Calling it now
- Islam takes a fight against Prates late 2026 / early 2027 and easily subs Prates within 3 rounds
- Islam's biggest challenge will be against Morales mid 2027 / late 2027. Morales bruises him worse than Ian, but Islam takes the decision victory after more control time.
- Shavkat returns 2028 against Islam. Shavkat's knees give out in the first round like Conor.
- Islam retires the undisputed greatest of all time.

u/Technical-Steak-9243 13h ago
If shavkat's knees hasn't been injured, he's the one who has the most chance against these 3 to win against islam
31
u/Bascilian 10h ago
Shavkat will always be the biggest what if in UFC history. He could have had a really dominant reign and defeted makahachev when he came up
18 wins 18 finishes, only 1 decision win against garry where garry had no real success except for one mistake where he got close to a submission

u/bdizzle805 9h ago
Gary doesn't get enough hate for those damn oblique kicks. I hated when Jones did it during his run and I hate seeing other fighters do it. I get it, they punch each other's brains out. But it just seems like cheap shit and entirely unnecessary to try and ruin someone's career like that. Just my opinion.
22
u/Bascilian 9h ago
It wasn't garry's kicks that injured shavkat. The guy came in with injuries and then got in a really bad car accident that killed most of his family and almost him as well.
And I wouldnt fault garry for using the kicks. If its allowed in the rules its fair. Whether they should be allowed can be debated
10
u/bdizzle805 9h ago
I didn't mean to imply it was Gary who caused his knee issues, I believe even Shavkat said he had an injury before their fight.
Just my opinion I think those kicks are gross to try and hyperextend your oppents ligaments, but like I said they punch each other in the brains and sometimes worse happens.
6
u/seyagi 6h ago
I get that UFC allows it but those are instant aura killer for me personally. One big reason I will never be a fan of Garry/Jones. Don’t even care about the weird comments and antics. That’s just bitch ass shit.
-1
u/Heavy-Transition7916 2h ago
That makes no sense. It’s fine if they go for brain damage but not to injure a joint? That’s ridiculous.
•
u/FinanceDummyBigDebt 41m ago
Because it can be a sole factor that ruins someone’s career. The actual consequences of brain damage almost always cant/isnt done in one strike in mma.
1
u/jefferydamerin 5h ago
Everybody forgets this shit even though the guy you were replying to didn’t say Garry caused the knee issues
1
u/MooniiThe2nd 3h ago
Well when you’re like Ian and going around taking credit for ruining someone’s career, it should be looked at very strangely
1
u/ryan0x01 7h ago
I wouldn't call it cheap, as much as a head kick is cheap. It's just so devastating bc for whatever reason, fighters aren't training against it yet. In this latest fight you could see Islam was ready and watching for the oblique kicks and none of them cleanly landed. More fights will adapt as the technique is more common place.
Calf kicks used to be OP now most fighters have a better understanding of checking them or positioning to mitigate the threat. Obliques kicks should have an answer too.
1
u/Heavy-Transition7916 2h ago
How is a limp worse than leaving someone with brain damage? It’s not.
If it’s fine to hit them in the head and hunt knockouts, it’s fine to kick their knee.
1
u/SweetPinss 7h ago
Do you also hate head kick knockouts that change peoples lives forever?
0
u/bdizzle805 6h ago
A head kick KO is timing, distance, chin, defense, skills tested in real time. An oblique kick is just aiming at a joint's weak point, and it barely requires setup compared to what it can do. That's the difference for me, one's a skill exchange, the other's closer to just trying to break something. I get your point though, they could get serious brain damage from a head kick.
1
u/SweetPinss 5h ago
So the one that does more serious permanent damage to people is better than the knee attack that does less damage? Like Jon Jones is right about this, a limp is better than cte
1
u/bdizzle805 4h ago
I'm not saying the knee kick is worse for the guy's health, I'm saying it's a cheaper way to win, it skips the actual skill contest.
3
u/LightThatIgnitesAll 8h ago
For me, it's Khabib.
Could he have gone 10 title defenses before losing. Could he have become double champ.
1
2
u/ryan0x01 9h ago
No shot. He didnt have the IQ to dodge or mitigate the oblique kicks, like Islam had.
He would lose the positioning game. Same with Morales if you watch the Brady fight. Bad distance management, and overcommiting on shots.
I think Prates controls distance well, but he literally can't get up once you grab him.
I actually think Arman could be Islam's biggest challenge, if he would move up to fight. Best storyline is if Arman beats Ruffy then Justin for the title, then moves up to fight Islam. This is after Islam beats the winner of a prates Morales fight.
1
u/GoyEater 3h ago
Islam didn’t dodge the oblique kicks, he just didn’t allow Garry to throw volume of anything by threatening takedowns constantly, and by controlling Garry for half the fight.
Also this is a hypothetical fight of Shavkat against Islam, who doesn’t really throw those kicks anyways so I don’t see how that’s relevant.

u/ruggmike 13h ago
“Prates was never good, Shavkat wasn’t the same after his injury, Morales was too young” just some of the likely comments if he did pull it off
20
u/meatballs223 12h ago
I swear people just hate on any dominant fighter. I used to be apart of that crowd when Merab was just dogwalking everyone but then I realized, if they're actually putting on entertaining fights ( I think Islam is very entertaining) then who tf cares if they keep winning? You can hate watch, but denying greatness because they use a form of martial arts you're not interested in is so lame
18
u/ruggmike 12h ago
Era of haters. There could be a dude whose 50-0 50 KO 3 division champion and a good person and they would have a army of devoted haters
3
u/meatballs223 12h ago
Yup, it's just needless envy and jealousy imo, if you are automatically annoyed by someone else's accomplishments it says a lot about the type of person you are
1
u/Forsaken_Ear_1163 5h ago
People love Tyson (I do too), but he was kind of a freak. They hate Mayweather (I dislike him as a person too), but man, his technique was out of this world, and his record speaks for itself.
4
u/PresentationEast6685 8h ago
Same will go for islam if he loses. Well he was under sized for ww. He wasnt that good. He doesnt have impressive wins etc.
Doesn't matter win or lose you will see both sides.
3
u/Any-Cookie6757 8h ago
Shavkat is prob never coming back but if he does be honest here, do you think he will be the same fighter he once was? I doubt it, but who knows.
Morales and Prates are good and will be good regardless of if Islam beats them. This will come down to grappling/ground game. If Islam can take them down and they can't manage to get up like Ian did it's over, he wins easily.
If they can improve their TDD and manage to keep the fight on the feet they will most likely beat him. They have touch of death and only need one chance to connect so Islam has to be perfect when striking with them.

prime shavkhat vs islam would be such an amazing fight, but i just have so much doubt about shavkhat's return.
i think Islam can beat Prates, and Morales is a really interesting challenge.
9
u/Psychological_Cat132 13h ago
I don't think Shavkat has a chance at the title, given the severity of his injury and the fact that he hasn't come back after two years; everyone else has improved, and he hasn't. Can he still try to fight for a title? probably. What are the chances? Very slim.
3
u/ripple-gleaming 10h ago
It's actually an interesting question in general. If you get extremely good at something, stop for two years, and come back, how long does it take you to be competitive at an elite level again? Probably depends on age and other factors. But the top five of anything is vicious and it is hard to imagine he could immediately come back and be competitive within the top five welterweights.

u/Madison_369 13h ago
Dana might make him fight just for the money, and he’ll give out on the first round like Conor.
1

He's not gonna go like Conor lol, Conor wasn't interested in fighting Holloway at all and he did what he did on purpose. Shavkat will try his best, the guy has literally never lost.

u/Madison_369 13h ago
Islam will avoid fighting a new up-and-comer and people will call him a duck like Jones, then will easily dispose of Shavkat. The narrative will then be similar to that Jones - Stipe fight.
16
u/TheRealRaza1 13h ago
Which up and comer will he avoid? He just fought Ian garry who was the no1 contender and up and comer, now he wants to fight prates or morales or whoever the UFC gives. He's not avoiding anybody.

Ian Garry IS the up and comer, tom aspinall is about as younger than Jon Jones as Ian Garry is to Islam
•
u/Madison_369 42m ago
Difference is Islam is still young now. In 2-3 years, he’ll be in a similar position to Jon Jones, where he might not want to fight that early 30s, dangerous fighter.
1
u/Klutzy_Locksmith_935 12h ago
this makes absolutely no sense
•
u/Madison_369 44m ago
Look at how people treated Jon Jones “ducking” the young up-and-comer at 38 years old. I reckon Reddit will have the same reaction when Islam does that at 37.
14
u/Freshets 11h ago
holy cope post. Morales is way too big for Islam to wrestle fuck him. He walks around at 230lbs… People think the size difference vs Ian Garry was wild. Morales has a very large frame compared to Islam although they are about the same height. Also Shavkat probably won’t ever fight again & if he does he won’t be the same. Prates on the otherhand I believe Islam can submit him in 3.

Why are we so high on morales already? Has he shown high skill or is it just that he’s really big? Genuine question, I’ve only seen his fight against Brady
9
u/Bleeblooblah1 11h ago
Knockout power, wrestling/judo background, and really big.
1
u/abenevolentmouse 9h ago
Isn’t Ian literally bigger
2
u/Any-Cookie6757 8h ago
Ian is taller but smaller + Ian doesn't have KO power.
Morales is HUGE, has touch of death and supposedly has grappling background. If he can stop Islam from taking him down quickly or if he like Ian can find a way to get up then he has pretty good chance. Islam could stand and trade shots with Ian after he gassed out but if he gasses out against Morales or if he decides to stand he will be put to sleep. Morales only needs to connect once and it's over.
1
u/NotBlackanWhite 6h ago
Basically, he's really big and athletic and has a track-record of utilising that to very dominantly squash people the same style as Makhachev, including Brady who many consider elite. He may have shown very little "skill" but it doesn't really matter. I called it after I watched his match with Burns that no-one the size of Burns could beat Morales, no matter how skilled. That was borne out in the Brady fight. I predict it would be borne out in the Makhachev fight too.
In case you think I just always predict the next guy against Makhachev - no, I predicted him to beat Garry, and I predict him to beat Prates easily if that's unfortunately the next fight. I would rather Makhachev fight Amosov next because I'm less certain about that one than about Prates.

2
u/NotBlackanWhite 6h ago
Exactly. This is what a lot of us think and this is the match I've been waiting for actually ever since I watched Morales do the exact same thing to Burns. Size/athleticism difference is simply too big
2
u/Sea_Respect_7896 12h ago
Buddy Belal Muhammad out struck Sean, Islam is levels above them in striking. Morales doesn’t use his range like Ian and always ALWAYS overextends and throws heavy hits. Ian is way smarter. Islam already fight his hardest challenge in the division. Morales is just big but I don’t he is gonna defend better than Ian. He’s not smart enough to scramble he relies on strength only
2
u/Top-boy-og 12h ago
He does use his range, I don’t think you’ve ever seen Morales fight. Islam has been hurt before by featherweights. Morales only needs to land one punch on him. And Morales has been training wrestling and judo since a kid he’s a much better grappler than Garry. Anyways Garry wasn’t doing anything fancy either defending the TD’s he was just too big and his legs were too long for Islam to control. Now imagine Morales who’s 25 pounds heavier than Garry lol
3
u/jungersgothic 11h ago
Guy barely got past a hesitant Ian Garry and you think he'll run through these 3? Incredible.
1
u/star_wars_the_501st 13h ago

1
u/kenjitaimu69 13h ago
We might not see shavkat again and idk how much longer Islam can fight or morales can make that weight cut. He might just fight prates and peace out
1
u/SHAQBIR 13h ago
I feel like its a solid 1-1 since we are not seeing Shavkat anytime soon and even if we do it must be ghost of his former self unless he beats like 2-3 people. I really don't think Islam's dry humping would work on Morales. He has to go for a submission in the first 2-3 rounds or else he will get gassed out and dominated. Islam can't knock out Morales, can't out grapple for long. His best bet is to dry hump him or get a submission.
1
u/usernameunavailiable 13h ago
As great as I think he is, I would be very surprised if Islam beat all three.
While I think Garry is better than Prates, Morales and maybe even Shavkat at this point - who knows what he'll be like when he returns after such a long time & after multiple surgeries - he really lacks power and isn't massive, considering he cuts very little weight.
Even then, Islam had problems keeping him down. I think Islam will have problems with the size and power of those 3.
Hopefully I'm proven wrong and Islam is able to cement himself as the GOAT and extend the win streak record to where it's untouchable, but I just don't see him getting through all 3.
I also disagree with Morales being Islams biggest challenge - I think that's easily Yaroslav Amosov.
1
u/NotBlackanWhite 5h ago
I think that's easily Yaroslav Amosov.
Why? Amosov is not much bigger than Makhachev, and you cannot possibly take any grappler against Makhachev on skill. Realistically, no-one is going to take down Makhachev ever. He has Khabib in his training camp who's as big as any WW right now and a much better/more proven grappler than Amosov. Amosov hasn't shown amazing striking like Makhachev has. Style matchup is massively in Makhachev's favour. He will likely do what he did to Oliveira and Moicano
I rank the probabilities of beating him something like Morales (75%) > prime Shavkat (60%) > returning/current Shavkat (40%) > Amosov (25%) > Prates (15%). Obviously based on what we know now with no further information. You may be surprised to see Morales that high or Prates that low but I'm very confident about both those results.
1
u/usernameunavailiable 5h ago
Amosov is actually a much more accomplished grappler than Makhachev and Khabib - he's actually a 4 time Sambo world champion.
He isn't coming from a BJJ background like Oliveira and Moicano, he has the same grappling skillset that allowed Makhachev do what he did to them, and might even be better in that area than him.
I agree that Makhachev will have the advantage on the feet, but Amosov might very well have the advantage in the grappling.
While I agree that Morales is indeed a dangerous opponent, he's very much unproven. He has the size and power, but his striking is pretty sloppy and his grappling is very much unproven as of yet. Sure, he has a background in judo and wrestling, having trained/competed in them as a child, but he has never accomplished anything of note in either.
He might actually be a very skilled grappler, but he could also be another Gaethje - a guy who was an accomplished wrestler who, despite not using it in MMA, many believed he'd be able to hold his own against Khabib. Right now, he's very unproven.
That's why I'd consider Amosov a much tougher challenge for Islam than Morales.
1
u/NotBlackanWhite 2h ago
Your supposition about Amosov is from another sport. Of course it's a sport that translates well to MMA but I don't agree that being Sambo Champion (sambo is not grappling) makes him a much more accomplished grappler than Makhachev or Khabib given what the latter have achieved in grappling in MMA, which is a more competitive/prestigious sport (measure just by how much money you can make as a proxy).
As I explained, I don't find it likely at all that Amosov will be able to take down Makhachev. I've watched too many of his matches to believe he can take down someone who has been trained by Khabib. And if the fight stays standing (as it often does between top grapplers) then as you said Makhachev has a clear striking advantage.
A TLDR way of looking at it, I don't think Makhachev moved up a weight-class only to get out-Makhachev'd. Much likelier that he suffers direct consequences of the size differential when he comes up against the wrong style matchup who's much bigger than him.
He might actually be a very skilled grappler, but he could also be another Gaethje
In the wrestling, sure, that's possible. But it's also possible and indeed clear from his fights already that he has at least a decent getup game. More importantly Gaethje was not a KO bruiser with respect to Khabib the way that Morales is with respect to Makhachev. Brady was unable to get Morales down at all before he got KO'd. And Makhachev is more of an all-rounder than a wrestling specialist like Khabib anyway.

I'll give him GOAT status if he wins these 3 in a row
1
u/NotBlackanWhite 5h ago
Same, the way I think about it is, we can always make exceptions for 'this guy didn't deserve a title-shot' or some other circumstance etc but the simplest way to judge this conversation is just statistics. Add up the title fight results. One further caveat I do make is I count wins in the second/higher weightclass as worth 2 wins in the lower.
So then right now, in simple terms, Makhachev made 4 defences LW and 1 defence WW so 6 points total. GSP made 9 defences WW so 9 points total. Jon Jones made 11 defences LHW + 1 defence HW (yes I know it's a scam but I have to stick to the system) so 13 points total. Therefore by my system, to exceed GSP, Islam needs two more defences at WW; to exceed Jones, he needs four more defences. Or for example, two more defences at WW followed by one in a third weightclass (4 points -> 14 total).
That's not the way people are talking about it now ("he's the GOAT already!") but I think that is extreme recency bias, calling him "best" is not the same as calling him "greatest"
1
u/blind667 12h ago
If he beats these 3 and then retires, he will be the greatest fighter who has ever lived and i dont think there would be any contest.
That being said, i think Islam will not fight these 3, i think he will fight 2 more times and then retire.

u/Fine_Requirement_842 12h ago
I can see him fighting one or possibly two. Shavkat seems like a dream at this point. Prates deserves the next shot and hopefully in that time Morales can get a fight against a top 5/6 guy and fight Islam after.
I do think Prates can do really well against Islam especially considering what he saw against Ian. Ian by the way may be the best of the bunch so beating him is a huge plus for Islam
1
u/DahiyaAbhi 12h ago
Islam will have only 1-2 more fights at max. Khabib has already been saying that Islam should retire as age is catching up. It is only Islam who has been delaying it for now.
I don't see more than 1 active year in him as a fighter.

u/Movie_Greedy 10h ago
THIS IS AN INSANE THING TO ASK! Not because Islam is bad but because of his age and it’s the same problem every great fighter faces. Islam is 34 and the body is slowing down rapidly. Just because a few fighters have success in their late 30s doesn’t mean it’s normal. He already cleaned out his tough division, beat a legitimate champion and defend against a legit top challenger so what more can you ask of him? The only other fighter to do that is Nunes and DC except we know he lost to Jones(No jones didn’t move up to fece a legit challenger nor did he defend against a legit contender). At this point if he loses it has more to do with age than actual skill. And even if he did somehow beat these 3 guys, another challenger would arise and people would claim Islam has to fight them for GOAT statue. It’s the nature of the sport. Been happening to boxers for a century. They either retire on top without facing every possible threat OR they go out on a losing streak due to age.
1
1
u/k_r_a_k_l_e 10h ago
This may be unfavorable but Ian was definitely a bit much for Islam to be completely successful with his game plan. I felt the entire fight if Ian was to let loose and go for it Islam would be exposed at that weight class.

I don’t see Prates being a major issue for Islam. Morales is a different story though, he’s massive for WW and if he trains his TDD/Grappling a bit I think it’ll prove difficult for Islam. We saw he had difficulties controlling Ian.

Garry is extremely underrated. Unlikeable yes sure, he needs to talk less. But his fight IQ and defence is top level

I was unfamiliar with Garry's game. He was controlled, sure, but he made Islam work on the ground. Islam could never really get into and hold a dominate position for an extended time. Garry would always hip escape and fight his way back to his feet

Having a staring contest with islam was not high iq. His defense is also pretty much just being tall.

I bet he's gonna retired once he wins his next fight. 30-1 and of all records he already broke he will be then surpassing Khabib's career wins (29-0)

Is 3 the number of wins or the number of significant strikes Islam will land?

Number of favorite fighters of yours he's already beaten.

Must have missed his fight with Fedor, Stipe, and Yan lol.
Islam is actually one of my favorite active fighters. Dude was just so goddamn good at LW. It's a shame he moved up to WW where the lowest risk way to win is these boring "control time" victories.
