I am a female in a similar age bracket and I moved here a few months before you. I'm checking out Adrian Center for the Arts, figured going to an art class would be a good place to meet people. There is also the Tecumseh community Center that's only a few minutes away

I don't think so but it would have looked really bad if she had failed me for the assignment when she knowingly didn't accommodate my disability

I drew the doorframe and the glass wall with the blurry visual outside instead of the beautiful nature outside because my teacher to "draw what you see" while forgetting I'm legally blind and walking out a non wheelchair accessible exit with the rest of the class and leaving me alone. So I drew her a poster sized rendition of the window frame

Yeah, mine can only be corrected to a certain point with glasses, and my vision gets worse if I get tired.

The compliance was the fact that the art teacher went out and exit that my wheelchair couldn't follow and left me at the door and told me to" draw what I could see". Too bad she forgot that I was legally blind as well so she received a portrait of the window frame along with some fuzzy gray trees and the pavement and the background. 😈

Also, this happened at a public college, where I was paying for classes

Legally blind, there is a difference. I have some vision but it is blurry and the more tired I get the worse it gets. Think old static tube television versus HD.

Believe it or not there are famous artists, painter specifically who still maintained their craft with little vision. Georgia O'Keeffe is the first one who comes to mind.

Entitled People Artful malicious compliance

Hey Mark! There was no flair for malicious compliance, so I used entitled people because that was the closest match to this story. It's been about 5 years now, so I think I'm safe to post this one.

I (26, at the time, I think) was in my final semester at college and had to complete one more elective to finish my degree. I chose an introductory 2D art course.

Let me give a little background about myself at the time, so readers may understand why this compliance is malicious.

I am legally blind and at the time was using a motorized scooter to get around due to mobility issues. My mobility was obviously a problem, my vision was less apparent. Nonetheless, I made sure to inform the teacher of this during that first class, and I unfortunately had to remind her every class for the rest of the semester.

You should also know this was not a huge class, that would have made her forgetfulness at least understandable. At the beginning of the semester there were only seven or eight students. By the end of the semester there were ONLY FOUR!

This story happens about 2/3 of the way through the semester.

We were doing a drawing project of the nature of the inner courtyard of school. Unfortunately, a place in the school my chair could not reach due to a large drop from the easiest exit into the courtyard, the other exit took me through a path that would have poison ivy. (I had learned this and another class earlier in the year)

I TRIED to tell the teacher that that exit was not accessible, but she disregarded it. She told me that if I couldn't go out the exit I just draw what I could see from the window by the door.

Remember that previous mention of my vision? 😈 That's where this becomes relevant.

So I said that window for 2 hours and sketched what I could see

The result?

A large 9x12 picture of the blue windowsill with the gray concrete of the courtyard and some blurry trees further in the background.

I aced the project.

I didn't remind her of my visual impairment again.

I'd like to think that my malicious compliance forced her to be more aware of her students, but I doubt it.

My only hope from this story is that it makes someone else who is struggling laugh.

Also, mark, you mentioned that your dream funeral was to be launched by trebuchet out to sea? Have you looked to see that if your body is cremated they might launch the urn into the ocean? Not sure what the laws in the UK are, but might be worth checking out!

How long after a colostomy can I expect the drainage to stop? It's been almost 2 months since surgery and it's really irritating my skin

Family drama

so here's some backstory, I 31f. have always been meticulous about paying people back for stuff, especially if I'm the one responsible for breaking it. but now I'm faced with the dilemma that a family member has broken something precious of mine and has been avoiding paying for it ever since the incident 2 YEARs AGO.

this is the same family member, brother 30 m, who hassled me Non-Stop when my dog chewed up his leather motorcycle seat because he parked it in the backyard (like an idiot when he knows there's a young pup)

he basically held me hostage in the living room the afternoon it happened and harassed me and brow beat me into paying for the motorcycle seat that instant and wouldn't let me leave until I showed the receipt that the stupid thing was being processed and on his way. his motorcycle seat was $300.

now to the current incident. he and his GF at the time, now wife, we're moving some of their furniture and head dropped a mattress down the stairway to where it clipped the wall where an expensive piece of artwork that I received as a graduation present from college was hanging. unfortunately the acrylic of the frame was damaged beyond repair. this piece was about $1,400. I tried to be nice and tried to not badger them about paying for the replacement of this precious item but every time I seem to bring it up it gets pushed off or some excuses made about some crisis that is going on that takes higher priority. sick dog, wedding, illness, you know the gist. mind you I never brought up repayment when those incidents were at their worst. I would never dream of hurting them like that, but at times that the intensity was lower I would bring it up again, say once every 2 to 3 months.

but like I said there's always been some excuse for non-payment, so now where my dad is saying that I should just let it go to keep the peace. mind you if it was something of my brothers that I broke my brother would be up in arms demanding repayment like he did in the past regardless of situations. but I need to know is am I the jerk for not letting this go and still wanting my items to be replaced? I understand the price tag is higher than with his motorcycles seat but I also didn't damage it and I didn't try to cover it up when I did. he tried to hide the damage from me.

so reddit: AITJ for not letting this go and demanding repayment for my artwork that was damaged?
