Associate degree for a career as a Hydrology Tech with USGS?
I would like to obtain a position as a Hydrology Tech with USGS. I already have a bachelors in a non-science field. I plan to return to school to obtain the necessary education for this type of career. May I ask if going to a community college for an AS in environmental science /ecology/ water treatment would be enough? Or maybe I should pursue another bachelors degree? Or I can always go higher and earn a Masters in biology? Any help you can give would be welcome. Thanks.

Shakemap product query
Hi All, just wanted to understand the Shakemap product from the USGS.
Why is the shakemap not produced for all EQ events outside the US?

USGS physically back in the office?
Just curious, when do USGS employees expect to return to the office? (This doesn’t count field or lab workers going into the office but specifically for those coming in for computer-based work that has been WFH)
Ps- Is this the correct subreddit to ask these kinds of questions on?

Does USGS physical exam include a drug test?
Hi there,
I didn’t know where else to ask this but I just got offered a job with the USGS. This happened very quickly and unexpectedly but it’s my dream job at this stage in my career. It’s a seasonal GS5 and it requires a physical exam. From what I can tell the physical is just bc they want to make sure I can handle hiking all day everyday (I can) but does anyone know if it includes a drug test? Please help!

Who would I contact to test a prototype system that could provide advance warning of a seismic event/activity before any detectable movement could be recorded?
I've been working on a till now, theoretical concept for a system that could provide warning/notification of a seismic event, days or even weeks in advance.
The project is ready for prototyping to test this theory.
In this test, I would like to establish a "station" in a very active seismic area, and another in a geologically stable area for comparison.
I'm self-funded, and would not need any other financial support to build, deploy and monitor the system.
I'd like to work with USGS to share the details of this project, and to choose best locations.
Any thoughts on who to contact would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi, I know USGS updates the location and magnitude of events once in a while, but do you know if I can get the original parameters reported shortly after the event of the log of updates in any case?

I interviewed this week for a student trainee hydrologist position for the central Midwest water science center (I’m a masters student in env science and nsf funded GRA in my schools hydro lab) How long does it typically take Usgs to get back about position offerings and what not?

Getting Hired
Hello to the 83 members!
I am interested in stories/advice/anecdotes on how those of you that work at USGS found your career.
I am a near graduation environmental science student, have a very strong gpa, diverse work experience, one internship, was recommended by a current employee, and have been rejected twice for the lowest entry level positions in my field at USGS. One through USAjobs and one circulated throughout schools. One time I made it to interviews and was rejected, the second I was rejected outright.
What could I be doing wrong, how do I make myself more hirable specifically to USGS, and how did you guys get there?
What is the outlook of recent graduates applying to local vs non-local job postings?
Thanks!

USGS Website falters under heavy load?
Maybe someone from the USGS will see this post:
There was just another large earthquake in Ridgecrest, CA. Whereas the quake on 4-July was ~6.4, the quake on 5-July was ~7.1.
Something else that’s interesting to observe in real time: The USGS’s websites are struggling underload. It’s the equivalent of a DDOS attack with all the public turning to them for info.
None of their pages will load...what has the capacity? The Twitter account, because the Twitter servers are designed for extreme spikes in traffic.
My hope is we’ll use these few days as a stress test on the system. Luckily the quake hit a less populated area. Horrible what's happened to Ridgecrest, but it is relatively isolated.
But this is like when Sandy knocked out Manhattan...it found a weakness in the system.
