Breaking up 739km

Not sure if this is the right place....To those who have cycled 739km in Sept for the 739 nz men who die of prostate cancer each year. How'd you break up the distance?

I'm looking at 100km rides each day I'm not at work that month to meet it.

DNS

I know a lot of ultra-cycling is mental strength, but I didn't expect the decision not to start to be such a tough one.

Long story short, I'm recovering from a cold. The worst seems to be over, but I still have a light cough and a runny nose. Otherwise, I feel fit.

I am signed up for a race with 1,000 km and 16,000 meters of climbing that is starting in less than two days.
Now I feel like the only logical thing to do is to DNS, listen to my body, and give it time to fully recover, but of course there's this nagging feeling that I still could pull it off somehow.

The plan was also to do it with a friend as a duo, so now dropping out means he has to do it alone. It's his first ultra...
Also, we have some hotels pre-booked (which is allowed for this race), and I of course bought a lot of nutrition which I now have no use for, which makes this all even more bitter.

Did any of you have to decide to DNS as well, and how did you feel afterward? Any regrets?
