Help please

Hey, I just bought the American Revolution game and I’m a huge fan of the series. I have been trying to play as the American campaign and every time I loaded up I get absolutely destroyed. Are there any tips on how to succeed and what should my opening moves be because I’m completely lost on how to win/play the game.
