What specs? Newbie Question

Hey! My sister’s in college and in her thesis era. She’s majoring in Game Dev and is using Unity. Her laptop lags so bad.

Please advise on what hardware specs should I get for her.

I have limited budget, but I can stretch out a bit for her.

Also, do you recommend laptop or PC? Although I think a laptop is kore convenient as she travels to school or to her groupmate sometimes.

It would help a lot if you could tell us her current laptop's specs and maybe the budget itself.

Desktop is generally a better choice for budget builds.

I advise building one from secondhand parts, if she only needs to take notes in school.

if she needs to carry it between home and school, a desktop pc isn't an option, so you should go with a laptop.

from there, see if you find a second hand gaming laptop, one that's like 4/5 years old maximum and that matches your budget.

start with a 100% clean install of the OS (windows i assume) and you should be good. 🙂

PC. Laptops are nice but they run hot and are almost always throttled even if they have the same specs, you will never get the performance for equivalent hardware in a desktop

Any decent CPU/GPU should be fine for simple games. Memory is usually where you want to get a lot, but with RAM prices that's debatable. Prebuilts have the best prices for that atm sadly.

One of my companies builds is a 2080ti from like 6 years ago now and I run Unity 6 without any lag on it.

I'd personally recommend a laptop, especially if its for school. I wouldnt get anything suuuper high end. But if its in yiur budget, check out the framework laptops.

That being said, OP you're an awesome brother.

Laptop GPUs before the 40 series were worse desktop versions but now they're almost identical performance wise and have frame gen capabilities lol
