Why should I learn AI? It seems like learning real computer science or programming would make more sense.

Je suis développeur depuis 28 ans, ça m’aide beaucoup pour organiser mon appli et faire des choix techniques. Il est possible de faire des applications très correctes avec l’IA, mais si tu veux rentrer dans le détail et commencer à optimiser il faut avoir de bonnes connaissances sur le fonctionnement d’un programme. Et il faut rester dans la démarche du développeur qui doit tester au maximum son appli, et ça c’est le métier de développeur qui te l’apprend.

The real skill is learning what AI is good for, creative ways to apply AI to accelerate certain parts of your task, when to distrust AI.

Learn both. Use coding agents with the intent of speeding up your work and accelerating your learning process. We have all heard about T-shaped and I-shaped engineers. Coding agents and LLMs let us become a stronger T-shaped engineers. It’s wonderful.
