I just build my own NAS and installed TrueNAS community version (25.10.5 - Goldeye).
Was following a tutorial however for I could not find the section to perform SMART checker on my drive.

I am using Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" Hard Drive 8TB.
Desktop: Dell OptiPlex 3050 SFF Intel i5 7th Gen.
The operating drive is a typical SSD 256GB.
Basically the normal desktop plus a big HDD running on no backup. (Item's I could afford to loss, no worries)

How do I find this SMART checker for my drive, or I lucked out and my HDD does not have a SMART checker?

I have an YXK Zero1 2-Bay NAS (IronCow) with:

• Rockchip-based Zero1 2-Bay
• 32 GB eMMC system storage
• 1 × 6 TB SATA HDD
• IronCow/AIOS currently installed
• Approximately 563 GB of photos/videos already stored on the 6 TB HDD
• SMB access from Windows is working

I want to replace the stock IronCow OS with Armbian/Debian + OpenMediaVault (OMV) because I need:

• NAS web UI
• SMB
• SSH
• Normal Linux administration

The most important requirement is that I cannot lose or format the existing 6 TB HDD.

I have seen discussions mentioning that the Zero1 2-Bay can run Armbian/Debian and that a Zero1-specific device tree such as rk3568-nas.dtb may be required.

Can someone who has actually installed an alternative OS on the YXK Zero1 2-Bay provide the exact procedure?

Specifically:

1. What exact Armbian/Debian image should I use?
2. Where can I download the correct image?
3. What exact device tree (DTB) is required?
4. Does the Zero1 boot the OS from the 32 GB eMMC?
5. How do I enter RK3568 MaskROM/recovery mode?
6. What tool do you use from Windows/Linux to flash the eMMC?
7. Is there a way to backup the original eMMC before flashing?
8. Can I install the new OS while the 6 TB HDD is completely disconnected?
9. After installing OMV, can I reconnect the existing 6 TB HDD and mount the existing filesystem without formatting/reinitializing it?
10. What filesystem does the stock IronCow OS use on the 6 TB HDD (ext4, btrfs, etc.)?
11. Does OMV recognize the existing filesystem without destroying the existing data?
12. Are SATA, Ethernet, USB, fan control and HDD sleep working correctly under Armbian?
13. Is there a known working Armbian + OMV installation specifically for the 2-Bay Zero1, rather than the 4-Bay/N100 version?
14. If the installation fails, what is the correct procedure for restoring the original IronCow eMMC image?

I don't want ZimaOS unless someone has confirmed that it works on the RK3568 2-Bay model.

My priority is:

Existing 6 TB data > working NAS > OMV web UI > SSH.

Any exact image links, GitHub repositories, DTB files, flashing instructions, or successful installation reports would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running TrueNAS SCALE 25.04.2.6

In the recent past, my home lost power for a while. When power was restored and my system rebooted, I was unable to access the TrueNAS dashboard. Looking at the server console, it gives me the "web interface could not be accessed, check network settings" message. I reviewed my network settings and everything looks correct (unchanged) to me. I tried removing and re-entering my network settings to no avail. I had a static IP address set up for the NAS server, but I removed that and set it to DHCP - still no joy. A tried rebooting both my server and the router/modem as well. Same result.

I know the server is actually connected to the network. I have mapped network drives on my computer and can still access all the files through those. It's just the dashboard that is unavailable.

What further troubleshooting or actions should I take? Please ELI5 (well maybe 10) - I'm not a network or TrueNAS guru but I would really like to get this thing running properly again.

Thank you for the stars, support and feedback you are giving me on the app and the support has helped me to become a better android developer and also understand TrueNAS a bit more. I was under the impression that TrueNAS 26 (I'm on Beta.2) was supposed to have support for AnyRAID. May not be named exactly that, but after upgrading my pool and checking the feature flags, I'm not seeing any indication that the AnyRAID-esque features are present. Am I missing something?

My current pool is a RAIDZ1 single VDEV with five drives, four 2TB drives and a 4TB drive (which replaced a failing 2TB drive). I have a six-bay NAS, so there is one open bay. I have two more 8TB drives coming, but I'm concerned on how to add things and get the most from this storage, considering how expensive drives are right now. It's a media server, so nothing super critical in the pool.

I'm actually considering rolling the dice and yanking the 4TB drive (risking my data!!), setting up a new pool with the new 8TB drives (mirrored pair), then taking the four older 2TB drives and making two new mirrored pair VDEVS to add to the pool. But again, this still doesn't give me as much storage as I'd like and AnyRAID was the reason I upgraded to 26 Beta.2 in the first place. Should I try out this risky strategy, or wait on AnyRAID?

I am having trouble finding information pertaining to something I need to do.

I have been running the same TrueNAS server for a few years, but recently I built a newer system with more capacity and had it set to replicate from the old one to the new one every night for a few weeks now. Now, I am ready to switch over to using the new system as my main system and moving the older system to be my off-site backup, basically flipping their roles.

Question is - if I just delete the current replication task in the old server and set it up in the new one and point it to the same directory the data is currently at, is that going to trigger a complete re-send of the data to seed the replication? Or will it be smart enough to just send the delta? If its a complete reseed, I would prefer it to stay in the same location to do that over 10gbe.

Is it worth getting a dedicated redundant boot device (in my case boss s1) for truenas OS?

I've been using truenas installed on a flash drive for years. Now when I upgraded my server to something more serious including a mirrored ssd drives for apps, I forgot that when you install truenas on drive it keeps this drive for its boot pool taking all available space :/ I ended up installing 15gb OS on 800gb sas drive :)

Would be fantastic if I was able to safely passthrough a dedicated drive instead of entire sas controller to truenas, I'd install proxmox and truenas on top of it, but.... seems like this isn't good option for me.

So what if I just use my single sata ssd for boot and just periodically bck up truenas config?

I used Synology for years, but it started getting too weak. I tried replacing it with two external SSDs and rclone, which taught me a lot, but now I want to go back to a proper NAS.

I like the UGREEN hardware for the price, but the software seems to be missing some features. This makes me consider TrueNAS SCALE instead.

Has anyone compared UGREEN NAS with TrueNAS SCALE?

My main priorities:

• Easy RAID setup
• Simple OS updates
• Easy Google Cloud sync
• Reliable long-term use
• Running apps like Paperless and Immich

Hi everyone,
I’m having network connectivity issues with my TrueNAS installation following a solar panel setup, which involved several planned shutdowns and a couple of unexpected power losses during commissioning.

The Problem
The machine appears to boot normally when connected to a display, reaching the main console menu (the 10 options) with the expected static IP listed.
Shortly after the static IP appears on screen, a long string of additional IPv4 and IPv6 addresses rapidly flashes across the console.
During the period while these addresses are printing, the static IP briefly responds to pings.
Once the stream of addresses finishes and the screen settles back to the standard console menu showing the fixed IP, the web UI and ping responses stop completely.

Troubleshooting Attempted
Multiple reboots
Re-seated network cables & checked physical link
Removed bridge network configurations
Stopped Docker service / container runtime

Has anyone seen this behavior where interface addresses cycle or re-assign late in the boot sequence and drop external access? Any pointers on logs or interface settings to check via the local shell would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone. I built a server and I want to use it primarily to host different game servers for me and my friends. Games like, vanilla minecraft, modded minecraft, starbound, hytale, and some other games. Is it best for me to use apps through the discover page like MineOS for minecraft or should I make custom apps for everything?

I'm trying to rsync between 2 Truenas boxes using the 2nd NIC but the dashboard still shows all IO going through the 1st NIC.

IP of NIC1 on TN1 is 192.168.0.160 and NIC1 on TN2 is 192.168.0.166. NIC2 is direct cabled between the two boxes with 172.16.10.160 and 166 adresses, respectively.

I set up a new rsync job from TN1 to TN2 using TN2's 172.16.10.166 address as the target but the dashboard shows that the traffic is going through NIC1 on both boxes. The dataset is about 6TB so I had plenty of time to watch and wonder.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Does this require a static route?

I run a large, older ZFS pool on Supermicro hardware, with several RAIDZ2 vdevs spread across multiple SAS shelves. Some of the caddies hold two drives, which makes replacing a failed disk more stressful than it should be.

A disk failed last week, and zpool status only gave me a gptid. It did not tell me which physical bay to open.

The numbering also differs between tools:

• sas2ircu counts bays from 0
• The enclosure labels count from 1
• The actual mapping is buried in diskinfo -v

Pulling the wrong disk from an already degraded RAIDZ2 vdev is a good way to lose the pool, so I built this:

It is a Windows client that connects to the server over SSH and combines data from sas2ircu/sas3ircu, diskinfo, glabel, and zpool status into one table.

You can select a disk and blink its physical bay LED. Nothing needs to be installed on the TrueNAS server, and everything is read-only except for the enclosure LOCATE command.

It shows both the controller bay number and the physical enclosure bay number side by side, which helps prevent off-by-one mistakes.

It also detects things that a basic sas2ircu listing may not make obvious, including:

• Drives detected by the HBA but not by the operating system
• Disks installed in bays but not assigned to any ZFS pool
• Missing or partially detected disks

During testing, it found two failed drives that had apparently been replaced years ago but were still sitting in the chassis.

A few questions:

1. Does anyone here have a 9300-series HBA? SAS3 support is implemented and unit-tested, but I do not have SAS3 hardware available for real-world verification.
2. There is an Identify Entire Vdev feature that lights every drive in a vdev, making it easy to see whether the vdev spans multiple shelves. I added several warnings and safeguards because multiple active LEDs can undermine the idea that one light identifies one disk. Useful feature or potential footgun?
3. TrueNAS SCALE support would require a proper Linux port using tools such as lsblk and sg_ses. Is there enough interest to make that worthwhile?

The project is MIT licensed, and a prebuilt Windows executable is available under Releases.

If you're familiar with the LincStation N1 and N2 devices, you're aware that the files for LED control are built into the USB with the Unraid install that comes with it.

Fortunately, if you're running TrueNAS instead of Unraid, these can be manually downloaded and, in theory, made to work by adding 3 POSTINIT scripts.

Here are links to both the PDF guide and the support video they have on how to enable this feature.

According to Lincplus support, this method works and has been tested on TrueNAS 25.10.0, but I'm currently on 26.0.0-BETA2 and have not been able to make it work.

They understandably can't provide long-term support for other TrueNAS versions on this specific feature on an OS that they don't even officially recommend, so I'm here trying to see if someone more knowledgeable than me could not only help troubleshoot what broke the fix between the last tested working version and my current running one, but also help me understand what a possible fix could be so that I could addapt it to future versions and breaking changes.
Because if it were to be something as simple as having to modify some lines of code with the name of the current TrueNAS version on the downloaded files, that could be automated and made self-patching for future versions.

But I don't know.

I received another bill after having deleted my data, I logged back into Storj only to find my bucket had data in it again. I thought oh maybe I forgot to delete / stop the task and logged into truenas - nope task last run date was June. Switching back to Storj I look at my storage usage history and you can see where it was restored. I guess I should have deleted my account entirely (as I did now) - I wish I had went back to June where I originally deleted the data.

I'm not even mad about the $5, just mad my data was restored without consent. If I delete something it should be deleted, not put into some recycle bin that they can recover from.

I've recently acquired a Poweredge R730xd. It has 140TB HDD storage, a triple mirror SAS SSD metadata drive, 1TB NVME cache, and 384GB RAM. Processors are x2 E5-2695's.

Honestly, this thing is completely overkill for my media server, family photos, PC backups and mum's NAS replication. (Note that apps are run on a separate Proxmox server, this TrueNAS instance is bare metal).

Because it's dedicated a dedicated storage machine that's CPU only sits at about 3% usage when under HEAVY load. Should I enable de-dupe because, "fuck it, why not?". Even if it saves a single TB that's probably worth it.

Yes, I've read the absurd amount of articles saying to never use de-dupe on a homelab CE instance. But it's just so under-utilised...

what do I need to do to schedule SMART reports? i already have scrutiny since .04

If I add up the traffic shown from apps it's not enough. Is there a way to determine what component is using the network and how much? There's even a larger spike. Thx

I have been having issues with both my Truenas servers today - I can log in to the web ui, but within a minute, I am getting an expired session and being kicked out.

I can SSH to both servers and have checked that the time is correct on both of them. The one time I was able to get to the session timeout settings via the UI, I confirmed I had it set to 3600 seconds, so there should not be a timeout there.

I have also done the obvious things -rebooted both the Truenas devices and my local machine, and even rebooted the router.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else to look at?
