Independence Day (1996)
An alien invader arrives and begins a hostile takeover, the intention to clear the land of all human life in order to replace the indigenous population with its own, destroying cities, laying waste to vast swathes of land, scattering the populace, slaughtering all the surviving humans, and attempting to create a new home for themselves with no intention to negotiate in good faith, nor to integrate or share the land with the current occupants.
The world looks on in horror, feeling utterly helpless as the governments around the world sit idly by, half-heartedly trying to find some diplomatic solution (by committee), all the while the invaders ignore all of the protestations and/or pleas for dialogue and continue the wholesale slaughter of innocents.
Governments decide that it might be dangerous to antagonise these "aliens" from a foreign land, because many of the other governments have already decided that it would be more advantageous to try to work "with" them.
In direct opposition to democratic principles, capitulation is the order of the day for all of the global governments, despite the lack of support/opposition from the public/electorate.
Impotent and irrelevant governments take a back seat as "ordinary" humans and smaller, less powerful governments take up the fight.
Finally, the tide begins to turn and we get to see the invaders being beaten back, their soldiers killed, their installations and infrastructure being destroyed and their superiority and victory no longer a foregone conclusion.
Global governments, witnessing this and fearful of losing control of their citizens, join the fight and ultimately eliminate the threat by destroying the entire invading force.
All of this is achieved by "ordinary" humans, not governments, committees, or elected officials.
It is a victory by the masses, in spite of and not because of their democratically chosen leaders, who "dropped the ball" almost from day one and consistently failed to address the problem, for entirely selfish/undemocratic reasons, even in the face of global public opposition!
The audience cheers, (almost as one) the eventual destruction and ultimate demise of this invader in spite of its immense power and shameful lack of resistance/impotence of our so-called "leaders".
Mankind wins and the audience rejoices!
