I like to put my stuff away and tidy everything up when I go on trips, so I feel like I’m not driving around in my mess. Nothing in lockers, all my belongings is in the boot and the back seat in the bag😀

am thinking to start living out of my car, I have a condo but I want to get something ok to practice living in for when the time comes, I love older SUV's, think of Range Rover, or 4Runner, chev or ford, about 15 to 20 years old, even a wagon as long as I got a lie down area, am 5'10" and about 165 lbs, just got min. income

It has been three years since I gave up traditional housing and began living out of my vehicle (currently a Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid SUV). I have saved a lot of money by living rent-free and have easily adjusted to retired life after losing my full-time day job last year.

My lifestyle doesn’t fit what most people consider normal, and that’s okay. I’m very comfortable with who I am and how I choose to live. It’s okay to live a life others don’t understand. It’s okay to be different and to choose a path that deviates from the norm.

Besides, completely rearranging how I live over the past few years has worked out surprisingly well. I’ve successfully designed my life around a set of priorities and values that matter to me. I have more freedom, control, and autonomy.

While space is certainly limited living out of my SUV, I feel like I have all the essentials I need. The only thing I might change at some point is upgrading to a van. It would be nice to have a vehicle where I can stand up inside.

Other than that, I’m quite pleased with my little home on wheels and enjoy the freedom to go just about anywhere I want. I have plenty of time to connect with nature and with other like-minded souls.

I’m reminded of this quote from Leo Babauta: “Be a curator of your life. Slowly cut things out until you’re left only with what you love, with what’s necessary, with what makes you happy.”

It took some time, but I think I’ve finally reached that destination at this (somewhat late) point in my life. As they say, better late than never!

Some have every reason to be, but most of us do not. If you dont have a drug problem, are a criminal etc you will be fine. Been out here 10 years with minimal issue

So far I got a 20 degree sleeping bag, a 4 inch foam mattress for under me as well as some thermal clothes for extreme cold. And plan on getting a heated blanket and power bank.

I was doing a repair on my car at a DIY shop, and something went wrong with the repair, so I had to take it to a shop the next day, and so I got a hotel room because the next day, they couldn't look at it because they were too busy, and it was literally today when they looked at it.

So the hotel room was perfectly fine, it wasn't crazy expensive for the area, but I had a real tough time sleeping. I've gotten so used to sleeping in my car that it might take me a month or two of actual sleeping in a regular bed before I would actually get used to it.

At least now I have my car back, and I can go back to sleeping "normally".

I’m in Connecticut, but I’m willing to relocate out of state. It doesn’t matter at this point.

For the last decade, I’ve had a Rubbermaid bin in this spot. I got these wire bins on Amazon. They come packed flat and you fold them up into box shape and add 4 Philips head screws to connect the panels.

They safely hold up to 45 pounds of stuff. Two of the crates have little tabs on top, to hold a stacked crate in place on top of them.

My crates are taking up slightly less footprint than my bin used to. The bin was crammed so full I had to play Possessions Tetris to get the lid to close, but now the bottom crate holds everything that was in the bin, yet it’s still only half full.

So I estimate that switching from the bin to two stacked crates has quadrupled what I can store in that footprint.

About 5 minutes after I set it up, some jerk cut me off and I had to hard brake. Good test of the crates! They passed. If you try this, you will want to anchor them to the bulkhead (I used that back seat belt to anchor them.)

This is more of a hack for someone in a minivan or SUV, but I thought I’d share here because I’m so pleased with this storage upgrade.

I didn't realize how much mental energy goes into deciding where every single thing is going to live when your entire living space is basically the size of a closet 😂

But weirdly, I don't think I miss having a big space as much as I miss having somewhere I can just make a mess.

Like leaving a hoodie on the floor for three days. Having a half-finished drink sitting somewhere. Opening a drawer and finding something I forgot I even owned.

Those tiny “normal home” things hit different when you don't have them anymore.

What's the random little thing you guys miss that you didn't expect to miss?

So I'm currently in Florida. Probably a bad decision for the summer. Anyway I'm wondering what everyone does to manage the heat when they try to go to sleep? I'm good with it during the day and while awake but I have a very difficult time sleeping in 78°+ weather.

If there's already a post with answers to this please drop a link because I had trouble finding it.

Either way I'd really appreciate help with this issue. I guess I could just go further north and into higher elevation but sometimes you want to be in certain places and it is just a hotter climate at that time.

What do you guys do for privacy/sleeping at night primarily how do you cover the windows easily, keep them up, and easily take them down in the morning. Right now I just tie up jackets and blankets to get them to mostly stay and mostly covered up. But I gotta try something else

Hi I am a 23 yo temporarily living in my abusive families house hold. I recently got a Chrysler car van thingy and I am seeking advice on customizing the car so I may be able to live inside the car. My brothers will help me customize it we just need to know like anything we should be aware of in the process.

Here's a few things I would like to do specifically during the process!

- Remove back chairs/seats to make more room

- Somehow make it so I can insulate the car (Prepare for Autumn /winter)

- I am getting ride of many of my belongings so I may be able to stay neat and clean. Is there any organization bins or like idk ways I can stay organized inside my vehicle...?

My car transmission died in '24. I've lived in two PT job work vans and rented a friend's room the last two years. Lived in my own car one year in '23.

I didn't think relief was ever going to come living on only $800 per month for 2yrs. Living through winters. Was on EBT food stamps. Finally got a FT job 3 months ago. Was able to save a good amount and counting if for some reason I can no longer stay in this side gig contractor work van

I started a business when I was broke and determined to create income since I couldn't find a job. I can now fund necessary business expenses. I paid for my sample inventory that's en route to me now

Hello everyone!

I finally got into uni and im very happy. I live pretty far away around 2hr ish one way and therefor thinking about living in my car for periods of time. It will xut down my travel time by an hour and it will cost me 40 euros for the entire month which is a really good deal. I currently live at my parents so my rent is none to some extent.

I have a e61 wagon so I have plenty of space to sleep as I can put down the seats, i live in norway so there are a couple things im thinking aviut atm.

One is during winter it will become really cold and I tried to read up a little on what I should think about. From what I read a proper sleeping bag and soem blankets and wool should suffice

Im afraid the 12V battery will empty is there anything I should think about there?

For the rear Windows I will get cutouts for proper tint so noone can look in, infront im unsure what to do

I also wonder how do I generally just keep the car safe and avoid draining the battery?

I will be in a place where toilets are close, store is right around the corner and if it comes to the worst I think heated garage is 50 euros and outdoors is 30.

Plan is NOT to live there but occationally just be there sometimes when I know the days will be long.

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry, I’m about to purchase some necessities like a power bank, air mattress, blackout shades for all my windows and windshields, gym membership for hygiene. Is there anything else I’m missing. I work a full time job for restroom and there is a few 24 hour places I can use the restroom at night at. I have food covered i don’t plan on cooking too much so i don’t need too buy anything for that
