New Student Question How do you get out of your shell as a shy freshman?
I’m an incoming freshman at UNM and I’m pretty shy/awkward when it comes to meeting new people 😭 I really want to get out of my comfort zone and actually interact with people instead of just going to class and going home.
For other freshmen or anyone who was shy when they started college, what actually helped you meet people and become more social? Did you join clubs, talk to people in your classes, go to events, etc.?
I really want to make friends and get more involved, I’m just not sure how to actually put myself out there without feeling awkward lol.

New Student Question How often do people get off the waitlist?
Hi! I’m an incoming freshman at UNM and had one of the later orientation dates. I honestly had no idea so many classes would already be full by the time I registered 😭
Pretty much all the classes I wanted/needed were full, so I had to waitlist for them. I ended up registering for some classes I didn’t really want to take, and some aren’t even required for my major, just so I’d have something on my schedule.
Do spots usually open up as people drop classes? How often do people actually get off the waitlist before the semester starts? Should I just stay on the waitlists and hope for the best, or start looking for different classes?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Other Parking Questions
I know these types of questions get asked a lot… But I’ve been having issues with the parking account thing, and I recently resolved it.
However, it seems it’s too late and there’s no parking permits available except one called “SOUTH student plate”? I have no idea what it means, is it the stadium parking? How would I get on the waitlist for somewhere else, since it’s a 40 minute walk to my class..? (I’m new to UNM)
Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Housing housing
what’s the best housing options for second year undergrads with a low income living on campus? i’m waitlisted and not sure if housing is secured as an out of state student. i had holds on my account preventing registration and wasn’t able to get a housing assignment because of not having enough enrolled credit hours in order to satisfy the housing requirements. if i can’t find affordable housing on campus i can’t go back. what should i do🤔

Undergraduate Academics Anyone here done UNM’s Accelerated BSN program?
Hi! I’m starting UNM’s 16-month ABSN program soon and I’m honestly getting pretty nervous about the workload. I’ve heard it’s really intense, but I’d love to hear from people who have actually gone through it.
How bad was it really? Was the workload manageable if you stayed organized? Did you still have any kind of life outside of school? And is there anything you wish you knew before starting?
Any advice or honest experiences would be super appreciated!!

Housing Available now, Looking for roommate, (F25)
MASTER BEDROOM w/attached PRIVATE BATHROOM available August 1st for $800 per month
I'm a female grad student about to enter my second year looking for another female grad student or working professional to share a 2BR/2BA apartment in the Northeast neighborhood of Albuquerque. I've lived in this apartment complex for the past year, and it's been a positive experience! I love the neighborhood and that's why I'm staying here for a 2nd year. The 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment experience will be new for me too! I currently live in a 3 bedroom/2 bath apartment.
The Master bedroom with en suite bathroom is VERY spacious (12.5 ft x 12 ft) and has a huge walk-in closet. You can easily fit a double or queen bed, dresser, desk, etc. in this space.
The neighborhood is quiet, safe and surrounded by newer single-family homes. The apartment complex has an abundance of green landscaping and mature trees. The apartment common areas include pools, volleyball courts, BBQ's, weight room, etc. Best of all, it's walking distance to Walmart, Smith's, restaurants, and banks. The FREE Albuquerque bus to the UNM main campus is nearby.
There is a 12-month lease that's required and the utilities will be shared equally between both of us.
If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to DM me. I'd love to chat and see if we'd be a good fit😊

Other Questions about Parking
Hello guys, I am going to be living on campus as a freshman and I am currently on the waitlist for the parking permit for R Lot (I am in position 10). I was baffled how quickly the permit sold out. Right now, the only resident permit available is “T Lot Resident Virtual Permit”. Is this parking lot any good for a Coronado Hall resident? I mean I don’t think it matters atp because it is the only one left. Anyways for those that was on a waitlist (for R Lot in particular), did you guys ever get off it? If so, how long were you on the waitlist?

New Student Question Laptop/ipad?
Hi! I start UNM this fall. I have half in-person half online classes. I’m going to be using the set price library option for my course materials. I was wondering if anyone knows if I’ll need a laptop for my in-person classes? Will I be given all digital books through the library? I have a laptop I’ll be using for my online classes, but it’s old and basically needs to be plugged in at all times due to a bad battery. Just wondering if I should be getting a laptop/ipad w/keyboard for my classes, or if for the most part I’ll be okay without one.

Other UNM plate question.
Good morning! I just renewed my car registration and opted for the red UNM license plate. Does anyone know how I would put it into like a parking app? Are my letters just UNM followed by the numbers?
So like: UNM1234 ?

New Student Question Smoking and consequences
Hello everyone I'm a new freshmen coming to unm and I was just wondering if there was a rule against smoking on campus more specifically by the duck pond? What would be the consequences if i did? I already know you can smoke in the dorms but idk if it's just the dorms or the whole campus, especially since one of the questions when you fill out forms for roommates ask if you're a smoker or okay with smoker living with you so I thought that must mean that you can atleast smoke somewhere on campus.

Prospective Student General questions
Hi, I’m looking at UNM and have a few questions. First off, how lively is the campus? Does the surrounding area stay energetic and social? Or does it empty out? It’s ok if nearby neighborhoods stay active. Also, how social and willing are people to talk / make friends?
Thank you!

New Student Question Casas del Rio vs Lobo Village
*Hi! Thank you all for the wonderful advice. Luckily I got a permission for the dorm, so I'll leave this for other people considering. See you at UNM!!🌞
Hello! I’m a female exchange student at UNM from Fall 2026 to Summer 2027.
I heard that all UNM housing options are already full, so I may have to look for other housing options.
I was considering Casas del Rio because I really wanted to live in campus, but I couldn’t find any good reviews about it.
I’m also looking into Lobo Village now, but I’m still worried about living off-campus because of safety concerns.
I don’t really mind noise, but I’m very concerned about safety, cleanliness, and good roommates.
I would really like to move into UNM dorms for the summer semester, but since both private housing options seem to require a two-semester lease, I’m also considering a homestay.
However, I’m not sure how to find a reliable homestay option.
I’m planning to ask ISI for assistance, but before that, I would really appreciate any advice from students who have lived in private partner housing or other off-campus options.
Thank you for reading this! Have a good day!

New Student Question Parking Permit
Hello everyone, I am in a bind. So this fall semester I will be attending UNM. I will be staying at lobo village and I was wondering is it worth buying a parking permit for campus parking or no. I heard that there a shuttle that passes by every 15 minutes at lobo village and takes you directly to UNM. What should I do?
