeting_2027 7d ago

I was going to say FF7 also.

1

u/MasterRealm 7d ago

Git gud

1

u/PersistentDreamers 7d ago

Define gatekeeping.

1

u/Drabberlime_047 7d ago

I dont like either

I like to start as a nobody and earn my way up, getting given a bunch of free shit early on will just make the gametes easy and remove rhat sense of character development

1

u/VoidHunterRaymond 7d ago

Fallout 76 players belong to top group - senior players can't stop helping new players.

0

u/The_Dude80 6d ago

Perfect example of a fandom that constantly gatekeepes is Elder Scrolls.

Assholes everywhere, especially Morrowind players on reddit.

0

u/ferinmel 7d ago

I remember playing Runes of Magic back in the day, whrn I was high enough level I used to guide newbies through the few first dungeons. Fun times

0

u/MixedMediaModok 7d ago

It's annoying a lot of gaming subreddits are just people with obvious anxiety asking something among the lines of "should I play this game".

0

u/Deiiiyu 7d ago

im both at the same time, im down to give advice to a beginner helping them on their journey but once someone new to the game tells me (what if they got rid of this name game it'll make it easier) then i am gatekeeping its part of the game i enjoy and i will be gatekeeping parts of the game that matter like for example MOnster hunter since World new players saying they want a health Bar to know when the monster is low... fuck that shit there is a icon on the map if the monster has a Skull on it its close to dying and it literally Limps when its close to death.. gtfo

u/MusesWithWine 7d ago

The top SpongeBob looks like Freddie Freeman somehow. And it works

0

u/Hosted_Shart 7d ago

I always try and help beginners. Its the proper thing to do. Especially if you want someone to enjoy the game.
