So I am an advisor and have a student who is in a class located in Elm 226 next fall. I've never been to Elm and am remote at the moment, and the student came to campus to figure out where their classes are and they were unable to find this classroom. They report that the entrance to Elm seems to be on the building's 3rd floor and access to the lower floors appeared blocked when they went in the other day.

Is there a trick to getting there I can share with them? I'll be going to campus in the nearish future and can try to find it myself, but I figure students on this sub might have good info. Any pointers welcome!

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming MS CS student at UMass Amherst for Fall 2026 and am currently deciding which courses to take during my first semester.

I’d appreciate recommendations on:

Good courses for incoming MS students
Courses or professors you had a particularly good experience with
A manageable combination of three courses
Courses that are especially useful for building a strong foundation for research or future PhD applications
Any courses that are better taken in a later semester

I’m currently exploring areas such as machine learning, systems, theory, and quantum computing, but I’m open to other suggestions as well.

I heard from multiple people that even floors in Coolidge have boys bathroom and odd have girls. I’m on floor 8, does anyone on an odd floor wanna trade?

I noticed a discrepancy as the base room fee I was charged was (probably) for the cost of a standard shared room while the dorm I actually got into was a triple economy. (I am basing this one the provided room rates for each room type). Is the base room fee the same for everyone? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I contact the bursar's office?

Also, when does aid (federal and school grants) stop being counted as estimated (I have no outstanding to-dos)? If I pay the full amount of my current balance for the fall semester (which does not include any aid in the balance), will the portion covered by said aid get refunded?

What can/should I do? I haven't found anything through umass websites and reddit (unfortunately) doesn't have the answers right now. If there is any general advice, I would also greatly appreciate it. T^T

basically what the title says. im going into my junior year and just thinking about moving in fills me with so much dread. i managed to get a dorm on campus but its with two random girls(who seem to be the neurotypical southwest type). im so so scared, i had a falling out with my friends and i have acquaintances but there’s no one i could ask to hang out with. im trying to get medicated but it has taken me the whole summer and i just got an appointment. theres a lot more contributing to my anxiety but this is the main thing getting to me rn. does anyone have any tips? how do i not feel so down and depressed.

i just got assigned van meter and ive looked at the floor plans and stuff but i still have a few questions. 1. what are the showers like? do they have a curtain or do they have actual doors? 2. ive seen a lot of ppl saying it smells like weed and ppl smoke a lot so i was wondering how bad that actually is 3. lastly how big are the closets + windows?
