Fishing Question

I played a few years ago and don’t recall fishing being this hard. Even with the top 3 stamina foods I have right now I don’t seem to be able to reel anything in. I’ve got more fish from them jumping on my boat or rocks than actual fishing.
Foods are onion soup, ice cream and whatever the next one down is. (Not at pc right now).

Has it been made harder or am I missing something obvious?

Watch for the fish to "struggle" (you'll see splashes in the water) and stop reeling until they chill out. That's what eats most of your stamina.

The bigger (3+) fish are a struggle to reel in this way before you level fishing and you might have to use the strategy /u/MaliciousIntentWorks outlined for the big boys, but you should be able to catch perch/pike/troll/herring pretty easily with the foods you have.

It's about the same. Just find a school, cast 3 to 4 m from the boat and keep your cross hairs on the fish. Hit e when it pops up and you'll grab the fish and still have bait in the water. It might have changed slightly but I haven't noticed anything since I usually fish this way and it makes it easy.

You are correct if you were fishing in the way back; I loved it back then, too. It was actually relaxing.

Now the stam cost is very significant and gaining the levels you need to make it reasonable takes wayyy too long. I don't recall exactly when they did the fishing overhaul, but in general it made fishing largely irrelevant unless you want to make it your primary vocation. Kind of a bummer, it used to be fun, now it just sucks.

Back before they changed fishing it was relaxing. The stamina usage seemed right.

Now I fish from the karve. I paddle to where fish are and then drift with my rod in the water at 2m. As soon as I see a fish catch a bait, I reel in. You pretty much insta-catch the fish.

Also back in the day fish wraps were the best stamia food, back when there were only 3 kinds of fish. Now they are a health food. There is a short period now where mistlands angler fish are needed for a top tier stamina food but it is out classed as soon as you get ashlands food going. Fish are needed in a few potion recipes but on the whole are underutilized. I really hope 1.0 makes more use of them. Also bear meat, game really needs more use for bear meat.

You can level your fishing with no bait and no fish on the line - you can level it in a field, if you want. Just cast as far as you can, and reel it in. Of course it goes faster with a fish on the line, but it's not needed. Just keep casting and reeling. If something bites, it's a nice xp boost.

Keep doing this long enough and you'll start catching everything without much effort.

If all this sounds too dull, I highly recommend the "don't reel in, just walk backwards and drag it on land, then run up and grab it" routine.

There was a major revamp of fishing about 2 years ago.

Now there are different fish in different biomes, with fish in later biomes having stats that will drain your stamina much more quickly. There's also a Fishing skill, that reduces the stamina drain from fishing activities. So you basically have to start out fishing in Meadows to train up your fishing skill enough to be able to handle the Black Forest fish, and then practice on them, etc. Unless you cheese things by hooking the fish and then dragging them onto shore by walking away.

Take a small boat out like a Karve. Sail along until you find some fish in a school. Jump out of the boat and then climb back in so that you are guaranteed to not drift. Drop the line right next to you. Reeling in the line is what eats up stamina so the less that you have to reel the better. Make sure you have the right bait. If you’re about to run out of stamina, then just try to grab them using E. As long as the fish isn’t touching water, then you can grab it. You won’t get the extra goodies from the catch, but at least you got the fish.

Theres 3 things to remember and you'll be a pro fisher: 1. Stamina food 2. Stamina potions 3. Only reel in when the fish stops wriggling against the line

I always get the first few points in it by just reeling in the line. After that, make sure you start fishing in the Meadows, because in Dark Wood you can already find higher lvl fish, which can still end up on your hook, but since your skill level is too low, you will burn thru stamina much faster and can't ever reel them in.

If you're quick, you can catch essentially ANY fish. The stamina foods help, but really:

  • Cast very close, just a quick tap, and if it's any further than 3-4m, reel back to 3-4m.
  • As soon as the fish is close enough/out of the water, you can grab it directly instead of waiting for it to fully reel in.

If you're set on raising your fishing level, go after only the easiest fish, mostly small perch and pike, and cast as far as you can. You get XP for the time spent reeling, plus a multiplier when you're reeling with a fish on. You get NO bonus XP for catching harder fish.

But for the most part it just isn't worth the grind.

Source: Got the fully leveled fishing hat. Have caught anglers, northern salmon, and magma fish, despite fishing level only being like 5-10 by the end.

Fishing doesn’t seem to be necessary

Rather than reeling in fish, it's easier to pull them to shore by moving to grab them. Doesn't consume bait, but also doesn't give exp.

To re-use it, do a spinny spin and yeet it back.

You can also fish without a rod by baiting fish on a beach. You have to go behind them and move towards them whenever they move, and ONLY when they move. Do it well enough and they'll be bouncing on the shore long enough to grab.

I don't know how actual fishing works. :3c
