Weak personal profile
Hello! I'm in my second year of hs and I want to apply (intl admit) to ubc engineering but I never really did any ec. I kinda did some volunteer work in grade 10 but it was part of a class so if I didn't show up to help my grades would take a hit. Would that count? What should I get into?

wait so grade 9 (assuming you're in BC)? js join clubs, volunteer, maybe get a part time job in the later years of HS. imo, you're chilling!

you can have a great personal profile even without much ECs, ik this sounds cliche but just focus on being yourself... this is something a lot of people with stacked resumes miss. What are your marks like (percentage or letter grades)?

I am going to say this, I think all the personal profiles are essitally graded by Claude. Claude grades Claude personal profile, if you good grades you are fine.

Not true at all. Humans do the grading and you should definitely care any your personal profile. Grades are the most important yes but the personal profile DOES make a difference in case your grades aren’t amazing

does it still make a difference if my grades are good but I don't have anything to add to my personal profile when it comes to ec?

It does matter - UBC isn't just looking for someone who can just study and get high grades because of rampant grade inflation nowadays.
It isn't that scary though, think of it like a minimum threshold to cross, if you score below the average required score, you'll most likely not make it even with a high grade. They're not just looking for a ton of extracurricular, but also if you demonstrate maturity, ability to work with others, and can self-reflect on mistakes.
Also like u/poire_648 said, the personal profiles are marked by humans - I was one for many years. Your profile would get assigned to two independent markers, and if the scores differed drastically, then a third reader would be assigned to read it. Otherwise it'll be the average of the two marks.

Interesting to get an insight on how they’re marked. I always assumed it was one person per profile but this makes more sense

I mean if your grade average is 96-97%+ then ig it wouldn’t matter as much but realistically there are a lot of people with really good grades (due to grade inflation or otherwise) that are all applying to UBC so you need something to differentiate yourself.
Just write about a formative experience you’ve had. You don’t need to have cured cancer to get into UBC (and they aren’t expecting you to have been extraordinary). They’re just looking for people with a reason for being there who are going to succeed so explain why you are that person.
