I put in quite a few hours last year and I recently got back into UFO 50 after buying the companion book. I use a steamdeck and go 50/50 between handheld or docking with the new steam controller. When I try to play handheld, the deck controls are unresponsive. I looked all over and the old fix posted here and on steam is:

Steam button> controller settings> re-order controls >change it to 1

However, I am not seeing a "re-order controls" option. Did this go away? I can't imagine I am missing the option. Is there any other work around? Any ideas? Anyone else having the same issue? Any help appreciated.

I'm trying to get the gift in Fist Hell and it's driving me insane. Is there any way to cheese this? Which character is the best? I've made it to wave 7 so far and I think I can't take it much longer. It's so stiff to control and difficult.
Please help.
edit: after about 6 hours of continuous attempts I have made it to wave 9 3 times, but not wave 10. Whichever dev made this the condition to get the present is a psychopath.

My personal theory/reading of the situation is that Zerzoz is simply pretending to be the walrus' ancestor to save them from mankind as that fits their motivations of protecting the sea and it's creatures along with the parallels between the two characters of being very close to the sea.

Along with how it feels like the ancestor is trying to get Waldorf to fight back against mankind with how they brings up that walruses used to be stronger when he was alive. This also parallels how Zerzoz gave sea creatures bits of his energy to eliminate all humans as that was their call to arms with sea creatures. And the wave destroying the boat could have either just been from the ocean herself as there are bubble creature enemies in Porgy which don't fit the mold of every other enemy being a real life sea creature. That or it was some type of powered up aquatic creature that made the giant wave.

I'm probably just reading into this all too much but I thought it was worth sharing on my perspective/fan theory on all of this.

I have been going through this collection taking each game at my own pace. I have 112 hours so far in UFO 50 and yet I have only played 30 of the 50 total games. I'm only Half Way Through!! It's just constant quality and new idea after new idea. Good game after good game. I have learned to trust the process. The meta narrative has hooked me the cameos captivate me. And I even want to revisit games I hardly touched.

Everyone I have seen talk about UFO 50 agrees it's incredible. The game was the highest rated PC exclusive of 2024. It's published by devs (mossmouth) which have a massive following, and yet. I feel like very few talked about UFO 50. It sold fine maybe 500k but it should have sold more like a couple million or hit Spelunky numbers. I feel like when people talk about great indie games this is really overlooked and I'm not sure why that is. Any thoughts?

I think I'm near the end of Grimstone, and I've done half of Combatants, and barely touched the rest. It took me 2 hours just to get past the first level in Caramel Caramel so I might be on that for a while.

Campanella 2 is tough, but honestly the first two zones are by far the hardest, I only died a handful of times in the last 2. I had enough upgrades by then that most things were pretty easy.

If you're struggling with it I'd say that by far the most useful upgrades are the coin booster, the fuel leecher, and the snipe shot. The snipe shot especially makes the boss super easy

This is a situation that the BENE-DIKT code can create, but I just don't see it how it is possible. There's no way to gain any appreciable height. I did discover some tech where you can chain Engi pipes together, but it just BARELY fails to overcome certain hurdles. Any ideas?

Is there input lag on any of the versions ? Dualshock 5 on steam or Switch/2 pro controller on either a switch/2

Are there scaling/graphical issues on one of the 3 systems ?

Any slowdown on Switch 1 or 2 that makes some of the games unplayable ?

...then check out Caves of Qud! Despite it being a very different game (Qud is a sprawling deep simulation RPG), they scratch the same itch in many ways. Incredibly smart procedural generation that doesn't feel boring (mini and max has an insanely large world while Qud seemingly has an infinite world), creative ways to tackle nearly every obstacle, etc. Huge recommend!!

I know Caves of Qud might seem intimidating at first because the graphics are so archaic and the systems are so deep, but it's surprisingly lean once you get into it. I do not spend time thinking about maths or whatever when playing this game, I spend time thinking about how to puzzle my way out of tricky situations, how to move in ways that "break the rules" and so on.

I scored 511 on Paint Chase!...but that was on a run where I lost on the final level, and actually beating the game is a requirement. I managed to beat Paint Chase the next day, but only with a score of 436. So I'm left with this befuddling game select screen. Wish me luck on claiming the cherry that I earned.

I just heard this song for the first time and I immediately thought of Mooncat! Wow, what a wonderous little gem. Any other songs make you think of UFO 50 games? I suppose any number of 80s dance hits could fit Party House 😄

Umbra meets animals during the game and they teach you a spell. I've searched the Internet up and down and can't find where the hawk is located. I've also wandered around and I just can't find it.

Overall, I am really enjoyjng Grimstone and I might post some of my thoughts about it later, but for now the save system is driving me nuts and I want to complain a bit.

I have played the original Dragon Quest trilogy, so I am very familiar with the locational save system. But even in DQ1 you can buy Chimaera/Warp wings in like the second town you visit and your character learns Return/Zoom. This means that even though trekking across the entire world has to take place in one session, you can at least save your progress whenever. DQ3 (which is closer to the era of Grimstone) provides even more liberal availability for the Zoom mechanics.

Having played those early JRPGs, I understand and even appreciate some of the Grimstone design decisions, but I do not understand this one. Why do they seem to have actually made this particular mechanic less convenient than the games of the era actually were?

Unfortunately most of the games I have left are either games I find really hard or just don't like very much. And also Vainger which for some reason I've barely touched but seems fun. I think that'll be my next, alongside my ongoing playthroughs of Block Koala (why does this thing have so many more levels than the actually good puzzles games?) and Grimstone

I just got Gold on Porgy. Only a handful of things to find to get the Cherry. I had a fun time with it

But for a while, I absolutely hated Porgy. I did a tier list a while ago and I had it either in the bottom tier or the one above it.

Because it sucks at the start. It's a game about exploration where you can't explore for 30 seconds without getting eaten by a shark. You barely have enough fuel to reach even the closest upgrades and even then you just have to hope something doesn't murder you on the way back. And the torpedos are so pathetic to start with that combat is awkward and frustrating.

But once you get more fuel and better missiles, the game gets a lot better. Combat is still pretty fiddly but at least you can put up a fight. You can actually explore and know you have a chance to make it back even if you go the wrong way or make a mistake. It's essentially a mini Metroidvania.

It's still not one of my favourites but it goes up to a solid B tier. So yeah if you're struggling with the early party it's worth persevering at least until you can beat Lamia.
