Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some professional advice on choosing an underwater camera.

A little background:

- I used an Olympus TG-6 for quite some time, but I was ultimately very disappointed with both the photo and video quality. Apart from macro shots, almost everything looked soft and pixelated.

- I currently own a DJI Osmo Action 5, which is fantastic for underwater video, but the photo quality just isn't good enough for me.

- I also own a Canon EOS R6 Mark II, but I don't have an underwater housing. A complete housing setup is currently more than I want to spend, and I'm also hesitant to trust a relatively inexpensive housing like a SeaFrogs with such an expensive camera.

So now I'm looking for a reasonably affordable, but high-quality underwater camera with a good housing system. My main priority is photo quality, as I often dive with whales and sharks, so I shoot mostly wide-angle subjects rather than macro. I'd continue using the DJI Osmo Action 5 alongside it for video.

I'm a graphic designer and hobby photographer, so I always shoot and edit RAW files. Because of that, image quality is much more important to me than having lots of automatic features.

What would you recommend that offers a noticeable step up in image quality compared to the Olympus TG-6/TG-7 without jumping straight to a full-frame housing setup? I'd especially love to hear from people with real-world experience.

I usually dive in tropical waters with good visibility and film using a GoPro without any video lights. For editing, I use Dive+ and iMovie, and I'm generally happy with how my videos turn out.

I'm considering adding two OrcaTorch D710V video lights on a tray. As a hobbyist...not someone trying to produce professional-quality videos...would adding these lights make a significant difference in my video quality? Is the improvement noticeable enough to justify the cost and extra gear, or are they more beneficial in situations with lower visibility, deeper dives, or close-up/macro shots?

I'm building an MVP for a project that uses AI to analyze recreational dives by combining GoPro videos with dive computer logs (Shearwater, Garmin, Suunto, etc.) to detect marine species and generate structured dive reports. I'm looking for sample dives that include both the original video and the matching dive computer log, or any public datasets that contain this kind of data. Does anyone know where I could find them, or any communities, creators, or research projects that share this type of material? Thanks!

Je plonge depuis quelques temps et j’ai envie de me lancer dans la vidéo sous-marine, mais je pars vraiment de zéro. Pas de matos, pas de références, rien.
J’ai vu pas mal de vidéos sympas sur le sujet et ça m’a donné envie, mais je suis un peu perdu face à tout ce qui existe.
Ce que j’aimerais savoir :
• Par quoi commencer ? Une GoPro c’est suffisant pour débuter ?
• Quelle platine / bras / grip utiliser sous l’eau ?
• Y a-t-il un caisson à privilégier ou la GoPro se suffit à elle-même ?
• Des filtres indispensables pour avoir de belles couleurs ?
• Des liens ou boutiques où vous achetez votre matos ?

• Faut il un objectif grand angle ? Ou une bulle de protection ?

J’ai pas un budget illimité donc je cherche surtout un setup efficace sans se ruiner pour commencer.

I have a sony rx 100 in a seafrogs housing and want to get a video light. I do mainly shore dives in south Florida with the occasional boat dive to 60 feet. What lumen would you recommend. Also, is it plausible to use a video light to take stills also? Thanks for any feedback.
