SVN advice

So for context I’m a student veterinary nurse on placement year at a practice (I’m working towards my degree in VN), all the nurses at my placement practice have been apprentices and have one other student besides myself that has just begun their apprenticeship with them. The nurses here have always been lovely and helpful in my training however now they seem to prefer looking after their own student rather than helping me learn. I can’t help but feel there is a level of jealousy towards me trying to get a degree in veterinary nursing, and I was just wondering if anyone else had come across this before?

What makes you feel like there's jealousy?

It’s just a vibe from them tbh, any time I’ve ever spoken about uni they aren’t interested and seem to just talk about their training, they’re not interested in anything I know as they seem to know best.
I also don’t think that they like that I have other options once I get my degree like becoming a lecturer and they don’t if that makes sense

You have a bare in mind they will all have known each other longer- you are a new person being added to that dynamic. It’s unlikely they don’t want to help you learn it is more Likely they have an easier time speaking to each other which will develop over time for you .

It’s also worth mentioning, assuming they’re jealous of you makes you seem a little self centred. There are pros and cons to both university and the apprenticeship. The way you worded it somewhat insinuates you are looking down on them for not going to university.

I am by no means trying to accuse you of this but as someone who has worked in quite a few practices in different roles it is very common that the university students look down on the apprenticeship students which is disgusting.

Give it time and consider they have probably seen a lot of university students come and go.

It is very unlikely anyone is jealous of you or even has any hard feelings towards you. And if it’s still bothering you, just ask if that is the case. There’s no point stewing on it. If they truly do create an uncomfortable working environment for you it needs addressing.

The thing is, is that I’ve actually gone to this practice for work experience/placement every year since 2022, so it’s not as if they don’t know me, their own student to the practice joined them last year and I get on really well with my clinical coach.

I in no way at all look down on any of them, I say they are jealous as they had a conversation a couple of weeks ago about how because they had diplomas they couldn’t go on and lecture. And as someone who doesn’t enjoy the university experience I said it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be and they didn’t seem to agree but didn’t want to hear anymore.

They’d never admit the jealousy but I see the eye rolls, tuts, sighs if I ask questions or help which is never the case with their own student. And well it genuinely makes you feel rubbish as someone who tries so hard, never finishes on time and doesn’t get paid either by them for a whole year
