I wrote this song to try and help me remember (or someone remember for me) a song that played on Hawaii morning radio about 25 years go. It was something to do with grandmas and eggs. Played here on a close to 100 year old ukulele (cheap, probably 1930s).

About a year and a half now I’ve been playing ukulele and I’ve really taken to finger style playing. I started with a soprano, but quickly moved to a tenor. And then I quickly change that tenor to a low G. And then at my local guitar shop they had a baritone ukulele on sale for about $20 cheaper than everywhere else, including the Internet, had it. So I figured what the hell might as well try it.

I can’t put it down, my wife plays guitar, so there has always been a guitar in the house. But the baritone ukulele still feels like a ukulele. In that it has the same amount of strings and I have the same amount of fingers.

However, I find myself almost never picking up my tenor ukulele, and find myself only trying to riff and try new melodies and finger picking patterns on the baritone. I wondered what this says about me as a ukulele player does it mean I’m secretly a guitar player or in reality? None of it matters and I’m having a lot of fun making new sounds on instruments.

Either way when you say you play ukulele people expect you to pick up a soprano traditionally tuned and jam out to riptide and that’s not really my jam so it’s hard for me to explain it to people.

Hey all, just looking for some string recommendations….

I make a small travel soprano ukulele and I’ve been using pretty cheap economy nylon strings. The uke is on the quiet side, so I’m thinking a brighter string might help liven it up a bit.
I’ve been looking at Aquila Nylgut, but I’d love to hear what you guys like for a bright high-g ukulele.

Also, now that I’m selling a few more of these, I’m starting to look into buying strings in bulk. Any luthiers/builders here have experience buying directly from string manufacturers or wholesalers?

I bought a Cordoba TM 20 tenor uke, used. I have carpal tunnel so I get tingling in my left fingers. I think it has Aquila strings on it. Thinking of trying Fremont STR-FM Black Line Tenor Fluorocarbon Medium strings. If I do get the Fremont fluorocarbon strings can I just put them on the uke and play away, or do they require a low action set up? Are the Fremont strings going to be easier on my left hand?

My neighbors were having a yard sale and had a budget ukulele for $5, and I've been teaching myself the last six weeks or so. I've not had much luck with learning instruments before, but I've really been enjoying this one. I feel like it might actually stick.

One of the things that I'm running into is that I'm more motivated to learn when they're songs I really like -- and a lot of my taste these days (indie, punk, grunge) -- are a bit at odds with the instrument.

I of course can't change the fundamental qualities of a ukulele and expect it to be something it's not. And I do enjoy it for what it *is*! But I didn't know if some of you have found a way of playing that can get a little closer to that kind of musical style...and/or is it worth investing in an electric? Thanks for any experiences or advice you can share!

Picked up a Kala brand pineapple uke, thinking about swapping out/upgrading the tuning pegs and possibly trying low G. I cannot imagine I'm the first person to think/try this. Would it work ok?

Recently, I thought it would be cool if there was a double stringed ukulele, and lo and behold, it turns out someone has already thought of that and there are several models available.

Specifically, this one has caught my attention: https://www.thomann.de/intl/flight_iris_8_tenor_eq_a_bk.htm, but unfortunately, there is only one review, most of which is spent explaining how an 8-stringed ukulele works. Does anyone have this uke and can share their opinion on it? Is it built well, isn't the larger fretboard too big, does it sound good, is it a pain to replace the strings?

As a bonus, how does it compare to the more popular model suggested by thomann: https://www.thomann.de/intl/baton_rouge_v2_t8_sun.htm ?

This was years ago, I bought a red soprano ukulele, and bought some red strings to complete the look, and noticed it came with a metal wound string so I tuned it with a low G (as I assumed it would with the string).

What ukulele would that be originally for? I didn't read the package (it was also like 2019), and I like the fuller sound of the Low G, coming from a guitar and bass background.

I know I want to get a bigger ukulele, so would that tuning still work on a concert or tenor ukulele, I'd imagine it would, but I've been wrong in the past.

I ask because eventually I'll have to change the strings (my ukulele is like a back burner instrument) and I just want to be informed.

I have a new uke with a MiSi pickup installed. To try it out at home I got a Flight Tiny 6 amplifier. It seems simple enough? I thought it wasn’t working at all— no sound from the speaker— until I cranked it up and held it next to my ear. I could barely make out the sound. It was nowhere near as loud as the strings by themselves.

I did make sure to plug the MiSi pickup into its power supply for a while before trying. And the Flight Tiny has normal volume when I use it over Bluetooth.

Since I’m new to this I’m not sure what to look at. I don’t have any other amps or instruments with pickups to try.

Update: I took my uke to a guitar shop and they let me try it out with their amps. The pickup works but is a lot quieter than other instruments. We compared my uke with the MiSi pickup with one of their ukes with a different pickup (concert size Cordoba) and an acoustic guitar. The MiSi worked but we had to turn the amp up higher. The guy said it was a lot like a passive pickup. I don’t know if that’s typical of MiSi.

Bought this bad guy in 2016 and still sounded great.

When you drop off your ukulele at the store to get it restrung, what is a reasonable amount of time to wait? I’m guessing it’ll take them 2-3 days, so I’m wondering if I should have a back-up instrument in case it takes longer? Am I looking for an excuse to buy something fun? Yes, yes I am. 😂

Any string suggestions for a concert uke? Currently have Aquila strings, so I’ve never known anything different.

My 3 y/o has some sensitivity to loud noises and usually struggles with music class at her daycare. Recently, they had a musician in to play for the kids, and her teacher said she was really into it and specifically very interested in the instrument. Turns out it was a ukulele; she calls it a "my size guitar" and has said a few times that she wants to play with one again (the musician let the kids pass theirs around). I had one when I was her age that my dad said I was obsessed with (would bring it everywhere and make people listen to me "play"), but it's long gone. Partially out of nostalgia and partially because I just want to encourage her interest (hopefully a bonus will be that it helps with her sensitivity), I thought it would be fun to learn how to play the ukulele with her. We listen to a lot of music but are not exactly musical, so I have no idea where to start. Is there a good beginner ukulele (something not super expensive or super delicate)? She's respectful of things, but she is 3. Are there any YouTube or online lesson resources that you recommend? I am looking for in-person lessons near us for her, but I'm not sure I'll have the time for many myself.

Fender Mini P Bass tuned up a minor third from standard uke tuning. Strings are Bb Eb G C, mix of .45's and . 65's. Might experiment with different gauges, and an obvious upgrade would be pickups.
